The Paul W. "Bear" Bryant Challenge Main Thread

A long, long time ago, on a message board far, far away, called the Sideline, I went through 40 years of a dynasty in FOF2 known as the Paul W. "Bear" Bryant Challenge. The premise was simple: control the Atlanta Falcons, and only use game-generated SEC players. It was very fun and challenging, but had one drawback: the luck factor. Some years, the game would generate a whole bunch of good SEC players, and others none at all. I would go several seasons in a row without picking in the first round, then trade up to pick four or five times in the first round in the same year, and oddities like that. Well, it occurred to me that now we have a decently-importing TCY, I can "make my own luck." I will control two teams: the Alabama Crimson Tide in TCY, and the Atlanta Falcons in FOF2K4. There will be very minor house rules:

ALABAMA: No more than one call and one visit per recruit per week.

ATLANTA: Empty Cupboard. Fictional Roster. Sim through 2004. Take control in 2005 by importing 2004 TCY Class. Only SEC players allowed on team.

I'm not certain as to what level of detail I'll be posting in the thread(s). I know that I'll be attempting to strike a balance between posting enough detail to increase my level of immersion and identification wtih my players, but little enough not to slow me down too terribly much. I hope to make these my long-term careers, though, so perhaps moving along more slowly than normal won't be too annoying. This seems like a good time in text sim history to start a big endeavor like this, as it sounds like there will be no new text sim to grab my interest until Jim's mid-year announcement.

OK. Just beginning to work on my first report, and it is clear to me that in terms of organization, I'd prefer to use this thread as a "clearing house" for both dynasties, and do the detailed season-by-season stuff in two other, separate threads. I'll use this post to link to each season, and subsequent posts in this thread for a general recap of each season.

Alabama Crimson Tide 2007

The Bear Bryant challenge... I think that dynasty was the one that got me into dynasty reporting on FOF.

I actually still have the print-out of it--from early 2000. Yup, just about five years ago.

FYI: The Alabama 2004 link above doesn't go to the correct page.

Looking forward to reading the dynasty...have enjoyed the others you've done.

Alabama goes 8-3 in the regular season, finishing 2nd in the SEC West. We go on to win the Seattle Bowl 54-32 over NC State. SEC Teams go 6-0 in Bowl Games, and UGA wins the whole shebang, stocking our first draft class quite well. Junior QB Artie Gaylor throws for over 2,600 yards, and the two-headed monster running back combo of Cory Urbina and Bernie DeMeester combine for over 1,500 yards rushing and 18 TD's.

The Falcons aren't run by me this year.

The Falcons really struggle, as expected, to a 1-15 season. LSU's MLB Matthew Lynn is the lone bright spot, winning DPOY, DROY, and 1st Team All Pro, as he racked up 147 tackles, 46 assists and 2.5 sacks. I drafted him 1(31). The best 'Bama player on the team was FL Kyle Moln, an undrafted FA who caught 35 passes for 493 yards and a TD. Moln looks like he may be a breakout player.

However, the Crimson Tide comes to the table with a stunning-late season showing, ending UGA's 24-game winning streak with a blowout in the SEC Championship Game. We go on to win our Bowl game as well, to finish 10-3 on the year. Artie Gaylor misses a few games, but still throws for 2171 yards and 23 TD's.

1. Georgia starts out a little too easy: very high Prestige and solid academics.
2. The Bear didn't coach in Athens, now did he?

2006 Falcons
Former Bama QB Artie Gaylor gets taken in the fourth round of the draft, and takes over as the starter, but with only slightly better results. We finish 2-14. Kyle Moln continues to look like a future breakout player.

2006 Crimson Tide
After a 9-2 regular season, we lose 45-21 to UT in the SEC Championship game. We defeat Syracuse in the Gator Bowl for our 2nd straight 10-win season. Off the field, however, we struggle. Three guys fail classes, and we have the #111 recruiting class in the country.
