The Dolphins gave up a conditional 6th round pick and a starter to be named later? I know Boston is a huge ahole but you gotta believe that a 6th rounder and a backup is a pretty good deal for someone of his talent. Even if it doesn't work out, you basically lose nothing for it. Someone must have jinxed the Chargers. First the Ryan Leaf mess and now David Boston. I'd hate to be a San Diego fan. Them's trying times.

The reasoning down here, such as it is, follows: Dolphins WR coach was Boston's WR coach in Arizona during the time he was most productive with the Cardinals. The hope is that said coach can hold Boston's hand and get him to somewhat simulate those years that made the Chargers want to throw all that money his way when they signed him. Now instead of worrying about a premier WR in the draft to compliment Chris Chambers, the Dolphins can concentrate on drafting some big bodies for the O-Line (especially since they only have five mostly journeyman guys under contract at the moment) and maybe draft a decent WR who falls to a later round.

Definately worth a 6th round flyer. The guy has the potential to be an offensive menace. Likewise, he has a propensity to be a locker room menace. If the 'phins can get more of the former, and less of the later, then it's a steal.
How much impact would a 6th rounder have vs. Boston if he only has an average year? Easy trigger to pull. |

Typo. I called the "starter" a backup in the next sentence. I'm sure the Dolphins aren't giving up a starter if a 6th rounder was all the Chargers wanted. MikeBrown - Didn't know his old receivers coach was in Miami. The trade looks even better for Miami. Anyone else think Marty Schottenheimer is going to end up going out like Mike Ditka did? |

Like AgPete said, Boston is a huge a-hole, but I'm surprised that no one offered more than a measly 6th round pick and a scrub player. That's basically a riskless transaction for the Dolphins since they won't assume any of the salary cap hit from Boston's signing bonus (it remains with the Chargers). If Boston doesn't work out, the Dolphins can just cut him, having lost very little in the process. Sheesh, if all it took was a 6th round pick and a scrub to get Boston, then I bet the Ravens are wishing they'd gone for Boston instead of Terrell "I Only Want To Play For Philly Because You Told Me I Can't" Owens. :o

I believe the Dolphins are picking up some of the guarantees in the contract, so it is not completely risk free. The fact no one else would give more is some indication of what other teams think of him. Notice that Philly did not get involved.

"Cornerback Jamar Fletcher, Miami's first-round pick in 2001, is among the players the Dolphins and Chargers have discussed including as the final piece of the deal. Fletcher has struggled throughout his tenure in Miami." "The player who signed a seven-year, $47 million deal with the team last year before falling out of favor, is expected to collect nearly all of that money. The Chargers will make those payments because, while the Dolphins were extremely interested in Boston, they had no interest in paying guaranteed salary off a contract they did not negotiate." http://www.sun-sentinel.com/sports/f...dolphins-front "The name of the player the Dolphins have agreed to trade will be revealed today after he is notified."

Be still my aching heart! The Dolphins have actually made two competent decisions in a row. Getting Boston for a sixth round pick AND sending Fletcher far far far away. Now if we can just figure out how not to screw up the first round pick?

So, the benefit for the Chargers is a 6th round draft pick and possibly a cornerback who couldn't properly cover my grandmother? They don't even get the salary?
What worries me is that these deals rarely work for the Dolphins. They love getting these troubled guys for very little risk but it usually backfires on them. |

I like the last part of the fanball article... Views Wanny went on to suggest that Boston will not be handed a starting job opposite Chris Chambers and that his play and effort in offseason camps will determine his role. Obviously, the onus is on the overgrown receiver to find his way back somewhere near the 228-pound mark he played at in Arizona. That, of course, would compromise how good he and his nipple rings look on South Beach.

From what I heard the Phins are seriously considering a move for the Browns Dennis Northcutt to protect themselves. That may be a good move, but they really, really need to get Ogunleye extended as a top priority. Guys who make 15 sacks are really, really rare.
