Super Troopers: Am I Just Too Old?

I hear so many people talking about how funny this movie is...but I found it rather painful to watch last night. I only got about 2/3 of the way through and gave up.

I love stupid comedies - Fletch and Airplaine are two of my favorite movies of all-time, but I also enjoy many other silly movies like Top Secret, Real Genius, Revenge of the Nerds, Police Academy...all that crap. True, those are all from my youth, but I also enjoy more current fare like Office Space, American Pie and even got laughs from Dude, Where's My Car? So, it's not like I don't like the genre.

But Super Troopers? Seriously, what is funny about it? Is there something wrong with me? Help me out here?

I didn't get it, either. I was rather disappointed.

I could have written that post. I turned it off 10 minutes into it. Completely did not get it or think it was remotely funny. But then again, I didn't get Dude Where's My Car, either. Nor did I get Napoleon Dynamite, although it had a couple of funny moments in it.

I still enjoy stupid movies, but none that have been made recently that I can think of.

I guess this is just how it is - the first crack in the generation gap we will see. I assume Shorty would think Strange Brew is unfunny, which is beyond my comprehension.

I thought that movie was very funny. I guess you have to be into that kind of humor. But the first scene of that movie with the kids getting screwed with by cops was too dern funny.

I am almost 30, so I'm not sure it's the generation gap. It's just a different kind of humor.

Well, what kind of humor would you call it? What makes that kind of humor different from other stupid movies that are actually funny? At this point, I would classify it as its own brand of "unfunny humor."

Well, comedy/humor is one of the most subjective things. I just saw Super Troopers for the first time about a month ago. I loved it. I thought it was hillarious. Easily one of the funnier movies I've seen in the last five years or so. That said, I generally don't like "stupid" comedies. I hate pretty much all the Farley brother movies (Dumb & Dumber, Something About Mary, etc.), I saw a little bit of "Anchorman" and did nothing for me, but I did love "40 Year Old Virgin." Like DD, I also loved Top Secret, Real Genius, Revenge of the Nerds (first one), Police Academy (first one or two only), and all those. Love Fletch too, still think it's a Top 10 comedy. It's a tough call when it comes to humor...

Oh yeah, and I'm 31, so I don't think it's an age thing.

I guess I'm an old 34.

Honestly, I barely ever watch movies except for comedies, and there have been a number of comedies I've seen over the past 10 years that were OK and I probably don't even remember watching. And then there was this one, which I only remember because of how awful it was (well, the few minutes I saw of it).

I guess, but usually I'll just think something was mediocre, rather than be unable to sit through it. Just strange that there's no explanation for it, that's all.

It is a hit and miss movie, but the bits I liked I loved.

"Who wants a moustache ride?"

The whole "meow" bit was great. The cop fapping away and trying to see how fast he is doing it, then getting pissed because he has to pull someone over. The bear...uh...fornication scene.

No explanation for what exactly? Why it was funny? I saw it a month ago and I remember that I laughed pretty much all the way through it. As for specific scenes? There were a ton of them I liked, I enjoyed the running gags as well. I thought the characters were likeable too.

I found the movie to be hilarious. It's a different brand of humor and one of those movies that you pick up something different everytime you see it. I think the first time I saw it I thought it was OK but after seeing it a few more times I think it's one of the funniest movies in recent years.

Their follow-up Club Dread was not quite as good but has it's funny moments. They also pretty much wrote the script for the Dukes of Hazzard movie and all the guys have at least a cameo as Jay Chandrasehkar (Ramathorn) was the director. Their next movie should be a good one. I think it's called Beerfest. Their first movie "Puddle Cruiser", which was a few years before Super Troopers, comes out on DVD in December.

I agree that it had parts, but I don't think the whole was that good. I'm 36, so maybe it is the age thing, but I think it was just the movie (I have friends in college who didn't think it was funny).

It's an odd sort of humor - unlike anythign I've ever seen, to be honest. I didn't think there were too many hilarious moments in either Troopers or Club Dread, but plenty of moments that were almost funnier when i imagined them coming up with the line/scene, because they were just so "What the fuck?"

i thought it was stupid the first time i saw it as well, but was subjected to additional viewings after which i grew to find it pretty funny. i also think it helps if you know police officers that you can imagine doing things like the movie characters...i found it to be much funnier after i talked to friends of mine that actually started "meow"ing at people on traffic stops.

I agree. Although I thought it was funny the first time I saw it, it got even funnier the more times I watched it. I put it in the same category as Office Space. Both have some very memorable quotes.

I liked it. I watched it before it had the buzz it seems to now, so I had zero expectations. Only watched it because it was on at the time. Had high hopes for Club Dread, but that sucked.

Super Troopers is a great movie and anyone who didn't like is a communist!

But seriously, stupid comedies are just hit or miss. You can't categorize them out or try to rationally deduct why one movie is funny and another is not. You either laugh, or you don't. I loved Super Troopers, my firends didn't. We all loved Clerks. We all loved Office Space. Some of them liked Dumb and Dumber, I thought it sucked. We all hated Dude Where's My Car. Some of us thought Billy Madison was great, others did not...

There's no reason for it other than you find it funny or you don't.

But yes, DD, you are old.

A lot of it is timing. Sometimes the mood isn't right for liking that type of movie yet see it another time you may think it's hilarious.
