The Thread Of Grievances that are not FOFC related
I have a little hostility to damp down, and this one didn't really fit into other threads, but I didn't want to create a thread just for one gripe post, so, here's the Thread of Grievances: Things that annoy you. (let's stay away from politics and the like, ok?)
Stream of Consciousness regarding my latest sports game purchase Me: Hmm: NBA 2K25 is on sale with bonuses. I should give it a try, it would give me something to play on Steam Deck when I have to put my feet up. (having to download 150GB game to steam deck, which doesn't download when asleep, even if it's on AC Power.) Me: Ok, that took forever, mostly because I would do it an hour or so at a time while I played other games on it. Ok, time to launch the gam.. NBA2K25: Downloading shaders. ETA: 45 minutes Me... goddamnit. Ok, I'll just read in bed until it's done (falls asleep) (some hours later) NBA 2K25: Done! Me: Greatm, finally time to play this.. NBA2K25: Downloading Full shaders! Me: WhafucK?? NBA2K25: You can play the game tho Me: Whew.. NBA2K25: If you like screensaver FPS, that is. Me: Oh fuck this. (more time passes) Me: Ok, time to.. god, I can't play this on Steam Deck, it's way too small for easy control. Who the fuck verified this? Fine. I'll play it on my fucking desktop.. NBA2K25: Downloading 150 GB game to desktop.. oh, and you'll have to wait another 90 minutes for the shaders to be built on PC too. Me: I'm starting to feel like this game should have paid ME $40, not vice versa. edit: Finally go through everything, go to start a new character and.. https://imgur.com/a/o2ew3S0 You gotta be FUCKING kidding me.

It is time for the airing of the grievances? I thought Festivus was a couple of months away.

Shaders with a bad CPU is brutal. I assume Steam deck doesn’t have a great one. That’s one advantage console def has over pc since they can ship the game on console with shaders since each console is the same components.
Also….may be time to upgrade that CPU on that desktop if it takes 90 minutes.

Why does Hollywood keep making movie musicals and then advertising them as if there is no singing? If you don't know anything about Wicked it must be terribly confusing seeing commercials for it with no singing but seeing advertising tie-ins full of singing.

That's the thing. I have a pretty good CPU and a top of the line GPU.
CPU i5-9600 (3.77 GHZ) GPU GeForce 4070

GPU and RAM have nothing to do with shaders being compiled and that CPU is 6 years old and was a middle of the line offering then. I’m sure you aren’t having issues with it as it’s totally fine especially at higher resolutions but that CPU is why it’s taking so long to compile. I recently upgraded from a 8700k to a 7600x3D and the time to compile has gone down considerably, but even with the 8700k I never saw more than 5 minutes tops. The longest was Hogwarts Legacy.

we plan on upgrading the computer next year when Windows 10 goes EOSL (we can't upgrade in place because my motherboard doesn't have the TPM chip, stupid restriction

I think you are going to need a new mobo when you do an upgrade. The mobo socket you have for the 9th gen Intel CPU only fits the 8th and 9th gen. 10th gen went to the 1200 socket. You should have the 1151. Any upgrade on that CPU while keeping the mobo would be pretty small and probably not worth the money. I think the best you could do is the 9900k which, just looking at prices quickly, are more expensive than AMDs latest line of chips which absolutely crush it in performance. Just something to think about.

yeah, my brother had much the same thoughts (that don't upgrade the CPU till we upgrade the mobo, and look at AMD instead of Intel)

Intel killed themselves with 13th and 14th gen CPUs that have such a high failure rate that no one should be using them. They just came out with a new gen that they claim doesn’t have that bug that killed all their CPUs the last two gens but at this point it’s hard to trust them.

If you care to read more here is a Reddit thread discussing it.

I'm glad I'm not building new until mid-year next year.

When you go to build don’t sleep on microcenter bundles. You can usually get a CPU/mobo/RAM combo for a good value.
