your internet radio suggestions? (and mine)
I was just curious as to what everyone here listens to online? I listen all day at work, but would like a few more options to switch up my regular listening. Working at a horrible NYC radio station, I need anything to distract me from listening to my company's own mindless broadcast.
My regular listening: 97X - WOXY - Cincinnati, Ohio The best radio station I've ever heard. Best described as an excellent mix of commerical and college radio. Their internet listenership is apparently far greater than their local listenership, as it's basically a non-factor in ratings in Ohio. ESPN Radio - The Tony Kornheiser show I couldn't care less about the rest of ESPN radio, but Tony Kornheiser is pure gold. Most of you might know him from Pardon the Interuption with Michael Wilbon. His show is a hilarious and entertaining mix of sports and pop culture, with plenty of great interviews and guest stars. I've been a huge fan of this show (and Kornheiser in general) for 3+ years now. Rhino Records Under their freebies section you can listen to the entire audio of whichever album they are featuring. Right now it's the NYC underground classic Marquee Moon by Television. Your Suggestions?

101.9 WDET FM Detroit Detroit's best radio station by far. It is a public radio station with no commercials. Martin Bandyke from Noon to 3 PM weekdays and Liz Copeland from Midnight to 5 AM are my two favorite DJs.
The internet feed cuts out sometimes though because of an agreement with the RIAA. Apparently they have to shut off the feed of they play more than two songs in a row of the same artist. |

I listen to 400's mix, or Launch.yahoo.com (it's much better now that after three days I've told it which genres/songs I like .. But I still want to figure a way to get my Mp3's streaming to the net, which I then listen to at work

I live within 97X's range, and I can attest to the fact that it's the best radio station I've ever heard as well. It's all I listen to in the car. The reason they're such a non-factor in ratings here, is 2 reasons, I think. 1. The wide variety of music they play turns a lot more people off than it does on. 2. The station is only 5,000 Watts as I am aware of it. They would love to expand to a more powerful signal, but are mired in a "full" radio market.... there is a Christian radio station that transmits on 97.7 north of here, and southeast there is a country music station also on 97.7. On a poor reception day, I can still usually pick up 97X pretty well, but get frequent brief encroachments by the other 2 stations. In other words, their 2 main markets are Dayton and Cincinnati, and their signal strength is not really good enough to be heard strongly in either market. I'm so glad to hear that someone else listens to 97X, and would highly recommend them to anyone else who is tired of standard commercial radio and their extremely short playlists.

I like electronic music and that means this Milwaukee station I can't remeber. For my Christian needs there's some Phoenix station. They're both linked on my other computer but I enjoy them both.

I like to goto mp3.com and stream there top song lists for whatever genre I feel like. The best part is if you do not like a song you can always skip it.

104.5 KFOG - San Francisco is a good commercial station. They play mostly well-known artists, but by far a wider variety of well-known artists than any other Northern California station, and they play lots of live tracks from concerts they have sponsored and performances in their studios. It appears that you can still listen to it over the internet.
107.5 KPIG - Freedom, CA Looks like you now have to subscribe, but it's an eclectic station that plays mostly stuff you won't here on most commercial radio stations. Lots of folk and roots music. I haven't listened to either over the internet much, but I always listen to them in the car when I'm in their broadcast area. |

I know nobody but me probably cares, but 97X is going off the air within a week or so. The end of an era for music fans in Southwest Ohio. It was going to try and make an internet only go of it, but they haven't found enough funding, so both webcast and terracast are going to be gone as of May 12 or 13 (if not sooner).
Very very sad to those of us who have lived with the station for over a decade and know many of those on the air and behind the scenes.

And of course, another one of cthomer's orignal suggestions is off the air, too. Tony Kornheiser's show was taken off the air about a month ago, though I'm not sure if it was cancelled or if Mister Tony decided to get out of the radio biz...

Mister Tony decided to leave the gig... but it's not entirely clear whether he jumped or was softly, gradually nudged. As loyal listeners know, he and the ESPN brass have had their clashes, and it seems like he started to feel that the radio show was more trouble than it was worth. He still is doing PTI and some local radio and TV stuff, still writing for the Post a bit, and still seems busy. Maybe the radio gig had just run its course for him. Still a tough loss. |
