FOF4: Contract Oops?
My star CB of 13 years was coming up for a new contract. His level of play had not dropped, and his ratings were all very good. My plan was to franchise him after the season, and offer a contract after training camp if he looked like he was holding up.
Four weeks before the end of the season, he blew an ACL. An injury that would keep him out his 14th season. Of course i did not franchise him, nor did I plan to offer him a bid in free agency. Instead, this player accepted a 2 year / 28M contract from Carolina that included a 16M bonus. This might be something you would see if he were healthy, but not as a guy who will be on IR for a year, and then..... Does FOF4 not pay attention to injuries when it comes to contracts? (A point of comparison, the next "best" CB went for 57M over 5 years with a 12M bonus. he is only 27)

Hmm, by the sound of it, it doesn't pay attention to injuries. Time for a little "study" on the issue.

sometimes the game just doesnt make it clear in free agency. there have been a few times ive signed a player, only to later find he's out for 12 more weeks or so. sure, its on the players card, but who really looks before the season starts?

The guy ended up giving the other team 5 good games (as their most costly asset) and then he retired.

I had almost the exact same situation happen with a star DE of mine. He blew out a knee with 5 games left in his free agency year and was to miss the entire next year or so. Like you, Fritz, I had been planning to franchise him, but bailed when his knee went kerput. Come free agency time he was signed to a monster 5 year deal by my arch-rival (the Vikings - I play the Packers), which I have to admit made me smile.
Very unrealistic, a bit annoying, but in my case it was plenty entertaining. |
