He sucked, so he is going to be a consultant. I guess it fits. They'll ask him what he thought they should do, and then do the opposite.

Actually, that's a bit of semantic spin. He hasn't been "hired" as a contractor/consultant, he's been switched to that role after resigning his position. I agree that that's splitting hairs, but it's not as if he left, and then they called him up to give them his "expertise".

However, the reason he's still on payroll is kind of ludicrous:

Quote:
Brown's still on the FEMA payroll; a spokesman tells CBS News he'll be there for another two weeks so the agency can get gets a "proper download of his experience."

Also:

Quote:
Former FEMA Ddirector Michael Brown says the federal government is currently paying him $148,000 per year.

A consultant to evaluate the response following Hurricane Katrina.

So, in other words, they hired Michael Brown to help determine how well Micheal Brown did his job. Wonderful.

As long as he's honest in this position, is it so bad? Basically he just needs to tell them how and why exactly the response "failed."

Well, he's in front of Congress right now testifying on that very topic. Anyone can go read/listen to what's being said right now and decide how honest he's being.

There is one thing that Brown said that was right

Quote:
FEMA is a coordinating agency. We are not a law enforcement agency FEMA is a coordinating agency. We are not a law enforcement agency

Despite all of the praises FEMA gets during the 90s, the best it has and can ever do is to be there after the fact - well after disaster strikes and is safe to go in. Then it can get supplies in and esp, provide monetary and phone help to those who need it. All this talk about making FEMA a more powerful independent agency will only give them more of our money to hand out. Not necessarily a bad thing but even if Katrina was done all over again with a better FEMA, it still wouldn't have made a difference. Calling in the NG with plenty of supplies sooner would have made the difference, not FEMA.

*sigh*

Have we learned nothing from the X-files? A stronger FEMA plays right into the aliens' hands.
