If I was a dictator, this would result in 1% of Meta's revenue going to the NEA in perpetuity (and because in this scenario I'm a dictator they can't just discharge that through bankruptcy).

Or just arrest the people involved in the crime. When Aaron Swartz did a fraction of what META did, he faced 35 years in prison. And he wasn't doing it for profit.

I'm surprised that Apple Store don't flag apps that don't meet their standards for encryption/security.

DeepSeek iOS app sends data unencrypted to ByteDance-controlled servers - Ars Technica
Quote:
On Thursday, mobile security company NowSecure reported that the app sends sensitive data over unencrypted channels, making the data readable to anyone who can monitor the traffic. More sophisticated attackers could also tamper with the data while it's in transit. Apple strongly encourages iPhone and iPad developers to enforce encryption of data sent over the wire using ATS (App Transport Security). For unknown reasons, that protection is globally disabled in the app, NowSecure said.

What’s more, the data is sent to servers that are controlled by ByteDance, the Chinese company that owns TikTok. While some of that data is properly encrypted using transport layer security, once it's decrypted on the ByteDance-controlled servers, it can be cross-referenced with user data collected elsewhere to identify specific users and potentially track queries and other usage.
Quote:
In a report, he wrote:

NowSecure recommends that organizations remove the DeepSeek iOS mobile app from their environment (managed and BYOD deployments) due to privacy and security risks, such as:
  • Privacy issues due to insecure data transmission
  • Vulnerability issues due to hardcoded keys
  • Data sharing with third parties such as ByteDance
  • Data analysis and storage in China
Hoog added that the DeepSeek app for Android is even less secure than its iOS counterpart and should also be removed.

The overuse of ChatGPT throughout the government is getting out of hand. A few weeks ago an OPORD was sent out here that was meant to fold the dental clinics on this installation under our hospital. The actual OPORD, as written, would have effectively dissolved all dental leadership in doing so. The OPORD was done by taking another OPORD and throwing it in ChatGPT.

Pretty neat. I need to spend some time to figure out how to do this ...

Here’s the $2,000 fully AI-generated ad that aired during the NBA Finals | The Verge
Quote:
In a post on X, PJ Accetturo, who identifies himself as an “AI Filmmaker,” says Kalshi hired him to create the ad using Google’s text-to-video generator Veo 3.
:
“This took about 300–400 generations to get 15 usable clips,” Acetturo writes. “One person, 2-3 days. That’s a 95% cost reduction vs traditional ads.”

Where I am right now:

In certain contexts, AI is amazing. Some of the stories we are hearing about things like cancer prediction, protein folding, etc. are jaw dropping.

Generative AI is bad, and we'd all be better off if it did not exist. Whatever value we get in not having to write some emails is overwhelmed by the negative value caused by hallucinations, decreased literacy, plagiarism, AI slop flooding everything, environmental stress, etc.

I have no idea what to do about it. Not every bad thing can or should be banned. But I am approaching any policy discussion about AI with those two ideas as my guiding lights.

Basically, Atari chess program beat ChatGPT and Copilot. But the article is written in a way that makes me wonder if there's another side to the story. It doesn't seem there was a "real/sanctioned tournament" but just a hobbyist (?)

After conquering ChatGPT, Atari 2600 Video Chess destroys Microsoft Copilot: 'The vintage silicon mastermind bested me fair and square' | PC Gamer
Quote:
Last month we reported on the somewhat-surprising news that an emulated Atari 2600 running the 1979 software Video Chess had "absolutely wrecked" an overconfident ChatGPT at the game of kings. Fans of schadenfreude rejoice, because Microsoft Copilot thought this was a chance to show its superiority to ChatGPT: And the Atari gave it a beating.

And also this story

Google Gemini crumbles in the face of Atari Chess challenge — admits it would 'struggle immensely' against 1.19 MHz machine, says canceling the match most sensible course of action | Tom's Hardware
Quote:
Google Gemini decided to call off a chess match against the ancient 1.19 MHz Atari 2600 console after a friendly pre-game reminder about what happened to ChatGPT and Microsoft’s Copilot. Citrix Architecture and Delivery specialist Robert Jr. Caruso, now well known for his AI vs Atari Chess challenges, revealed Gemini chickened out, in a chat with The Register.

As was the case with the ChatGPT and Microsoft’s Copilot chess challenges, Caruso reveals that Gemini was initially brimming with confidence regarding its Chess prowess. It was comfortable, if not eager, to throw down the gauntlet against the Atari 2600. At the beginning of Caruso’s chat with Gemini, the chatbot boasted of being able to “think millions of moves ahead and evaluate endless positions.” That sounds familiar in a proverbial ‘pride goeth before destruction’ kind of way.

Caruso then kindly reminded Gemini that he had previously organized Atari Chess bouts with ChatGPT and Microsoft’s Copilot. The Citrix expert went on to explicitly explain to Gemini that other LLMs had displayed outstanding levels of “misplaced confidence,” ahead of their chess matches against the ancient console.

I know there's specialized chess/go programs that can beat humans and that happened pre-ChatGPT. I would like to see a chess/go trained LLM and see what happens.

It's because it's just a fancy chatbot that scrapes Google/Reddit/etc and doesn't actually learn.

This seems like it's going about things the wrong way. If you're going to use AI to "create" a person for a movie, wouldn't it make more sense to create characters that fit each role you want precisely, rather than creating "an actress" who's going to star in whatever?

But yes, creepy. Will people also count down the days until she turns 18?

That makes sense if you're trying to create the best movie, but doing it this way you can create a Star. Then the star can help you sell multiple movies in the same way Jennifer Lawrence or Matt Damon do.

This will end pretty quickly as every AI actor gets turned into a porn star. The porn will be every bit as real as the film/TV work. That AI starlet in the next Disney movie is also in an anal gangbang video.

People people are using LLMs to bury the name of the Muslim man who helped at the Australian shooting and flooding the Internet with the completely made up White male tech worker who they say was the real hero.

So the LLMs are working as their creators intended. But I think we still need to ask ourselves whether they are good for society at large.

Another obvious use of AI will be to let governments and businesses make malicious and/or lazy decisions that ruin people’s lives and then simply blame it on “AI” when they get exposed and everyone will have to agree that they are actually blameless.

I keep having to explain to my boomer boss that ChatGPT doesn't have access to our company's data so he can't use it to evaluate our business portfolio. Also, feeding that info into it will get him fired. I feel like it's turning people into baby brains.

I fear that unless schools create some strong plans to allow while also teaching critical thinking skills. With no critical thinking skills society is at the mercy of whatever person is in charge of the AI of the day.
