Losing the gut....it's about time for another weight lose thread.
I have a gut. It's a pretty sizable gut. Now, I'm no FAT. I'm not round. I'm not huge. I have a gut, a pretty sizable gut.
Working for my dad has done one pretty good thing. Since I'm moving and carrying heavy tanks and such a lot of the day, I've built up some good muscle mass. The problem is I still have my gut left over from when I let myself go towards the end of college and after I got home from college (read: Drank a ton of alchohol and rediscovered good food when I got home). So basically for you workout people (yes, yes, paging indoorsoccersim), I'm looking to built some kind of workout schedule that would lose the gut and build muscle tone. I'm not much for using weights. I have weights and bench down in the basement (no doubt home to several species of spiders by now), but I'd rather just do excersizes that I could simply do in my room in the morning or at night. I do have plenty of heavy computer programming books to use as supstitutes. As far as food goes, I've already started cutting way back on the suger and junk food stuff (there's a bit of a reason why I waited for a bit after Holloween. ). I am pretty sure I know what it is my body shouldn't have, but I'm not entirely sure of all of the specific stuff my body is supposed to have that would maybe help speed up the process/make it more efficient. Whould it good good if I took vitamins or something like that? So the bottom line is I want to drop the gut and tone the muscles. Any suggestions/tips/comments on working out much appreciated. do you get FitTV? if you do, I would recommend Gilad's Total Body Sculpt. it's all resistance training - different episodes feature different muscle groups, but abs get worked at every episode. other than some occasional excercises with dumbells, there's no weights, just movement.
it's not difficult, and it works - I've definitely toned up from it, although I still have a ways to go. also, he likes to use helpers that have huge knockers, so it's fun to watch. only drawback is that it's not a very aerobic workout, so you won't really lose weight doing it, just tone up. to lose weight too, you'll probably need to suplement with something that's going to burn more calories.

Yeah, in playing with their numbers, the normal range for a 6'2" weed like me begins at 144. I can't imagine that is much more than skin and bones. |

I have worked out of and on since high school. This helped keep some muscle but I added a decent amountof fat around it too. Truck driving doesn't help I guess. Anyways, if you have seen my 'I hate to run' thread I started a while back you know I started getting serious back around May or so. I am lifting and running just about every day I am home. I skip days like today when I have been up all night to get home and have not slept, but will hit it tomorrow and monday. So I get in 2-3 solid workouts a week. I also cut my diet down to 1200 calories a day for a couple of months, and try not to go over 1800 now. I have lost 50 lbs. since May. It is enough that when I had to show my drivers license (taken in April) this week the women said "gees you have lost some weight." Made me feel good, but I want to drop another 30 lbs. Anyways, I would suggest you concentrate on cardio. Run, aerobics, something like that. Do it non-stop for 30 minutes to get that fat burning. The more body fat you shed the more the belly will drop away. I do not do much in the way of ab stuff, a little during the week on the truck, but I have dropped 2 pants sizes because of mainly the running I am doing. Once you drop some of that fat, then you can concentrate more on the ab exercises to try and get them more defined. Doing crunches alone will not get rid of the gut, getting rid of the fat will. If you do not want to, or can't do, 30 minutes straight at first, then do as I did and work your way up to it. 15 minutes atleast though from what I know. You need to keep the heart rate up that long to start maximizing the fat burning.

No advice, just best wishes. Good luck Sab! I'm working on losing the last 20lbs of baby weight (already lost 25), and tightening up my core. It's tough. I'm not disciplined enough to do this on my own, so I've hired a personal trainer to kick my butt around the gym three times a week.

Also if you can't run do some cardio by stationary bike. That should start off with the burn (though about 100-200 cal less than running) and, after you get used to it RUN.

This is the key. You can do 500 crunches a day, but you won't lose the gut without cardio. Start off with 90 minutes a week (three 30 minutes sessions) and work your way to about 200 minutes (five 40 minute sessions).

I agree that Cardio is the way to go. It burns the fat. The other part of the process is eating smart.
I am 34 and my body just doesn't like running anymore..in fact I find it impossible to stick to it. What has worked for me, (and right now I'm trying to drop 20-30lbs.) is SPINNING classes. Bascally you get on a stationary cycle in a classroom atmosphere and work lke you've never worked before. The good thing is you will be less lkely to give up since you are in a grop enviroment. The other benefit is that the instructor will make sure you are working hard. Classes last anywhere from 45min to 1 hr. As far as eating...small meals 2-3 times a day, lots of fruits and veggies, chicken fish, soups and salad. Also drink lots of water. if you folow my advice, I guarantee the gut will be gone in 3-5 months (depending on how big it is) In fact, I'll do it with you. We can come on here daily and report our progress. Let me know. |

Doing 500 crunches a day will get your heart pounding and the sweat pouring. And, that my friends IS CARDIO. If you do not want to go to the gym, or buy some useless piece of equipment that you will use for a clothes hanger; Get yourself a step counter and start walking, and walking, and walking. They all come with a little program for increasing you steps per day and it is the simplest way out there to lose weight. |

If you're dead serious about doing this, I'd recommend picking up a copy of "body for life" by bill phillips. It's a lifestyle altering 84 day program which combines nutrition with exercise. The diet was the toughest part of the challenge, but i lasted about 50 days on it before reverting to my old ways. For instance, you had to eat 6 times a day and nothing past 6pm, while limiting your carb intake at each meal. I dropped from 221 down to 213 by the time i quit, so i figure it would've been about 20 pounds overall if i had chosen to stick with it. The fat loss by itself would've been close to 30 pounds probably.
Here's some before&after pictures of people who have completed the whole 12 weeks: http://www.bodyforlife.com/success/b...fterAfters.asp |

It's a triangle of diet, exercise, and sleep. So find the right balance and you're set. I would say exercise is the most important from personal experience, e.g. if you work out enough, you can eat whatever you want. The best way I've found to stay in shape is to play a sport that requires a lot of running.

Doesnt really work that way in practical application. I forgot the study, but I think you would have to do 100 crunches a day for 7 years to lose ONE pound of body fat. You need to do Cardio for at least 30 minutes to really get results. Personally, I am a big guy and I like being a big guy, I lift weights and do interval cardio training as it goes along well with lifting. Of course right now Im not doing anything until my ankle gets better. |

Thanks for all of the advise guys. I'll be looking into getting an excersize bike or a treadmill (hopefully both at some point) soon. Are there any brands I should avoid/look for? Figure like with most things, there are the good brands and the crappy ones. Also, space is a concearn so ones the could possible fold up would be good too. Thanks.

Take it for what it's worth, but I'm currently on Atkins Phase 1 and I've lost 5 lbs. in 1 week. Some call it a fad diet, but I've been able to lose 20 lbs. and keep it off. Just eliminate all the bad carbs like white flour and sugar.
If you or anyone else is interested, PM me and I'll give ya some info. If I can do it, I've no doubt ANYONE can. |
