Post 2005 Seattle Seahawks

STAFF-
Notes:
I have decided to try to give more details about my team. So I will try to list and monitor player skills and development, ticket prices, etc.

My scout continues to fade in his evaluation skills. But there is an amazing and young scout available and I am going to go all out to sign him. He is only 35 and if his skills do not fade early, he should be on my staff for a very long time.
I’m torn what to do about my coach. The man just coached us to a Super Bowl victory, but his skills are fading with age (he’s 62) and there is a complimentary younger coach available. One key factor in my decision to pursue a new coach is the “discipline” skill. I think successful teams do not make mistakes. In training camp I put the emphasis on third downs, two-minute and goal line skills. This all goes into the belief that it’s the little things that win football games (something I learned from watching Chuck Knox coach the Seahawks in the 80’s- Knox’s teams did not make mistakes they capitalized on their opponents mistakes). So a new coach will be hired.

PRE-DRAFT TRANSACTIONS-
Notes:
Fiore retiring was unexpected and now will have to look for his replacement. I guess he got his ring and now he’s done. RB Ferrari, TE Rogers, G Page, LB Simmons, LB Page, CB Stanton, and S Lang are all free agents. I am designating Lang as my Franchise Player. Lang isn’t happy with his playing time and might not sign a long-term deal.

I am $2,620,000 over the salary cap, so need to do something.

I own Chicago’s first round draft choice (from the trade involving WR Murray) and that means I have the first overall pick in the draft. Now I am puzzled. Do I trade down? Do I take the pick? It’s still early and a #1 draft pick won’t cost me zillions, but I am having salary cap problems this season. I also have the 9th and 32nd overall picks. I need to figure something out. I may not be bidding on free agents this year.

All of those 3 and 4 year contracts are coming back to bite me on the ass as many of the players on my roster will be free agents next year and all are demanding a lot of money to resign.

After resigning all those players I am still over the cap by 500K.I am forced to trade a few of my older and/or high salary players. This is where that injury to DE C. Brown is really hurting me as well. DE T. Brackens is getting older (10th year) and is well paid ($4,300,000). I have my 2004 top pick in Pritchett who is the future and DE’s Banks and Holliday to cover the loss. 15 year vet LB M. Lewis will also be traded. This one really hurts. Even though I knew when I signed him that he would not stay the length of the deal, he has been a key part of my defense plus I am already losing two LB’s to free agency. These two trades get me just $5,000,000 under the cap. I’m considering trading a few of this years draft choices for future picks. I am also hoping that some quality free agents are left after the draft and training camp because I will not be able to bid on any. I may need to do another trade or two with players I am about to lose in 2006 to free avgency.

QB C. Paine looks like he could start for another team and I will never be able to afford him next season, so he is on the block.

One thing I look for when trading is a team in the NFC first. If I must trade with a team in the AFC, I try to avoid an AFC West team as much as possible.

CAR apparently agrees with my assessment of Paine and we get a 2006 1st round pick for Paine, who we drafted in the 2nd round. This trade gets me down to $5,700,000 under the cap.

Luckily I have drafted well at WR. Both WR Szporluk and Cedeno are on the final year of their contracts. Cedeno, I’ll keep. Szporluk should bring me a decent pick. CLE gives me a 2005 2nd rounder and a 2006 5th rounder.

T C. McIntosh didn’t develop into the player I thought he would and he will be a free agent after this season, so I will trade him. Meadows and McGuire are both very good starters. I trade McIntosh for Miami’s 2006 2nd rounder. Now I am $9,110,000 under the cap.

CB’s Donovan and Rivera are both going to be free agents after this season and I need to move one. Rivera is better and would get me more trade value, but he is not going to cost me much more than Donovan, so Donovan will be traded. I will try to use draft picks as well to get a higher choice in return. I trade him to BUF for 2007 1st and 3rd rounders and added my pick in the 2nd round (which is the last pick of the round). I am now $9,880,000 under the cap. I still need to move one more player. I have three 1st , four 2nd, one 3rd, one 4th, two 6th, and a 7th round picks in the draft.

DT G. Jackson is one of my oldest and highest paid players, I will try to package him with a draft pick or two for a younger DT with potential. STL gives me DT Prescott- who has 3 years left on a contract that I will pay 970K first year on and is in his 2nd year- for Jackson and a 6th round pick. I am now $12,550,000 under the cap.

I’m not without worry, yet. I still have several key players who will be free agents at the end of the season and I am not sure I can sign a free agent, my draft choices and resign the guys I need to sign.

There are plenty of talented free agents, including DE J. Kearse, T O. Pace and QB P. Manning. I think I will hold off on signing free agents and see if any do not get signed. This is when I wish there were a draft preview because I would like to know if I should use this #1 overall choice. I just won the Super Bowl and I have the first overall pick. Life is good.

Manning signed with the Steelers. PIT also signed my FA G Page in the first week of free agency and has the top bid on Pace. Kearse resigned with TEN. SEA FA LB Simmons signed with the Chiefs. I hate to see that. Pace signed with the Patriots.

Unprotected/Expansion Draft- N/A

DRAFT-
Notes:
There are a couple choices available that would merit a 1st overall pick in this, a weak, draft.
RB T. Serra, Vanderbilt
Ht: 5-10
Wt: 219
Breakaway speed: 86/86
Short Yardage: 36/88
Third Down Running: 60/60
Yards Per Carry: 39/97
Catching: 52
Catch Frequency: 43/100
Third Down catching: 76/76
Carrying: 78/78
Endurance: 97/97
Loyalty:Avg
Play for Winner: Low

My current starting RB’s stats took like this:

RB G. Wright
Ht: 6-0
Wt: 201
Breakaway Speed: 72
Short Yardage: 44
Third Down Running: 71
Yards Per Carry: 56/62
Catching: 72
Catch Frequency: 71/72
Third Down catching: 45
Carrying: 88
Endurance: 76
Loyalty: Avg
Play for Winner: Very Low

Serra is certainly an upgrade. Wright has been doing just fine for me, but will be a free agent at the end of the season and I have been paying him a 2nd round pick salary. Should I just pay that salary to Serra and trade Wright?

The other two prospects look like this-

CB N. Tice, Virginia Tech
Ht: 5-11
Wt: 184
Run Defense: 40/90
Man-to-Man Defense: 41/78
Zone Defense: 41/65
Interceptions: 92/92
Punt Returns: 50/50
Kick Returns: 37/37
Endurance: 94/94
Loyalty: Low
Play for Winner: High

WR N. Donnalley, Lycoming
Ht: 6-0
Wt: 173
Catching: 33/68
Yards Per Catch: 54/54
Catch Frequency: 35/75
Third Down Catching: 86
Carrying: 59/59
Punt Returns: 56/56
Kick Returns: 100/100
Endurance: 91/91
Loyalty: Very Low
Play for Winner: Very Low

I’m going with Serra and will trade Wright. Tice went #2 to Raleigh.

While WR Donnalley is still available at #9, I am going to go in the other direction and take the next best player available, a LB. Overall the draft went well. I was able to get a few good back-ups. The steal of my draft was in the 6th round- my final pick, WR McCarthy.

POST-DRAFT TRANSACTIONS-
Notes:
Drafting Serra means that Wright needed to be traded and for a former 2nd round draft choice I really scored.

I should have traded the #1 pick away and went with Wright, as I am forced to make too many roster moves to sign my draft picks. I have no choice but to trade DT Pryce. Serra better be a HoFer.

ROSTER/SCOUT OVERVIEW-
Notes:
I am expecting a good year from LB Coffey, he was really starting to come into his own at the end of last season. This should be an All-Pro year for him. This is also the year for WR Bauer and Brewer to step up. RB Serra will have a mircoscope on him because he was the #1 overall pick and my DT’s all need to play above their abilities while getting help from the rest of the defense.

Notes:
RB G. Wright, who I traded to make room for Serra, was 3rd in the league in rushing with 1,606 yards and 14 TD’s.

Overall I am very disappointed with this season. I had a couple of key injuries, but that’s no excuse. I just had too many roster changes from my Super Bowl teams.
