QS, you may not have read it because it didn't appear until later in the thread, but I made a distinction based upon oral and written communication. Spoken and written English are distinct "beasts" and I believe greater tolerance and allowances should be made for oral communication. I notice your examples (as did many in this thread) focus on written communication. Do you feel that the same standards and expectations should be held for spoken English?

No, I don't. In fact, I have pretty loose standards altogether for any sort of informal communications -- I really don't much care how people speak when among friends, how they type on the internet, etc. (Though I think it's extremely rare for people to make ghastly grammatical errors in those contexts and then manage to write perfectly when it's called for)
No - I draw basically the same line you do, though probably more firmly. My line is basically formal/informal (I would expect someone making an oral presentation in a formal setting to use proper grammar) but I think I'm basically with you there. |
