I hadn't really thought about it, but someone pointed out Trump is being so kind in bringing down stocks to a price that the average person can afford them. A few more months, and some are going to be a real bargain. He is probably going to do the same with housing once a bunch of people start getting evicted.

Market futures are firmly green right now at +.5%. It's from Lutnick's statement about possible progress on Canada/Mexico tariffs.

But I'm not going to believe it until it actually happens, and the SOTU could rile up the markets.

Next Fed meeting is Mar 18-19. I sure hope Jerome can reassure the markets & businesses with "Fed's rate decision/trend/direction".

The Fed should be able to handle tariffs & inflation (it's done it before) but can it also handle self-inflicted unemployment spikes and loss of consumer confidence, all at the same time? Probably not as well, if at all.

This whole puppetmaster routine definitely feels like artificial manipulation of the markets, at a minimum.

Futures still green. That's a good sign, I guess.

But then, more than a few times this first month, I've thought "oh well, easy come, easy go". Intraday swings have been very rapid.

FWIW. Interestingly, this thread started Mar 2020 when Joe came into office. The pessimism & fears (not the cause) from those early comments are similar to current day. Similar FUD, different reasons.

Even if it is he has immunity. He can manipulate the market all he wants.

Of course! And just like with everything else he does, the only people really in any danger (not that it's going to happen...) are the people around him. I mean, in theory, there could be some smoking gun texts or other things that make it obvious people were using inside information to trade stocks before some of these announcements.

Wait until the jobs numbers come out tomorrow. Flat, possibly even negative, is what I saw someone predicting.

I think this is the asshole.

I don't remember a Commerce Secretary in so many pics with President. I think he wanted the Treasury job and is now on a power trip.

Lutnick's claim to fame is running a ponzi crypto scheme and stealing 9/11 funds from victim families.

He also promised the victims families he would take care of them, then almost immediately took them off the payroll and cancelled their benefits. Guy has his own room reserved in hell.

I know Bobby Axelrod is based mostly on Steve Cohen but I'm convinced they were inspired in part by Lutnick's 9/11 rugpull in that storyline too.

Nasdaq officially in a correction, down over 10+% from recent high. The other 2 are still pretty far from it.

Top Nasdaq companies are Apple, Microsoft, Nvidia, Amazon, Meta, Broadcom, Alphabet, Tesla. I can see markets being worried about Apple, Nvidia, Broadcom with the trade/tariff wars; and Tesla because of the negative goodwill Musk has generated.

Buy hey, futures are solid green for now.

Powell says Fed is awaiting ‘greater clarity’ on Trump policies before making next move on rates
If Jerome is also confused then, of course, we/markets are confused too ...

“We do not need to be in a hurry, and are well positioned to wait for greater clarity,” the central bank chief said at a policy forum in New York.
I don't know if above is really true. The Fed may be behind the curve if they wait to get clarity that may not be forthcoming.

Time will eventually answer the money questions. Money however, is not a current fan of the existing uncertainty.

For a little comic relief from this past week, check out below. If you don't follow the sub, you may not understand it. But created by someone on r/wsb for r/wsb and pretty funny.

FWIW, r/wsb is definitely not PC. Pretty much anything is allowed just as long as it's somehow related to the markets.

Normally things are way too complicated to blame or credit the President, but in this case all of this is because of Trump. No laws have been passed, no external events have happened, nothing but Trump's unilateral decisions that have tanked the markets.

Not sure what's going on with this schizo market. Obviously, Trump but what made it uptick this afternoon? Best I can guess is Ukraine saying they'll do a ceasefire if Russia does.

Regardless, happy to see Nasdaq in the green right now, good comeback.

EDIT: okay, below must have been the reason

Nice, I like Ford already. Get Lutnick to earn his pay.

Quote:
Ontario Premier Doug Ford on Tuesday said he was temporarily suspending his province’s planned 25% surcharge on electricity exported to the United States after U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick agreed to renewed trade talks.

Ford said that he and Lutnick “had a productive conversation about the economic relationship between the United States and Canada” earlier Tuesday.

“We have both agreed, let cooler heads prevail,” Ford told reporters, hours after U.S. President Donald Trump escalated an already hot trade war by saying he would raise tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum imports to 50%.

He said Lutnick agreed to meet with Ford and the U.S. trade representative in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday to discuss a renewed United States-Mexico-Canada trade agreement.

CPI less than expected and the markets react positively! Looking forward to the updated price of eggs and stuff.

Quote:
Futures received a boost on Wednesday after prices for goods and services rose less than expected in February. The consumer price index, a broad measure of costs across the U.S. economy, accelerated 0.2% for the month, putting the annual inflation rate at 2.8%. This was lower than the respective Dow Jones estimates for 0.3% and 2.9%. Core CPI, which excludes volatile food and energy prices, rose 0.2% on the month and 3.1% for the past 12 months, both lower than expected.

But then again, waiting for Trump to say/threaten something to knock it back down

CPI should be going down when the economy is flagging. It does seem like we're heading for it. Airlines are showing a substantial reduction in forward bookings and have cut hiring forecasts for this year, along with adjusting first quarter expectations. Airlines tend to be leading indicators for this very reason.

I work for a big company in aviation and two directors got laid off this week. One of them was with the company for 30ish years and started off in lower management. Director from another location is transferring to replace one and the responsibilities of the other I assume will be pushed onto everyone else involved in the reshuffle.
