Jeff Pearlman told a story on tiktok about covering him. He was sent by SI to do a piece on him and his initial thought was he would find a guy that's rough around the edges but misunderstood. I was reading some more on his career and he's never been more than a platoon leader, which is absolutely insane. To make Major without first serving a company commander is not unheard of, but rare. He also seemed to volunteer for every cushy assignment available and avoided anything remotely challenging. To be an infantry officer without Air Assault, Airborne, or Ranger school. That's pretty much the holy trinity of infantry officer schools if you want to get anywhere. Zero time in a battalion or brigade level position. Zero time at the pentagon. No department or agency level staff positions.

He has the emptiest resume of any infantry officer I've ever seen and he's head of the DoD right now. He's basically the officer equivalent of the E-4 that avoided work and got out as soon as possible, except Hegseth somehow coasted in the national guard for 20 years.
