Another Hold 'em Hand

From a tournament at a B&M casino last night.

160 or so entries in a no limit tournament now down to 22 players at 3 tables.
Top 18 cash, with there being a pretty steep increase in the pay amount at the final table break (the final 9).

Blinds are 800-1600, with a 200 chip ante.

The hero has about $14,000 in chips, which places him slightly below average.

He is in the cut off seat and looks down to find pocket fours.

The play is folded to him. He raises 3x the big blind to $4800.

The button reraises over the top all in. The button has the hero covered by a small amount. The hero hasn't played with the button long enough to have a solid read on him, however the button has been razzing the hero about stealing the blinds on several hands.

The big blind, who is short stacked, calls the all in for his remaining $4000 chips.

Hero's action. Thoughts?

Yes, you are getting fairly attractive odds to call here, but your 44 is almost certainly in trouble -- at best you're in a race with the bigger stack. Fairly likely, you've got to dodge something like 8-12 different cards to win against two players with two overs here. And that's assuming you're on top right now -- not already behind a better pair.

The remaining $9,200 in chips won't be a lot... but you still have enough to hold on for a good double-up opportunity. I think that's your better play here.

You'd have to think you are facing 2 over cards at best. Perhaps a better pair. Doesn't look good for the hero to call unless you are comfortable at best being a slight favorite to win the hand.

Looking at 10K left if you fold though you only go around 5 more times. Tough call. Being so close to cashing its tough. Normally I would push in and hope he didn't have a pair. For some reason from way far away just reading this I think he had an over pair in the hole.

Folding is probably the sound thing to do.

Calling two all-ins with pocket fours is kind of just begging to get knocked out.

Fold and next time you find you self in that situation (first in, less than 10xBB), push.

My thoughts as well.

I was busy entertaining my in-laws last night, while a couple of my buddies hit up Hollywood Park.

We've debated this hand ad nauseum this morning.

Unfortunately, my buddy didn't drop the hand. He called.

The button turned over jacks and the blind had A-x (7-9 range, so still an overcard). A four didn't hit and he was done, just out of the money.

He said he immediately felt like he had made a poor play. Our third emphatically states he would make that call every time--based on pot odds and the fact that at that point he's trying to win the tournament (or at least make the top 9).

One thing I'm wondering though, is whether I change my mind if the blind tosses his hand.
