What hooked you on text sims?

I played the holy hell out of Lance Haffner games for a good 10 year stretch or so starting in 1988. Liked em all but REALLY wore out the college basketball game. Of course, these were all single-season sims but I wanted desperately to find a way to make a career game out of it, so I wrote an EXTREMELY rudimentary basic program that would churn out random names with ratings in certain categories. I would "recruit" these players using a simple system and would enter the players I landed into the game. Obviously I was desperate for a career game because there were many flaws with this (players didn't develop, and all the other teams stayed the same year after year), but it was still a lot of fun.

Now I've got college hoops nirvana with FBCB but that's where it all started. Been dreaming of elaborate career sims since the 80s and I try to keep those days in mind when I run into minor flaws with today's games. Really have come a LONG way -- it's hard to be too disappointed.

Oh and yeah, LOVED those Sporttime games, especially Superstar Ice Hockey. My team, the Menlo Park Wolverines. Tried for a long time, but never could bring them to a title.

Honorable mention to Hockey League Simulator, logged MANY hours with that as well. Had Gretzky too but didn't play that too much, as I liked the management stuff much more.

Used to play Strat-o-matic football and baseball, and made up baseball, soccer, basketball, volleyball,... games with dice and friends.

Much later, ran into baseball mogul. From there, OOTP series... Desperately looking for football sims, I completely missed out on FOF. When Mogulsports released their football mogul fiasco, heard about this forum on the mogul forum. Came here, bought TCY and got hooked real bad...

APBA Football, all those cards were great. In the early 90's I played Pro Football Fantasm this was a great game.
