I'm normally not a fan of alternate uniforms, but these Detroit helmets are sharp.

Late in q3, Tyreek Hill has 3 carries for 19 yards and 3 catches for 6 yards.

I think that sums up matters pretty well.

Tyreek has beaten the defense deep twice, once on a 3rd and long somehow. One time he was severely underthrown and the other severely overthrown.

Even better than the Lions becoming a legit team, is how much fun they are.

They've probably shown this during the game, but no QB has ever had a qualifying game (14 attempts minimum) without an incompletion or interception. Best with one was a Drew Brees 29-for-30 in a blowout over Indy five years ago.

This is really a key point. The Bears could have four HoF WRs and it would not matter one iota if Caleb has no time to throw. Darnell Wright is the only guy worth salvaging from this O-line mess. The interior guys all need to go but did you see how bad Jones was at LT? He's got no anchor at all. It will certainly take more than one offseason to fix the line problem but let's take a WR with #9 because he has "value". Silly logic when the QB is running for his life.

In general though the offensive line play is terrible across a lot of the NFL right now. Whether that’s due to the decrease in allowed practice and playing the starting unit less and less in preseason or whatever.

If you take a tackle or guard at 9 overall, it still doesn’t fix the other 3 positions on the line and the chances are it’s taking him a long time to get up to speed. Building a line takes a ton of investment (in acquiring and retaining players), coaching and patience, and while the Odunze pick probably wasn’t the right one I’m not sure it’s the silver bullet either if they just go and take the highest rated OL in a weak class either.

The NFL is just in a really interesting place overall. So many injuries, so many offenses looking terrible even accounting for all the injuries. Maybe it’s something that corrects itself and by week 10 it’s a distant memory, but you wonder what levers the NFL has left to increase offense and decrease the volume of key players getting injured. Defenses just keep getting bigger, faster and it takes a hell of a lot less practice time to install a new defensive scheme than an offensive one.

Me: maybe superstar quarterbacks are starting to get paid too much. Heck, even average quarterbacks seem to be a bit overpaid.

I fell asleep early in the 4th quarter of the Lions game. Oh well. Defense was giving me flashbacks to last year, though.

I was suggesting a trade out of 9 for more picks or picks/player. With Odunze, Bowers, Latu, etc. still on the board that pick had lots of value, and I'm sure there would have been more than one team interested in moving up (or a team attempting to make a splash like the Texans did in 2023).

Has anyone's reputation fallen faster than Mike McDonald? Went from offensive super-genius and the cutting edge of football to "no one can run your weird-ass system except for Tua" overnight.

Seriously. Both he and the Dolphins' GM are taking a ton of heat for creating an offense and roster that is totally dependent on one very injury prone quarterback. Super specialization can be really effective until you can't do that one thing you're super specialized at then you have no alternatives, no Plan B.

I don't know about that. Are we saying that other coaches would be winning games and having a functional offense with Tyler Huntley and Skyler Thompson?

FWIW Huntley was 3-6 with the Ravens on a run-heavy team with a far better defense and his stats on Sunday were roughly in line with what he's done over his career.

I can see the heat on the GM for going all in on Tua and not having a better option behind him, and I'm sure McDaniels influences that also, but crappy backup QB's are just crappy and I'm not sure it means he's not a good offensive coach.

It was. In Ann Arbor, which wasn't particularly Lions-friendly, especially during the ten-year war, much amusement was had at the Lions' expense when they tried to adopt that song.

I'm not sure what people expect from McDonald. If there's a mistake, it might have been in not preserving the shaky status quo and holding on to Mike White as the backup, because he had to know by now that Skylar Thompson wasn't good enough. But, obviously, he had no confidence in White, since White is also available via the practice squad, albeit in-division and that can start wars. Huntley has been with the team two weeks now. That's not enough time to make a specific evaluation.

Nothing in Thompson's, Boyle's or Huntley's past suggests they can hold up as starters for any length of time.

Maybe the lesson is simply that you have to have one of the "good" backups on your roster if you're going to play a guy with an injury history. Knocking McDonald because he's got a system that generates tons of offense with good personnel, but fails with backups who are barely holding onto NFL jobs seems silly. The Dolphins made their bed with Tua. If he's done, there's no coach in the world that can do much to fix this.

I started to question McDaniel (including on this board) when Dolphins were on Hard Knocks. He just seemed a bit of a caricature on the show, but there’s no way of 100% knowing if he is always like that.

He clearly has an amazing and creative offensive mind, but is possibly in the wrong division: he needs a division with fewer cold weather opponents and more domes!

I wonder if any of the offensive woes are also partly due to Tua being a left handed thrower and the backups are all right handed.

I did wonder the same: would it be better to have a theoretically slightly inferior lefty backup so the angles and rhythms are the same, versus a slightly better right handed QB? Unfortunately we don’t have a slightly better right handed QB, so we’ll never know…

Like people have said though, the difference in play is so great that Tua’s value in this offence is very apparent now.

I suspect this is exactly the lesson, personally, especially when it comes to an injury that tends to keep recurring, like concussions.

Id be thrilled with this for the Raiders. Offense looked better this past week with Adams out. We dont have a QB gokd enough to take advantage of DA or make him happy so id rather the team spread it around and have receivers in there who are willing to block.

It depends on what those mid-round picks are worth. I just figured you'd be able to do better than a 2nd and slop. But maybe he's viewed as a 1-year rental since his last 2 years are non-guaranteed. But even then, the cost isn't that crazy for a team like the Jets to keep him around and have him be their #1 in 2025 if they feel he is still at the top of his game.
