Palmeiro throws teammates under the bus.. again.
Rafael Palmeiro reportedly told a three-member baseball arbitration panel that a teammate gave him a substance that might be responsible for his positive steroid test, a source told the Baltimore Sun.
A second source told the Sun that Palmeiro named the teammate when he presented his defense when appealing his suspension. However, a source told the newspaper that while he told the panel that he had received a substance from a teammate, he didn't make the case that the substance in question caused his positive test result. The House Committee on Government Reform is investigating whether Palmeiro's statements to the panel have merit, the Sun reported, by interviewing people, including members of the Orioles such as Palmeiro himself and the team's head trainer, Richie Bancells. Bancells confirmed to the newspaper that he had spoken to the committee. The baseball arbitration panel denied Palmeiro's appeal, saying he failed to establish the positive test result was not his fault. Baseball suspended Palmeiro for 10 days and the House committee is now examining arbitration hearing transcripts to determine whether Palmeiro lied to Congress when he testified he had never taken steroids. Palmeiro stood by his statements to Congress, saying he didn't know what caused the test result. Earlier this month, the Baltimore Sun reported that the House committee is uncertain whether there is enough evidence to refer the case to the Justice Department. However, the committee is considering several other options. One scenario, officials familiar with the situation told the Sun, has the committee making the documents pertaining to Palmeiro's case public. The committee received the documents related to the first baseman's positive steroid test from Major League Baseball on Aug. 12. A document release could happen in the next two weeks and would allow the public to decide for itself about Palmeiro. The documents include the results of Palmeiro's tests, the tests' dates and the record of secret proceedings before a three-member arbitration panel after Palmeiro appealed the results. The appeal was denied, and the documents would show how Palmeiro defended himself while not offering an explanation as to how the steroid entered his system. The committee has also not ruled out sending the case to the Justice Department, which could bring a perjury charge against Palmeiro. But the Sun reported that that option is less likely than others because of the difficulty of proving Palmeiro had knowingly used the drug when he appeared before Congress. Palmeiro said that he would never take a performance-enhancing substance intentionally after he tested positive for the steroid stanozolol. However, experts have said that is is unlikely stanozolol could have entered his system by accident. Palmeiro said he won't comment publicly on the matter until Congress finishes its review. A congressional source familiar with the committee's work, speaking to the AP on condition of anonymity because the investigation is ongoing, said several active players have spoken or will speak with the committee. That source would not identify who was interviewed.

I'm surprised the article didn't mention the name, since it was all over Mike & Mike this morning -- apparently, it's Rocky Biddle who has the bus tire marks all over him.

The Orioles really needed a further distraction to a horrible season. I hope Palmeiro stays far away from the team for the last few days to keep rehabbing that "knee" of his. Even if the accusation is true that someone esle gave him the drugs it still reeks of him trying to just save his own ass at this point.

And, of course, there will be a certain group of people who believe this horseshit. Thus reaffirming the cycle of "deny, deny, deny" an "lie, lie, lie" because no matter how stupid your argument or excuse -- there are those who will cling to some sliver of hope and will believe what you're saying.
Just like I concluded when Sammy Sosa (teammate of Palmeiro, I'm just sayin...) was caught red-handed using a corked bat. He claimed it was a "practice bat" that just accidentally slipped into the game bat stack without his knowledge or intent. I said ti then, and I'll say it now: You're a cheater. And now you're a liar, too. |

Craig - you're right, he is, but I swear that's who M&M named this morning. I'm trying to listen back to the tape of the segment now to see if I was hearing things or what.
edit to add: I went back & luckily found the archive of this morning's show. I guess I'm just f'n nuts, I'd have sworng I heard them say "Rocky Biddle", but all I'm hearing now is "Raffy blah blah blah". My apologies to Mr. Biddle.

I didn't think I could lose any more respect for this ass-clown after he was initially busted, but I guess I was wrong. What a loser.

I hear that it was Jay Gibbons that gave it to him.
EDIT - Biddle has never been an Oriole. Last edited by spleen1015 : 09-22-2005 at 03:24 PM. |

I admit it. I gave it to him. I sent Raffy a baseball card for him to sign.
Little did he know that I coated the card with stanozolol. So, when he did what comes naturally, and kissed his own picture, he ingested the steroid. |

If Palmeiro singlehandedly rebuilt New Orleans, that would be a decent start to improving his public image. Only a start, mind you.
I bet he gets fewer HOF votes than Steve Sax. |

Apparently he named Miguel Tejada, who said he gave him a B12 vitamin.

Here's what Tejada said:
Quote:
So, according to Raffy, Tejada gave him steroids that Miguel was already using. Tejada, who passed three separate tests, came out fine but Raffy failed. Rrrrigghht... Next, Raffy will say Tejada told him it was flax-seed oil |

"Beattie said that Palmeiro would issue a statement denying that he accused Tejada of giving him a substance that may have caused a positive test."
Does he think the so-called confidential hearing he had is going to protect him from anyone knowing the truth? At this point, he's got zero credibility, so just the fact that someone claims to be leaking "the truth" is enough for 95% of the world to not believe him. As much as McGwire disappointed me during the hearing, it's starting to look like he did the smart thing. It helped that he was retired, but Palmeiro was close enough to retirement that he should have just given the same non-answers eveyone else did.
