Oh, I left off the *really* frustrating part. This is at the beginning of free agency. So yeah, he was one week away from healing enough so I could cut him.

What's worse is that this was going to be a tough salary cap season to begin with. I won't be picking up this career until tonight or tomorrow morning, but my guess is that I'm going to have to do one of two unappealing things to field a full team this year:

1. renegotiate with this guy, giving him even more bonus money to sit the bench

or

2. trade the guy I franchised who is, you guessed it, my other starting WR from last year.

You play with wide receivers in your line-up? That's sissified football if I've ever seen it.

Which one, Poehnert (52 catches, 981 yards, 18.8 ypc) , Logan (51 catches, 842 yards), or Truett (93 catches, 1584 yards)?

Those stats sound good until people realize those are CAREER totals.

Actually, a guy coming off an injury like that is likely to sign a pretty reasonable contract without a ton of bonus money. He'll know he's a min-sal guy. What's he asking for?

Not unless he was a stud starter the season previous, and got hurt in the playoffs.

I'm guessing you arent so lucky here.

He doesn't want a TON, but it ain't minisal, either. If I recall, the bonus request is somewhere north of $3M. I'll let y'all know that one later today.

A gradual one, I think. It is fairly easy to identify certain positions' gradual-boom players in SP.

My experience shows that this is true up until the ratings drop hits. Once it drops, the guy tends to have a realistic expectation of what he is worth. Unlike real NFL receivers

multiply this frustration by a million billion and we know what its like to be the GM for the Browns.

SD, you could always play him and see how he produces. Maybe he will out perform his new ratings.

OK....now for solid answers to questiosn posed here....

1. Manning was rated 25/38 in the draft by my scout, with 14 volatility. Still, his combine numbers were very strong, so I grabbed him even though I really didn't need a WR at the time. I just couldn't turn him down that late in the draft. He jumped to 26/42 at the beginning of FA-2, and was 31/49 after his first training camp, so he did begin to break out early. He was 40/54 after 2007 training camp, and 43/56 after that of 2008. He got up to 58/61 by the beginning of the 2009 season, but crashed down to 29/30 after his injury.

2. I "misunderestimated" the guess of his salary request. He wants:

B: $2.41M
1: $880K
2: $2.01M
3: $2.51M
4: $3.35M
5: $3.94M

A good bit less than his contract, but way more than he's likely to be worth, too.---

Id probably just renegotiate with him, give him the 2.4 million dollar bonus, then cut his ass in training camp(or IR him and cut him the following year to split out the cap hit). Or wait until training camp to sign your rookies and then cut him there.

this is why if we get FOF2006 we need the ability to reach injury settlements

I can't cut him until the preseason, due to his 1-week-left injury. That's the crux of the problem. My preference would have been to cut him immediately so I could use the cap relief on a FA, but that ain't gonna happen. Oh well, I renegotiated with him, and will probably cut him at the beginning of FA1 next season.

Good idea. I say that for each advantage the player gets, like the ability to reach an injury settlement, there needs to be a disadvantage to make the game harder. Like players dissing other players or the coach or the team as the whole. It could be called the TO feature.
