Is there a point where a team planning on having a QB competition anyway takes a shot on him and just cuts him if he loses the job? I’m just thinking someone like the Colts who plan on having Richardson and Jones play it out in the pre-season. You can’t tell me there isn’t a chance that Shedeur is the best of that bunch.

Any other teams plan on having an open competition this season?

Pittsburgh clearly has a need, but they seem confident that he's not the answer.

Yeah ESPN was all in on Sanders when the draft started-Kiper had him as his #1 prospect, and they all acted though there were doubts about where he would go. they were still talking about him going in the 1st.

Trump putting the NFL owners on blast for not drafting Sanders in the first round makes his continued slide all the more hilarious.

Which is funny, because if youve ever talked college football with a Trump supporter, they hate Sanders more than anyone.

Guy that inherited a fortune coming out and saying that Shedeur should be picked because of how good his dad was……checks out actually. Seems pretty on point for Trump.

I was going to ask about Clay Matthews (?) message from the President as they were getting ready to start the draft-what exactly did he say and no surprise that Trump tried to make himself the center of attention again on something.

On Sanders, I think it's obvious at this point that GMs are calculating that the average talent doesn't justify the circus, but at what point would they think he's been humbled enough that the circus wouldn't apply? 6th, 7th, UDFA?

We're a long way from Deion suggesting in the media that certain teams shouldn't bother drafting him.

As one who is always critical of NFL teams not playing to the QB's strengths and/or putting a young QB in situations and systems they are not suited for, I can't criticize teams for choosing not to do those things with Shedeur. I can't speak on what was said during the interview process. None of us think any of that matters if we are talking about a Mahomes type talent. I can't speak on the effect that Deion had on the whole process but does anyone actually believe that teams would not take a potential top ten NFL starting QB because his daddy was a pain in the ass? Of course now that he is obviously at best someone's backup, all of those things come into play. Once that happens, yeah the juice is probably not worth the squeeze.

I am now seeing comparisons to guys like Malik Willis and Will Levis. Yet again, I get why teams would take a shot at players described as "using his rare combination of elite rushing talent and a rocket-launching right arm" and as "one of the most physically gifted quarterbacks in the draft". I listened to a clip this morning of Field Yates trying to justify selecting Shedeur and the high points are things like four year starter, touch, accuracy when not under pressure, and uplifting the profile of his receivers besides Hunter? Huh? That is why he should be drafted?

Here is a thought experiment. Forget where either got picked if Shedeur ends up getting picked, who is/was the better prospect and who would you rather have as your starting QB or even in your QB room in 2025. Shedeur Sanders or Bryce Young?

If Sanders is Trey Lance level on the field, I can't imagine how much noise would be coming from Sanders' camp about his lack of field time. Even though it's obvious Lance hasn't played a lot because he's shown nearly zero ability in practice - otherwise he'd have been playing.

This is teams totally not wanting the headache.

He'd have to file a lawsuit. NCAA rules are that when you declare for the draft, you forgo your remaining eligibility. It'd go over like *another* lead balloon. He'd probably be better off signing with a UFL team tomorrow.

2025 NFL Offseason/Free Agency/Draft thread

If I’m a head coach do I want Deion flying in the wings, heir apparent to take over when we are losing because most teams needing a QB aren’t going to be great year one.

So the constant cage rattling about starting sanders and relieving me of my job so Deion can take over is not something I’d invite easily

This seems like the most likely answer. What GM is willingly going to be pressured by his dad to take over as HC? It's a bigger issue than what his kid can do on the field now.

Why would Abdul Carter want to wear #56 as a Giant? It would be different if he got drafted by the Dolphins or even the Eagles. Wearing #56 because he idolized LT makes sense if you are on 31 other teams. Not if you are a member of the Giants. Similarly, I don't know why Cam Ward needed permission from Warren Moon to wear #1. Warren Moon wore #1 for the Houston Oilers and never pulled on a jersey for the Titans. Yes, I think it is ridiculous for the Tenneesee Titans to combine their history with the history of the Houston Oilers and for the Oklahoma City Thunder to combine their history with the Seattle SuperSonics.

I was listening to coverage on the radio and they were speculation Sanders camp at this point is telling teams not to draft him because he would rather file a lawsuit and get way more NIL money than whatever the slot would be for a late round pick.

SHEDEUR’S AGENT: OK. Here’s the deal. We don’t want you to draft Shedeur because…

GM: OK. That’s fine. We won’t draft him.

AGENT: but don’t you want to know why you shouldn’t draft him?

GM: no. That’s fine. You guys win. We won’t draft him.

I think Sanders has now surpassed guys like Sam Howell and Malik Willis in terms of where he was projected versus where he will (may?) end up going. Not surprised he didn't go in the first three rounds, but pretty shocked he's not home by the early fifth.

Shadeur Sanders
Dillon Gabriel
Joe Flacco
Kenny Pickett

Man into a QB competition with a QB taken earlier than him. If that doesn't give him some humility, then nothing well

Highly doubtful.

If he had sat out interviewing with teams AND the bowl game, then maybe.

But marginal QB skills + his own personality + his clown show father?

It takes a rare fool to want any part of that.

Not saying that you meant to do this but the fact that the QB that is fifth on your depth chart will get $46M in cash this year and might actually be the worst QB on the roster is hilarious.

So Shadeur is the 14th quarterback in Browns 2.0 history. Here are the thirteen players that came before him, with career starts in parentheses:

1999 - Round 1 - Tim Couch (59)
2000 - Round 6 - Spergon Wynn (3)
2004 - Round 4 - Luke McCown (10)
2005 - Round 3 - Charlie Frye (23)
2007 - Round 1 - Brady Quinn (20)
2010 - Round 3 - Colt McCoy (36)
2012 - Round 1 - Brandon Weeden (25)
2014 - Round 1 - Johnny Manziel (8)
2016 - Round 3 - Cody Kessler (12)
2017 - Round 2 - DeShone Kizer (15)
2018 - Round 1 - Baker Mayfield (103)
2023 - Round 5 - Dorian Thompson-Robinson (5)
2025 - Round 3 - Dillon Gabriel (0)

Where do we project Sanders will rank on this list by the end of his career? Obviously Baker is number one. It may be recency bias, but I'm inclined to rank Colt ahead of Couch. Despite having few starts, McCoy stuck around the NFL for 13 years. That says something about to me about how the league values a player. Couch was cut after five seasons and couldn't stick on elsewhere as a backup.

Graham Mertz getting drafted might just be one of the surest signs of what an absolutely void of offensive talent draft class this really is.
