College Hoops 2k5: A Legacy
I was sitting at home watching a preseason tournament game on NBA TV when I got a call. It was long distance, so at first I was going to let it ring, but I picked it up anyways. It was Rob Bernardi and he said something about being athletic director at a school called Nicholls State in Thibodeaux, LA. At first I thought he was joking- the only coaching experience I had was when I was an assitant in the Hungarian League last summer, and even that was just because a friend from university had signed there and wanted me to come along for the ride.
They offered me a 3 year contract giving me triple what I made in Hungary. I quickly accepted, only, I didn't even know what I was in for... |

When I got to the school's campus, I met Bernardi for coffee. He said that his assistant, who was supposed to take the job went elsewhere, so I could even hire my entire staff. Now, I don't know many basketball minds, so I had him look at some potential coaches that I would then choose from.
I chose two guys who had little experience in the NCAA, but were both long-time coaches in Canada. I figured I might as well give them a shot since I was a shot in the dark as well. They went 6-21 last year, but only got 1 win in conference play. This year probably won't be any better, because our schedule starts off with 3 tough opponents, 2 of which were ranked in the pre-season 25. Code:

It will definitely be something I try and help in recruiting. The regular rotation will be Veal, Geason, Blaszczynski, Gray and King off of the bench with Westmoreland and Smith seeing time in blowouts, when there are injuries, or foul trouble. 2004 SCHEDULE 11/21 @ Mississippi St 11/24 @ Auburn 11/27 @ Michigan St 12/11 @ Lipscomb 12/13 @ Ole Miss 12/18 vs MD-Eastern Shore 12/21 vs Texas Southern 12/29 @ Jackson St 1/6 vs UT-Arlington 1/8 vs Sam Houston St 1/12 @ Texas State 1/14 @ UT-San Antonio 1/19 vs Stephen F. 11/21 - Nicholls State (0-0) @ #12 Mississippi State (2-2)
We went into the game hoping to keep it close. Jason Wilkins, a senior, kept us close in the first half scoring 9 quick points. Unfortunately, he also racked up 3 fouls, and only played 8 minutes in the first half. Their key player in the game was Shane Power who had 15 points in the first half, and ended up with 22 but was only averaging 7.8 PPG before hand. Our biggest problems were fouls and the lack of big men. We only had 14 free throw attempts compared to their 29. They outrebounded us 37-22 and outscored us 44-28 in the paint. This made me go and recruit big men even more seriously then any other position. Final: 93-63 Mississippi State Gleeson- 23 min, 2 pts, 4 reb, 2 ast Veal- 15 min, 4 pts, 3 reb, 1 ast Searles- 24 mins, 9 pts, 3 reb, 2 ast Westmoreland- 7 mins, 2 pts, 4 reb, 1 ast Wilkins- 21 mins, 18 pts, 2 reb, 1 ast, 4 fls Geason- 19 mins, 2 pts, 2 reb, 2 ast Blaszczynski- 11 mins, 5 pts, 1 blk Depron - 28 mins, 8 pts, 2 reb, 5 ast Gray- 12 mins, 2 pts, 2 ast Djoukeng- 23 mins, 9 pts, 1 reb, 1 ast King- 13 mins, 4 pts, 1 reb, 3 ast Smith- 4 mins Last edited by Booj : 01-02-2005 at 11:35 AM. I forgot to say before that I am playing the game in 'Coach Mode', 20 minute halves.
-- 11/24 NICHOLLS ST. (0-1) @ AUBURN (1-1) My goal, after keeping it close most of the first half, was to be down 10 at halftime, and that's what we accomplished. We had 10 turnovers in the first half alone, and 16 for the game overall. We didn't have a monster game from anyone, but we did improve two factors from the Mississippi State game. We made it to the free throw line more than they did, and also was only outscored 34-32 in the paint. Rebounding was also close between the two teams. Another expected loss. Final: 87-73 Auburn Gleeson- 15 min, 2 pts, 2 reb, 0 ast Veal- 23 min, 9 pts, 7 reb, 0 ast Searles- 22 mins, 6 pts, 3 reb, 0 ast Westmoreland- 7 mins, 0 pts, 2 reb, 0 ast Wilkins- 27 mins, 17 pts, 7 reb, 6 ast, Geason- 14 mins, 2 pts, 4 reb, 1 ast Blaszczynski- 16 mins, 8 pts, 3 reb, 1 ast Depron - 28 mins, 15 pts, 0 reb, 7 ast, 3 stl, 1 blk Gray- 13 mins, 0 pts, 1 reb, 1 ast Djoukeng- 24 mins, 11 pts, 2 reb, 6 ast King- 14 mins, 3 pts, 1 reb, 4 ast Smith- 4 mins -- 11/27 NICHOLLS ST (0-2) @ #10 MICHIGAN ST (2-0) I accidentally simmed this game, so I don't have a game report. I didn't really need one, though. Final: 90-38 Michigan St. Gleeson- 21 min, 7 pts, 2 reb, 0 ast Veal- 8 min, 2 pts, 2 reb, 0 ast Searles- 27 mins, 6 pts, 7 reb, 0 ast Westmoreland- 8 mins, 0 pts, 3 reb, 0 ast Wilkins- 28 mins, 6 pts, 3 reb, 3 ast, Geason- 22 mins, 9 pts, 2 reb, 0 ast Blaszczynski- 18 mins, 2 pts, 2 reb, 2 ast Depron - 24 mins, 2 pts, 4 reb, 3 ast Gray- 10 mins, 2 pts, 0 reb, 0 ast Djoukeng- 17 mins, 2 pts, 0 reb, 1 ast King- 12 mins, 0 pts, 0 reb, 0 ast Smith- 5 mins -- Our next game wasn't for another two weeks, so we had time to hit the recruiting trail pretty heavily. In the in-season Recruit signing week, we had two good recruits sign up with us. Both are JuCo Freshmen, so they will be Sophomores next year, but both should bring a "big-man" game to our team next year. 11/28 SIGNED PF DOMINICK MUNYAGI (JC-FR) 6'9, 235 *** NEW ORLEANS, LA 12/5 SIGNED SF STEPHANE COLWELL (JC-FR) 6'6, 210 *** MOBILE, AL We were targeting these two guys from the beginning of the season, so we're happy to have them aboard. Colwell will most likely take the job at SF, while Munyagi will either get the not at C or PF. Of course, I could make a better assessment once we see the numerical ratings. -- 12/11 NICHOLLS ST (0-3) @ LIPSCOMB (2-2) This game is one I went into thinking we could eke out. I started C Veal instead of Gleeson who had been struggling. Veal would have started the Michigan St game if I hadn't simulated it. Veal's start ended prematurely, however. He racked up 2 fouls in the first 45 seconds of the game and was sent to the bench. It was a tough game, back and forth for the entire duration. They hit a basket at the end of the first half to go up 1 at the break. The second half was more of the same. We had way too many fouls. Westmoreland, who came in because of the big-men being in foul trouble, had 4 fouls in 2 minutes, and was sent to the bench for the rest of the game. Veal racked up his 5th foul late in the 2nd half, and I put in Geason, not Gleeson, to play center the rest of the way. Our clutch 3-point man, Jason Wilkins hit a big shot with 10.6 seconds left to tie the game at 56, and sent the game into Overtime. Our team was playing very well through overtime, as we outscored them 7-2 and won our first game of the season. Final: 63-58 Nicholls State Gleeson- 19 min, 0 pts, 4 reb, 0 ast Veal- 12 min, 0 pts, 4 reb, 0 ast, 5 fls Searles- 32 mins, 8 pts, 10 reb, 2 ast Westmoreland- 2 mins, 0 pts, 2 reb, 0 ast, 4 fls Wilkins- 32 mins, 23 pts, 6 reb, 1 ast, Geason- 16 mins, 7 pts, 8 reb, 0 ast Blaszczynski- 10 mins, 4 pts, 3 reb, 0 ast Depron - 29 mins, 11 pts, 1 reb, 5 ast Gray- 13 mins, 3 pts, 1 reb, 1 ast Djoukeng- 33 mins, 7 pts, 2 reb, 6 ast King- 9 mins, 0 pts, 0 reb, 3 ast Smith- 3 mins Last edited by Booj : 01-02-2005 at 11:36 AM. |
