FBCB - Loyola Marymount

Well thanks to the writings of Skydog and several others I made the FBCB purchase this weekend. Thanks a lot...now I'll be hooked onto another sim game for a couple of months....haha.

Anyway...I was wondering if anyond had tried to recreate the style of play that Loyola Marymount made famous back in the late 80's? You know with Hank Gathers and Bo Kimble? Like ...maxing out the use of 3pter's...pace press and decreasing the use of motion...etc. And has this worked? I am kinda intrigued by it but right now I've got a career going with Minnesota just so I can recruit locally where I grew up...SD...ND and MN. But I would be willing to try something out like this if no one has tried it yet. Great game so far!

You can definitely do it, but you need the right players. High stamina is a must for as many players as possible, as well as of course three point shooting, and some guys with good stealing ability to keep up the press. I've had teams that scored over 100 points in a lot of games in a season before. If you don't have high endurance guys though they get tired, commit fouls, etc. It's definitely fun to experiment with.

I actually run a slightly watered down version with my Leathernecks. As Peregrine said before, it's vital to have good stamina across the board and you want to make sure all of your guys are capable of stealing or blocking shots, the more turnovers the better.

Since I started off with a prestige of 12, I wasn't able to garner the high stats that you are probably looking for, but I still averaged around 85ppg per contest which if you saw the kind of talent I had, was actually quite the feat.

Like I said, it's not quite Loyola, but the games are certainly fun to watch. Atleast for the level I'm at currently, we are doing alright. (Prestige is at 51 now)

I have tried with UC Riverside, but I was getting some of the wrong type of players and after learning that, I went a different direction. If you want to do that I'd look for the following:

Guards & SF: high stamina, high steals, high inside scoring, good handling (3pt and high perimeter D a bonus); at least 1 decent passer and 1 really good shooter in the bunch.

PF & C: decent stamina, high inside scoring, very high rebounds (post D, blocks a bonus); at least 1 monster board man of the two if not both.

I made the mistake of trying to recruit guys strickly on high shooting skills, which aren't really as important for a high paced team I think.

Did anyone read the article in ESPN the Mag about that DIII team that scores like 130 PPG, gives up nearly the same, and takes like, 70 3pt shots a game? They were 11-5 at the time of the article.

That was Grinnell College. There's some threads around here about them.

Yeah that's some pretty revolutionary ball that the coach is implementing there. That might be fun to watch for a while but then it's like...is this really basketball that we're playing here? The fundamentals of players have already gone down in today's ball...this can't be helping.
