Twisters: 8/10

I don't go to the theater very often, but nostalgia got the better of me and made me want to see this in the theater like I did the Twister back in 1996. It was worth it. The first movie was a bit of a special effects marvel at the time, though you can watch it now and it screams early CGI. This movie made the tornados look just like what you see from real storm chasers. The knock would be just like in the first movie some of the physics of what is done in the movie is pretty questionable. But, just like in the first movie, the movie conveys the power and destruction of natural monsters.

Story was good, if many of the twists (and twisters) you can see coming. Just a fun popcorn movie that isn't too deep, not preachy at all, and gives you some real thrills.

Thriller 40 - 9/10

Talk about bringing back some incredible memories. A documentary on Showtime about the making of the Thiller album. It discusses everything that went into it, the creative efforts to make the songs themselves, the aftermath and then the absolute explosion when the Thriller mini-movie came out. You really get to se just how shy Michael was as well as his incredible drive. It's really an iconic telling of a music icon. Just watched it for the 2nd time. Goodbumps at times.

Twisters - 9.5/10

It has been way too long since I’ve seen a good, big budget film in a theater and really enjoyed it. I also appreciated them not making it into a love story (even though the setup was there). Effects were good. Lots of tension.

I saw they actually cut the big kiss scene at the end. I agree it was a good call.

Deadpool & Wolverine - 9/10

Fun and very justifiably R-rated super hero film. They did a great job of keeping cameos quiet and there were a lot of fun ones. You can tell that Reynolds loves the character and universe. All the fights you could ask for and tons of nostalgia. The mid-credits scene was a nice love letter to all the non-MCU properties and the end credits scene is hilarious. I’ll nick it a point because I’m sick of the multiverse stuff and I felt the first 20% or so was a little slow for me.

There wasn't much of a plot to this but it was still a blast to watch. Agree with everything you said.

Best movie in a long time for me, good plot or not, just was plain entertaining from start to end. Was nice to go to the movies and have fun, putting all real world crap to the side.

Twisters 9/10 - Perfect summer movie. Definitely a movie that is more fun at a theater than at home.

They need to remake this Redford/Pitt movie, with like Pitt and Glenn Powell.

It's a very good movie, but Tony Scott's directing makes it feel very of it's time. It just feels a bit too late 90s/early 00s.

This was the Drive-In we used to go to when I was a kid. Saw Star Wars there in 1977, and it blew my mind. It always had double features, and I remember so many times watching that first movie then crashing in the back seat full of blankets and pillows with my little sister through the second movie. Saw such classics as "Walking Tall" "Harper Valley PTA" "Ode To Billy Joe" "Love Story". It is not in an area that I would want to be in that late at night anymore. I wish there were more Drive In's like this around.

Not if you have a home theatre that hits harder than most movie theatres

Alien:Romulus. 7.5/10

Thought there were a bunch of interesting sequences and using a reconstituted Ian Holm was a cool idea. Ultimately maybe they needed a better lead or a more recognizable face in the cast

3 out of 4 of my company of nerds enjoyed it. I thought for better or worse it relied heavily on nostalgia. It did have some lazy writing.

I agree with the score and enjoyed it. It had a 90s feel to it where scenes and the plot weren't stretched out. Sometimes it worked and other times it was jarring how quickly a plot point was resolved and they moved on. Michael Keaton was amazing though.

The dude from Rebel Ridge should be the next James Bond. Movie is an easy 8.5/10, great entry to the “you fucked with the wrong guy” genre. Don Johnson especially superb

I went in expecting typical Netflix slop and was pleasantly surprised at how good this movie is. Guess the guy who made Blue Ruin made it. And you're right that the lead was phenomenal.

Quiet Place, Day One - 7.5/10

Solid addition to the franchise. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Lite on the action but appropriate, nice intensity.

But I’m getting tired of humans on the defensive. The next movie should ideally be more military action.

Whale - ?/10

I didn't rate the movie because I watched first 30 min or so and gave up on it.

Brendan Fraser was great but the story line was too real and too depressing. There's no body positivity here.

I would like to add Catherine O Hara to the list of amazing.

Body positivity stops just short of morbidly obese. This is a good thing.

Uglies - 2/10

Boy, did this suck. A movie with 25-30 year olds playing 16-year olds. The premise is a post apocalyptic Earth where genetics allows kids to undergo a procedure on their 16th birthdays that makes them into perfect beings, going from “Uglies” to “Pretties.” Of course the transformation makes attractive people into tanned, blonde, styled haired, amber color eyed, makeup wearing versions that look like they did before. There is a rebellion and convenient yet stupid technology and betrayals and a setup for a sequel that I feel pretty certain will not be made.

Potential for a cool concept and some selectively good scenery, but really wooden acting (Chase Stokes and Laverne Cox were particularly cringy) and some shitty CGI. 2/10 may be generous, but there are worse movies. Just not much worse.

Finally got around to seeing Pearl. Mia Got and the cinematography were both awesome. Would love to see a film set between Pearl and X and am very much looking forward to Maxine.

Good reviews on Gladiator II. Coming soon to you on Nov 22.

I enjoy Denzel and like that he is getting some nice roles as a mature actor.

Matt Brennan of the L.A. Times said the film has “absolute sicko shit,” further calling it “the ‘we are so back’ of bloody costume epics.”

“Gladiator II” occurs 16 years after the first film’s events. The story follows Lucius (Mescal) — the grandson of Rome’s former emperor Marcus Aurelius and son of Lucilla (Connie Nielsen) and Maximus (Russell Crowe). Lucius now lives with his wife and child in Numidia. However, when Roman soldiers led by General Marcus Acacius (Pedro Pascal) invade, he is forced into slavery. He must fight as a gladiator at the behest of the current young emperors, Caracalla and Geta (Joseph Quinn and Fred Hechinger).

Caddo Lake on Max was pretty good. Kept my attention throughout and had some tight storytelling. Only a few characters to keep track of. Will certainly watch it again, maybe even next year. Solid movie.

Signed up to Mubi for The Substance and it was as effed up as promised. I loved it. Also quite enjoyed Goodnight Mommy, which was equally effed up.

Alien Romulus - 7.5/10

The most like the original sequel. Somewhat slow but made up for it in the last 30-40 min or so, the big boss and the fight was fun!

Very different from Prometheus/Covenant but that's okay. I loved Prometheus (and the unanswered mysteries) but Covenant got a little too cute, deus ex machina for me. Romulus brings it back down to earth.

I wish they would make a series out of this (ala Paramount and the Star Trek franchise). And I don't mean fighting an Alien every episode, but think the Weyland world/universe is a pretty good setting for lots of interesting stories and the occasional Alien/space marines here and there.
