2002 RECRUITMENT
Code:
$$ - likely interest. ## - almost certain interest. ** - bit of a stretch One of these recruits was destined to enter the Notre Dame Hall of Fame in years to come. Can you guess which one? It’s not obvious from these figures.

Small but steady improvements in our figures this year. Unfortunately, our opponents have improved more. As last year we’re much better at running than at passing, though with pretty low yards per carry.

CHALLENGE DYNASTY - IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF ROCKNE 2003
Reminder: Initial Settings: Everything on manual - in practice, I rely heavily on the coordinators’ recommendations for team selection and game plan. Last Season Results were 4-7 (up from 3-8 last season). Literally that - a run of 4 wins then a run of 7 losses. Overall rank 88. The College The one and only Notre Dame Academic reputation now averages 52 (up from 53), which puts us 54 of 125 (up from 68). Subject rankings still range wildly from 28 (Art and Geography) to 82 (of 125) (Dentistry) and 93 (Latin). Remember there are three subjects we don’t offer: Sociology, Social Work and Political Science. Undergraduate GPA is up to 2.83 (from 2.69). This is improving. Community loyalty: Very Good (was Terrific) Alumni loyalty: Decent Student goodwill: Pretty Good (was Very Good) It shows in the fall in season tickets sold (only 41,600). We have to get back to winning games. Prestige is down to 71 (from 75). At the start of the season we’re up to 72 in the coaches’ poll, 57 in the fans’ poll and ranked 66 overall. Must do better. Ticket Prices This is not a time to raise prices. Start of Season e-mails. Leo Spear, a center, has left your team because of a lack of playing time. He had no playing time because he had no endurance. Martin Blackburn, an outside linebacker, has left your team because of poor grades this year. He was a walk-on without much to him. We’ll live. J.T. Moore, an inside linebacker, has been made academically ineligible for the upcoming season for failing a class. That’s bad news. He’s a bright lad, but flunked Economics. Rich Nixon, an outside linebacker, has been made academically ineligible for the upcoming season for failing a class. Randal Stone, a punter, has been made academically ineligible for the upcoming season for failing a class. Randal Stone, a punter, has made a request to be allowed more free time for the upcoming season. They were both pretty useless walk-ons. Young Stone can have all the free time he wants. All he needs to do is walk off again. Wally Foley of Michigan has been named Coach of the Year for his performance this past season. Second season running. The good news is what isn’t there: No staff changes. No broken relationships (well, this is a Catholic college). And the word on campus is that nine of the squad who had no girlfriends at the end of last season now do. Those love potions are working!

Most of them look to have less potential than was hoped. The big surprise, if we can develop him, is QB Boston. G Fisk is the only out-and-out bust but he was mainly recruited for his GPA of 4.00 anyway. [Historical note - can you spot the one who will one day enter the Notre Dame Hall of Fame yet?]

2003 ROSTER
Scout McLendon can now make direct comparisons with last year. Code:
We’ve lost Harvey, but Sheldon saw more gameplay last year, and had better stats. Tough decision about Boston: do we play him for experience, or try to de facto redshirt him? Code:
We’ve lost RB Weems, but Morris had better stats last year and has developed well, as has Drake. Will gamble on Drake developing more by red-shirting him. Down to two FB and they’re not up to much. Fortunately, other positions can fill in. Code:
Giving Chandler the nod over Cooksey last season has worked well so far as his development is concerned. Everett is the best we have, in his final year. Preston won’t see much action, if I can help it. A lot of WR but nothing spectacular, and disappointingly little improvement. Should be able to redshirt both Quinn and Tharp, and see who develops best. Code:
C Fleming, has developed well, and bulked up a little more too (up from 291 pounds to 295 pounds). Fields is all endurance and no skill and he’s not improved any. It’s change for the G with Broughton and Shields both gone. Stickney is still around and up to 300 pounds; we’ll be in trouble when he goes. We managed to redshirt Shelton last season and he’s come on well from a very low base (a year on the weights has brought him up to 311 pounds). Fulcher is better, but lighter (278 pounds). Fisk won’t see any playing time even if the earth swallows up the rest of the OL; Caldwell will sit on the bench on match days and press it the rest of the week. "Mighty Mouse" Verdin is now up to 268 pounds and the best of some pretty weak T. Code:
With Stone on academic probation (and pretty useless) Spatz is the obvious first choice P. Try to redshirt Schneider for next year. Omar has improved massively and must start as K. McGarrahan will redshirt. Code:
These drops in ability are generally alarming. McCarthy and Judkins were the best DE last year, but only had one sack between the two of them. Hutchins had six sacks all on his own. It’s a hard choice. DT Fowler’s fall is particularly alarming, but he and Metzler will have to be first choice. Code:
Keeton has improved massively, which is just as well. Moore screwed up massively last year and is on academic probation, Zedalis is a bit of a tadpole (asp 80 int 76) while walk-on Kelley can just about stand up and chew gum at the same time (asp 9 int 29). OLB will have to fill in - but below Griggs and Nails (another whose motor skills are impeded by chewing gum - asp 70; int 20) there’s not much talent - and Griggs will be out for most of the season with a long term injury from last year. Nixon is on academic probation. Will try to red-shirt Ciszek. Code:
The loss of our best CB last year, Finley, is hard. Price and Meija will have to cope as best they can. Last year I said there was no chance of developing Burgess with his int. of zero and I was not wrong! The development of S Hampton and Lundy looks a lot better. Maumau could develop coming off the bench. Norris and Budd may end up as de facto redshirts. # non-scholarship walk-on ~ fifth-year senior * has been red-shirted Offensive Set: Wishbone Formation. Defensive Set: Variable, depending on the opposition. One more thing:Keep Practice at 25.

Gaps to be filled: upcoming Class of 2003
One QB Two RB Two TE One W One C Two G Three DE One OLB One CB Recruitment Priorities Filling the upcoming gaps with the best talent we can get. For the spare spaces, try for LB and S. Recruitment Tactics We need to keep the academics rising. Firstly, go for those of the nation’s top players who may be interested - probably around the lower half of the top 1,000. Secondly, look for talent in and around Indiana. Thirdly, look for clever players needing a sports scholarship.

2003 Week 1
We have a full schedule, with the returns of last year’s warm-up games against Duke and the Army. Recruiting All regional scouts are asked to identify the most likely prospects in the nation’s top 100 (in game terms, the green-coded ones). They come up with seven, most of whom are in positions we need. After setting aside one who idolizes UCLA and another with a test score of 989, there are five: In Anchorage, Alaska DE Jamie McInturff (96, Dist/Acad Nat Rank #2). Well, everywhere is a long way from Alaska. In Sulphur, Louisiana WR Craig Ramsey (82, Dist/Acad Nat Rank #25). In Salt Lake City, Utah C Kendrick Ochoa (82, Dist*/Acad Nat Rank #37 6’6" and 300 pounds). In Alanson, Michigan RB Derrick Mickens (73+, Acad/(Dist) Nat Rank #52). In Saint Agatha, Maine T Marshall Surtain (85, Acad/Dist Nat Rank #85). Invite them all to visit - they all play it cool - and offer them all scholarships. Then seek out QB. After some calls and visits main targets are Bobby Cucina from Ohio (96 - -but nevertheless Nat Rank #22 Dist/Acad) and Al Roe from Illinois (60+ Acad/Prest Nat Rank #832). Backups Roosevelt Reed from Illinois (55- Acad/Prest Nat Rank #440 and a High School teammate on the roster) and Jay Contreras from Indiana (47+ Dist/Prest Nat Rank #616). Invite all to visit - they also play it cool - and offer scholarships to the two main targets. No game this week. On TV1 Texas Tech go down 6-38 at #7 Indiana. On TV2 Northern Illinois lose 16-31 at #39 Eastern Carolina.

2003 Week 2
Recruitment Check who the rivals are for our main targets. None for QBs Cucina and Roe, WR Ramsay, C Ochoa, or DE McInturff. Call them again anyway. RB Mickens has four other offers, all of whom outrank us (he’s strongly considering Stanford, the furthest away). T Surtain has two other offers and interest from Georgia Tech, who outrank us. He’s strongly considering Oaklahoma. Look for alternative RB. There’s some good prospects in the Deep South (combined with an opportunity to visit WR Ramsey, who turns out to be 82- ). May have chances with Vernon Fordham of Louisiana (49+ Prest/Acad Nat Rank #994 rival interest from Hawaii whom we’re roughly equal to) and Lewis Macon of Texas (also 49+ Acad/Prest no rival interest). Invite both to visit. Offer Fordham a scholarship. In Louisiana also visit TE Jim Overby (39+ Acad/Prest no rival interest). Returning through Tennessee visit Luther Joseph (79+ Acad/Dist Nat Rank #590 rival interest from Connecticut whom we outrank) and Cole Gillespie (51+ Prest/Dist rival interest from North Carolina State whom we outrank). Invite all three to visit. Offer scholarship to Joseph and Gillespie. The Match Away at the Army. Last week they lost 7-49 at #3 UCLA. Last year we took them 41-11. They prefer the Pro Formation and their main QB specializes in long passing. New gameplan for a new year. Starting QB Sheldon, first backup Crossman. RB Morris/Levine/Holmes. FB Jackson/Meadows/Chandler. Meier at Flanker, Robb at Split End. OL is vunerable at the ends: LT Verdin, LG Stickney, C Fleming, RG Fulcher, LT freshman Herndon. 4-3 defence; starting CB Mejia and Price. Rain, 67 degrees. The only score in the first quarter is a field goal from Long. In the second the quarter the Army score two touchdowns, to lead 14-3. There’s no score in the third quarter. In the first minute of the fourth quarter TE Everett scores a touchdown, and with seven minutes to go RB Levine scores another. 18-14 to Notre Dame. The end of the game approaches … Possession to Army. 1-10-ARMY46 (04:16) ARMY 28 Bronson ran around right end for 21 yards. Tackled by NDAM 99 Pfingsten, assisted by NDAM 97 Judkins. Key block delivered by ARMY 72 Porter. -- 1-10-NDAM33 (03:42) ARMY 11 Severide pass completed to 5 Nutile for 6 yards. Tackled by NDAM 39 Maumau. 2-04-NDAM27 (03:07) ARMY 39 Schroeder ran off left guard for 16 yards. Tackled by NDAM 92 McCarthy. Key block delivered by ARMY 71 Appleton. -- 1-10-NDAM11 (02:29) ARMY 28 Bronson ran off right guard for 0 yards. Tackled by NDAM 99 Pfingsten, assisted by NDAM 94 Keeton. 2-10-NDAM11 (02:09) ARMY 11 Severide pass completed to 84 Scott for 11 yards and a touchdown! Extra point by ARMY 19 Marino was good. Score: Army 21, Notre Dame 18. ARMY 19 Marino kicked off 65 yards from the ARMY35. NDAM 85 Meier returned the ball 13 yards to the NDAM13. Tackled by ARMY 42 Moss. Possession to Notre Dame. 1-10-NDAM13 (01:52) NDAM 4 Sheldon pass fell incomplete, intended for 35 Levine. ARMY 79 Stuart hurried the quarterback into a bad throw. 2-10-NDAM13 (01:43) NDAM 4 Sheldon sacked by ARMY 37 Finn for a loss of 6 yards. Sack allowed by NDAM 59 Fleming. 3-16-NDAM07 (01:19) NDAM 4 Sheldon pass fell incomplete, intended for 47 Morris. ARMY 34 Chiang defended the pass. 4-16-NDAM07 (01:11) NDAM 4 Sheldon pass fell incomplete, intended for 85 Meier. ARMY 43 Hammond hurried the quarterback into a bad throw. The ball goes over on downs. Possession to Army. 1-07-NDAM07 (01:05) ARMY 11 Severide pass completed to 84 Scott for 7 yards and a touchdown! Extra point by ARMY 19 Marino was good. NDAM 99 Pfingsten was injured on the play. Score: Army 28, Notre Dame 18. And so it ended. Lose 18-28 How? How? The scores in the fourth quarter suggest both teams lack depth. We outran them by 152 net yards to 94 but they outpassed us better, by 204 net yards to 130. Nevertheless, we won 20 first downs to their 15. Nearest thing to a killer stat is sacks. We conceded three losing 21 yards, they conceded none. They reached our red zone four times (for three touchdowns), we only reached theirs twice (for two). QB Sheldon was sacked three times and rushed twelve yards net. 14 of 27 passes reached the hands of the intended player, two of which were dropped. RB Morris caught four and dropped one of ten, WR Meier three of six and TE Everett three of four (dropping the other one). RB Morris ran 86 yards, RB Levine 54. No sacks, but OLB "hard as" Nails made six tackles (two for loss) followed by OLB McWilliams with five one FL) then DT Fowler and ILB Keeton with three each (one each FL). RB Morris makes the Players of the Week list. On TV1 #21 Iowa lose 14-27 at #27 Virginia On TV2 #11 Purdue win 7-6 at #2 Indiana. Injuries T Verdin - probable - concussion - 6 weeks DT Pfingsten - probable - bruised sternum - 5 weeks WR Worthington - probable - flu - 1 week Walking wounded OLB Griggs - out - ACL damage to the knee (from last season) - 11 weeks

2003 Week 3
Recruiting Review existing contacts: QB Cucina strongly considering (and visiting) Ohio State who outrank us on both his priorities. Withdraw offer from him. Still no other interest in backup Roe (what do the other coaches know that we don’t ?). Make another offer to Reed (who is strongly considering Northern Illinois, but we outrank them). RB Mickens now visiting Stanford. Withdraw offer from him. Concentrate on backup Fordham. He’s strongly considering Texas Tech, but they haven’t made him an offer. TE Joseph is strongly considering North Carolina, who outrank us but have not made an offer. Backup Gillespie don’t say much. WR Ransay strongly considering (and visiting) Texas, who outrank us on distance. C Ochoa strongly considering Penn State; we outrank them on distance, they outrank us on academics. T Surtain now strongly considering Georgia Tech. DE McInturff now considering Oklahoma State, but we outrank them. It’s time to fight for some of these. First to Utah, to visit C Ochoa (who turns out to be 82+) twice. While there call on and visit backup G Andrew Bean (32+ Acad/Prest and already 307 pounds) and backup C Daniel Crockett (28+ Prest*/Dist and already 278 pounds). No rival interest. Invite both to visit. Offer scholarship to Bean. Then to Colorado to visit G Bo Benson (21+ Dist/Acad already 312 pounds), CB Gino Gardner (28+ Prest/Dist unhappy (!) to see a HS teammate on the roster). No rival interest. Invite both to visit. The Match Hosting Duke. We are five point favourites, and out for blood after last week. Watson replaces Verdin at LT. Otherwise, same team and formations as last week. Sunny, 76 degrees and a crowd of 45,900. When the only score in the first quarter is a touchdown for Duke, the crowd begin to doubt. Oh, ye of little faith! Win 37-13. Perhaps the best sign is our running up 21 of the 37 points in the fourth quarter. Touchdowns from RB Morris (x2) and RB Holmes; touchdowns from interceptions from DE Porter and freshman backup S Maumau. We outran them by 186 net yards to 78, they outpassed up by 212 net yards to 147 and we won 26 first downs to their 22. Killer stat is tackles for loss - they had none. Simple as that! And they gave away ten penalties to our five. QB Sheldon was not sacked and rushed 39 yards. 13 of 24 passes were successful. Leading runner by far was RB Morris with 121 yards. Next was Sheldon with his 39, then QB Holmes with 14. RB Meier caught four of seven passes, RB Morris four of six and TE Everett three of five. Leading the defense were CB Price with eight tackles and OLB Nails with seven. RB Morris is the games MVP and makes the Players of the Week list with QB Sheldon. On TV1 #39 Indiana upset #1 Michigan 24-14 at Michigan. On TV2 #24 Arizona State go 3-0 with a 20-17 win at #33 Oaklahoma State. Out for the season RB Levine - torn triceps muscle New injuries ILB Keeton - questionable - torn thumb ligament - 5 weeks DE McCarthy - probable - broken finger - 2 weeks Walking wounded OLB Griggs - out - ACL damage to knee - 10 weeks T Verdin - probable - concussion - 5 weeks DT Pfingsten - probable - bruised sternum - 4 weeks

2003 Week 4
Messages Al Meier, a wide receiver, expressed the opinion that he should receive a full scholarship given his current level of playing time. Agreed. He’s a senior in his last season and will be a starter. Recruitment Nobody visiting us yet. QB Reed & Roe - no changes. RB Fordham - no change. TE Joseph & Gillispie - no changes. WR Ramsey now visiting Texas. Offer scholarship to backup Grodin. He’s strongly considering Michigan State, but it’s worth a try. T Ochoa strongly considering Texas - High School coach warns us off. G Bean - no rival interest. T Surtain - strongly considering Georgia Tech. DE McInturff now strongly considering Florida. Visit some local defencemen. Best prospects we may have a chance with are: ILB: Jose Hines (49++ #2 ILB in Kentucky Acad/Dist much rival interest) worth a try. Offer a scholarship. OLB Deon Garcia (43+ Dist*/Prest #1 OLB in Tennessee rival interest from Oakland but we outrank them). Offer a scholarship. Longshot CB Mario Mascorella (53+ Prest*/Dist #1 CB in Tennessee Nat Rank #806 rival interest from Air Force who have more prestige and Middle Tennessee who are closer). Offer him a scholarship. S (to make up the age balance) Lenny Schwartz (34+ Acad*/Prest #5 S in Indiana no rival interest). Offer him a scholarship. The Match Hosting North Carolina State. Their record is also 1-1. They’re coming off a 49-10 defeat at Florida. They prefer the Wing-T. Both their main QB like to run all the time. We revert to a 4-6 defence. G Shelton moves to LT. Hutchins comes in at LE for the injured McCarthy (what a fuss about a broken finger - it’s not as if he needed it to write with (int. 7)). Fair, 52 degrees. Crowd of 46,800. It’s close. Notre Dame are ahead 9-0 after the first quarter, but NCST score two touchdowns in the second quarter to Notre’s Dame’s one, to make it 15-14 to Notre Dame at the break. Another touchdown for each side, with NCST failing to convert, makes it 22-20 to Notre Dame at the end of the third quarter. NCST score a touchdown and convert five minutes into the fourth quarter, and it’s not until the last two minutes that RB Morris runs one to pull back the lead. Thirty seconds later S Lundy makes and interception and sets off for a 92-yard breakaway run. The crown cheer out the last minute and long after the game. Win 35-27 Touchdowns from WR Meier, FB Jackson, WR Robb, RB Morris and that massive interception from Lundy. We outrushed them by 191 net yards to 170 and outpassed them by 164 net yards to 68 (9.6 yerds per attempt to their 3.0), winning 19 first downs to their 11. Amazingly, they only made one visit to our red zone, with all their other scores being run or passed from outside. Sheldon was sacked once in seven rushes for 25 net yards and succeeded with 12 of 17 pass attempts - by far his best passing ratio this season. RB Morris rushed 95 yards, RB Holmes 46. WR Meier was star catcher with four of four, followed by RB Holmes with three of four and TE Everett with two of three. Main actors in the defense were DE Porter and OLB Nails with seven tackles each (one each for loss), CB Price with seven (and none) and DT Fowler with six (and none). QB Shelton and RBs Morris and Holmes make the Players of the Week list. On TV1 #2 Nebraska maintain a 3-0 record by a 48-3 win at #8 Virginia Tech. On TV2 Bowling Green are the cupcakes in a 14-55 defeat at #1 Oklahoma. No new injuries Out for the season RB Levine - torn triceps muscle Walking wounded OLB Griggs - questionable - ACL damage to knee - 9 weeks ILB Keeton - questionable - torn thumb ligament - 4 weeks T Verdin - probable - concussion - 4 weeks DT Pfingsten - probable - bruised sternum - 3 weeks DE McCarthy - probable - broken finger - 1 week.

2003 Week 5
Academics Grades are out. Only one player has a D (G Herndon), nine others are on D+. Herndon gets 8 time blocks, the others three each (leaves 20). Recruitment OLB Garcia and S Schwartz are visiting. As they’re both from Indiana, they’re both visited. WR Ramsey now visiting both Texas and Tulane. T Surtain now visiting Georgia Tech. ILB Hines now visiting Kentucky. None of our other targets are visiting other colleges yet. Then off to Alaska to visit DE McInturff. He’s strongly considering Florida and probably won’t consider Notre Dame. But he’s not visiting them yet. Other prospects from the frozen north are CB Teddy Bernstein (51+ Dist/Acad idolizes Washington, but they’re not interested) and RB Brenden McConnell (36+ Prest*/Acad no rival interest). Invite both to visit. Both will probably accept. Offer both scholarships. The Match At #39 Michigan State. We go into the year’s first game in the Big Ten with a 2-1 record. But it won’t be easy. They beat us 31-10 in 2001 and 24-17 in 2002 They prefer the Pro Formation. Their senior QB is injured. Might as well stick with last week’s team and formation. Sunny, 68 degrees. Oh dear. Lose 3-31 The only fig leaf to cover our shame is a field goal from Long. We are outrushed by 171 net yards to 158 and outpassed much more seriously, by 187 net yards to 86. They win exactly twice as many first downs as us: 20 to 10. Sheldon is sacked four times in eight attempts for minus eighteen yards, and only succeeds with eight of 26 pass attempts. RB Holmes rushes 82 yards, RB Morris 47 and backup freshman RB Francis 39. P Spatz punts twelve times for an average 37.9 yards, three of them falling within the opponents’ 20, but we can’t do anything with them. Leading tackles: DE Porter with nine, DE Judkins with seven (and our one sack), OLB McWilliams with six and DT Fowler and S Hampton with five each. Despite this RB Holmes makes the Players of the Week list. On TV1 #5 Georgia Tech’s unbeaten record ends with a 20-23 defeat at #26 North Carolina. On TV2 #11 Southern Mississippi make heavy weather of a 31-28 win at unranked Lousiville. . No new injuries Out for the season RB Levine - torn triceps muscle Walking wounded OLB Griggs - questionable - ACL damage to knee - 8 weeks ILB Keeton - questionable - torn thumb ligament - 3 weeks T Verdin - probable - concussion - 3 weeks DT Pfingsten - probable - bruised sternum - 2 weeks

Recruitment No additional visitors. None of our main targets are visiting anyone else yet. Looking out for backup RB in case McInturff does go to Florida; visit and make offers to Chuck Necaise from Illinois (46++ Acad/Prest Nat Rank #515) and Marc Matthews from Ohio (44++ Acad/Prest Nat Rank #613). Both have offers from other colleges which outrank us, but there’s always a chance. The Match Hosting Wisconsin. They are 3-0 (we are now 2-2) and 13-point favourites. They prefer the Power-I formation and their starting QB is best at very long passes. Back to a 4-3 defence Rain, 62 degrees. The crowd of 47,400 see a good start, as a Wisconsin field goal in the middle of the first quarter is overtaken by a touchdown from RB Holmes towards the end. They are head to one touchdown in the second quarter and one field goal in the third, but it all falls apart in the fourth. Lose 7-33 Although we outrush them by 181 net yards to 153, they outpass us by 205 net yards to 39 (12.0 yards per attempt to our 3.2) and win 22 first downs to our 10. They beat a path to our red zone with six visits (for four touchdowns and two field goals) which we briefly encounter theirs once. QB Sheldon was sacked twice in eight rushes to make a grand total of eleven yards. Only four of his twelve pass attempts succeeded. RB Holmes rushed 62 yards, RB Morris 49 and junior FB Meadows 35. Holding back the flood were DT Fowler with eight tackles (two for loss) and 1.5 sacks and OLB McWilliams with eight (one for) and one, followed by DE Porter with six tackles. RB Holmes and DT Fowler make the players of the Week list. On TV1 #14 Mississippi State go 5-0 with a 42-34 win at #5 Florida On TV2 #12 Tennessee go 4-0 with a 19-10 win at #17 Auburn. No new injuries I might take some, in return for some victories in the Big Ten. Out for the season RB Levine - torn triceps muscle Walking wounded OLB Griggs - questionable - ACL damage to knee - 7 weeks ILB Keeton - probable - torn thumb ligament - 2 weeks T Verdin - probable - concussion - 2 weeks DT Pfingsten - probable - bruised sternum - 1 week

2003 Week 7
Recruitment Bad news: Jose Hines, an inside linebacker, has decided not to accept your offer and will attend Kentucky next season. Good News: RB McConnell is also visiting. DE McIntuff is visiting Florida and Stanford, both of which massivly outrank us on academics. He’s gone. WR Ramsay now visiting Indiana and Louisiana State. Ditto. C Ochoa now vising Utah. Ditto. Call up or visit all our other top prospects. No game this week. On TV1 #4 Michigan win 29-20 at #16 Purdue. On TV2 #9 Colorado win 14-10 at #49 Iowa State.

2003 Week 8
Recruitment Mario Mascorella, a cornerback from Wooddale High School in Memphis, Tennessee, has accepted your invitation to play for your school next season. He’s 53+ Nat Rank #806. Britt Grodin, a wide receiver, has decided not to accept your offer and will attend Michigan State next season. Suddenly we have masses of visitors: QB Roe and Reed, RB Macon and McConnell, TE Luther and Gillespie, G Bean, DE Matthews, OLB Garcia, CB Bernstein and S Schwartz. Most of them are visiting elsewhere too. Visit those within range, call the others and call the other prospects who aren’t visiting us yet. The Match Away to Penn State. They’re #40 and also 2-3. They prefer the Pro Formation and their senior QB is best at very long passes. No change to the team or the tactics. When all else fails, try continuity. Rain, 61 degrees. Shut out 0-45 So much for continuity. Just for a change, most of the damage was done in the second quarter, when they scored 21 of their 45 points. We are outrushed by 195 net yards to 136 and outpassed by a massive 284 net yards to 79 (8.6 net yards to 2.5); they win 26 first downs to our seven. QB Sheldon was sacked once in two rushes for minus five yards; QB Crossman and QB Boston made one successful rush each for plus one and minus one yard respectively. Five of Sheldon’s 25 passing attempts succeeded, one of Boston’s four and neither of Crossman’s two. RB Francis rushed 62 yards, RB Morris 42 and RB Holmes 30. In the front line facing the music were OLB McWilliams with eight tackles, DE Porter with seven (two for loss), S Hampton also with seven (one for loss) and DT Fowler with six (three for loss). So it could have been (even) worse. Nobody from Notre Dame makes the Players of the Week list. Now, there’s a surprise! On TV1 Oklahoma establish a 6-0 streak with a 35-21 win over visitors #7 Texas. On TV2 #11 Nevada-Las Vegas win 33-28 at #20 Brigham Young. Out for the season RB Levine - torn triceps muscle G Shelton - probable - shoulder tendonitis (new) Walking wounded OLB Griggs - probable - ACL damage to knee - 5 weeks T Verdin - probable - concussion - 1 week

2003 Week 9
Academic More grades are out. One has a lowest D- (walk-on S Budd), three with D four with D+. 5 time blocks for Budd. Keep the others in reserve for now. Recruitment Roosevelt Reed, a quarterback from Saint Charles High School in Saint Charles, Illinois, has accepted your invitation to play for your school next season. He’s 55- Nat Rank 440. Lewis Macon, a running back, has decided not to accept your offer and will attend Houston next season. Andrew Bean, an offensive guard, has decided not to accept your offer and will attend New Mexico next season. Jessie Sherman, a safety, has decided not to accept your offer and will attend Boston College next season. Last week’s visitors have been joined by RB Fordham, C Ochoa and DE Necaise. As before, visit those within range, call the others. The big gap now is G. Make offer to backup Bo Benson (21+ 312 pounds no rival interest). Look up some similar-sized further backups. All come from High Schools with sports ratings of 80+. The Match Hosting Northwestern. They are 3-3, #46 and 6-point favourites. They prefer the double-wing and their starting QB likes to run. Fields comes in for the injured Shelton at LT. Try a 4-6 defence. Rain, 50 degrees. Crowd of 45,400. Lose 18-31 It’s all over by halfway; the only score in the first quarter is a touchdown by RB Holmes, but in the second quarter NWST run up 21 points and we only manage one field goal. RB Meier makes our other touchdown, at the start of the fourth quarter. They outrush us by 195 net yards to 138 and we outpass them by 169 net yards to 132. They win 18 first downs to our 15. But they achieve three sacks to our one, and force three fumbles to our none. QB Sheldon was sacked three times in seven rushes for minus 25 yards(!!!) and succeeded with ten passes in twenty attempts. RB Morris ran 98 yards, RB Holmes 54. P Spatz excelled himself with an average of 42.8 yards per punt (6 for 257 yards in all), two landing within the opponents’ twenty. Once again, we could not do anything with them. TE Everett caught three of seven passes headed in his general direction, WR Meier three of five (one dropped) and RB Morris two of four. Leading the defense were DE Porter with twelve tackles (one for loss) and DT Fowler with ten (one for loss), followed by OLB McWilliams with seven (two for loss) and ILB Keeton with six. The one sack was by DE McCarthy. Once again, RBs Morris and Holmes make the Players of the Week list. On TV1 #5 Stanford extend their run to 7-0 with a 35-27 home win against #26 Southern California On TV2 #25 Maryland are shut out 0-25 at #10 North Carolina. Out for rest of the season RB Levine - torn triceps muscle G Stickney - dislocated elbow (new) RB Francis - broken clavicle (new) G Shelton - shoulder tendonitis Now when I said I might take some injuries in return for some wins … I didn’t mean it … and where are the wins? Walking wounded OLB Griggs - probable - ACL damage to knee - 4 weeks ILB Keeton - probable - bruised ribcage - 3 weeks (new)

2003 Week 10
Recruitment No good news: Clyde Bradford, a quarterback, has decided not to accept your offer and will attend Illinois next season. Kendrick Ochoa, a center, has decided not to accept your offer and will attend Utah next season. Marc Matthews, a defensive end, has decided not to accept your offer and will attend West Virginia next season. Teddy Bernstein, a cornerback, has decided not to accept your offer and will attend North Carolina State next season. Nine visitors now, all of whom we call. Make fresh offer to G Brady Godfrey (25+ 306 pounds no rival interest). The Match Hosting Ohio State. Like us, they are unranked and 2-5. Also like us, they run the wishbone. We only have two fit RB. WR Renaldo Robb will convert for the rest of his final season. In turn, Alson comes in as Split End. Other injuries mean Verdin returns as LT with Fields moving to LG. Rain, 37 degrees. Crowd down to 43,300. Lose 9-40 The only events to cheer the crowd are a field goal in the first quarter and an interception followed by a 58-yard run for a touchdown by FB Jackson three minutes from the end of the third quarter. Otherwise we are thrashed: outrushed by 209 net yards to 137, outpassed by 271 net yards (15.9 per attempt) to 144 (4.9 per attempt), and they win 24 first downs to our eleven. The measure of our failure is that we make three visits to their red zone, and all we gain is one lousy field goal. QB Sheldon has a nightmare, sacked four times in eight attempts for minus twenty yards and successful in only nine passes from 28 attempts. RB Morris does nearly all the running with 117 yards (next is RB Holmes with 21). Leaders of the defense were DT Fowler with nine tackles (two for loss), DE McCarthy with eight (four for loss) and one sack, OLB Nails with eight tackles (two for loss), OLB McWilliams with seven (two for loss) and DE Porter also with seven (two for loss) - so, as you see, the score could have gone out of sight! RB Morris finds his way into the Players of the Week list. DE McCarthy should have been there too. On TV1 #4 Stanford are beaten 18-48 at #16 UCLA On TV2 #32 Air Force are shot down 14-48 at 8-0 #2 Wisconsin. Out for rest of the season RB Levine - torn triceps muscle G Stickney - dislocated elbow RB Francis - broken clavicle G Shelton - shoulder tendonitis Walking wounded TE Chandler - questionable - deep thigh bruise - 3 weeks OLB Griggs - probable - ACL damage to knee - 3 weeks ILB Keeton - probable - bruised ribcage - 2 weeks

2003 Week 11
Recruitment More bad news Al Roe, a quarterback, has decided not to accept your offer and will attend Northern Illinois next season. Vernon Fordham, a running back, has decided not to accept your offer and will attend Cincinnati next season. Riddick Banks, a defensive end, has decided not to accept your offer and will attend Louisiana Tech next season. Now there are eight visitors for twelve unfilled places. This would be a good time to panic. Make backup offers to QBs Kevin Chin (78+ poor HS) and Adam Brook (60- poor HS), WR Bill Complow (45+) and OLB Carl Edwards (54+). All are visiting elsewhere too. Also C Daniel Crockett (28+ no rival interest) and CB Gino Gardner (28+ also no rival interest). The Match At Illinois. Their record is 4-4, ours 2-6. They are 20-point favourites. At this stage of the season, nothing would surprise me. They like to run the I-formation. The alumni are screaming blue murder. I follow the scouts’ recommendations to the letter. If we go down, we’ll all go down together. Fair, 64 degrees. Lose 14-40 At the halfway point it’s 14-17, with touchdowns for QB Sheldon and RB Morris in the second quarter, but we don’t score again. While we outrush them by 175 net yards to 109, they outpass us by 332 yards to 115. They win 25 first downs to our 17. They visit our red zone six times, for (only) two touchdowns and four field goals; we visit theirs twice for the two touchdowns. The run of losses is getting to the team - we give away twelve penalties to their six. QB Sheldon is sacked only three times in fifteen rushes but only makes 25 yards (and the touchdown!). He makes eight successful passes in seventeen attempts. Again, RB Morris is out on his own with 106 yards; next is converted RB Robb with 29. Holding the defense together is ILB Keeton with eleven tackles; next are not-quite-fit OLB Griggs and OLB Nails with six each. One of each of these players’ tackles was for loss. RB Morris runs into the Players of the Week list. On TV1 #19 Virginia Tech are blown away 3-45 by #1 Miami of Florida On TV2 #11 Texas win a thrilling game 40-34 at #28 Colorado. Out for rest of the season RB Levine - torn triceps muscle RB Holmes - stretched knee ligament (new) G Stickney - dislocated elbow RB Francis - broken clavicle TE Thurman - torn thumb ligament G Shelton - shoulder tendonitis Walking wounded TE Chandler - questionable - deep thigh bruise - 2 weeks OLB Griggs - probable - ACL damage to knee - 2 weeks ILB Keeton - probable - bruised ribcage - 1 weeks

2003 Week 12
Messages Skip Mejia, a cornerback, expressed the opinion that he should receive a full scholarship given his current level of playing time. This is his last year, and he’s been a regular starter this season. Let him have it. Recruitment Bo Benson, an offensive guard from Rocky Mountain High School in Fort Collins, Colorado, has accepted your invitation to play for your school next season. He’s 21+ but 6’7" and 312 pounds. Chuck Necaise, a defensive end from Limestone Community High School in Bartonville, Illinois, has accepted your invitation to play for your school next season. He’s 46++ Nat Rank #515. Ten more due to visit. Smother them with attention. Make offers to DE Duane Beyer of Washington (56+ but he’s set his heart on Virginia) and Jessie Ford of Illinois (46+ also visiting Idaho whom we outrank). The Match At #7 Michigan. They are 7-2 and 29-point favourites. We are now down to #109. They prefer the Power-I and their starting QB likes to run a lot, while specializing in very long passing. Raining, 53 degrees. Capacity crowd of 107,500. How much worse can things get? This much worse - Lose 7-51 Our only score is one touchdown from TE Everett. They outrush us by 272 net yards to 27. We outpass them by 210 yards to 168, which is precious little consolation seeing as they win 28 first downs to our 13 and storm into our red zone seven times. QB Shelton is sacked three times in eight attempts for minus 22 yards and succeeds with eight of twenty pass attempts. QB Boston comes on and is not sacked in three rush attempts, but only makes three yards overall. He succeeds with three of six passes. Converted RB Robb runs 27 yards, RB Morris 19. TE Everett caught four (and dropped one) of nine passes headed his way. RB Mossis caught three (and dropped two) of eight. Hero of the Defense was ILB Keeton with eleven tackles, four for loss. He was followed by DT Fowler with seven and nearly-fit-now OLB Griggs with six. Somehow, RB Morris takes up his traditional place in the Players of the Week list. Perhaps it’s a sympathy vote. On TV1 #20 Auburn win 20-17 at #14 Mississippi State. On TV2 #43 Missouri narrowly lose 32-35 at #2 Nebraska. Out for rest of the season RB Levine - torn triceps muscle RB Holmes - stretched knee ligament G Stickney - dislocated elbow RB Francis - broken clavicle TE Cooksey - torn thumb ligament TE Thurman - torn thumb ligament G Shelton - shoulder tendonitis Walking wounded TE Chandler - probable - deep thigh bruise -one week OLB Griggs - probable - ACL damage to knee - one week

2003 Week 13
Academics More grades in. Two players’ lowest are D-, three more D. Given six and two time units each respectively. Recruitment Brady Godfrey, an offensive guard from Sprague High School in Salem, Oregon, has accepted your invitation to play for your school next season. He’s 25+ 6’6" and 305 pounds. Eleven visitors, eleven places. Smother them with attention. And panic some more. The Match Hosting rivals Purdue. This year they’re #24, 7-3 and 24-point favourites. We are 2-8. Sunny, 45 degrees. The crowd of 44,800 fear this could be the final humiliation. But … Win 28-3 Is that an upset, or is that an upset? Purdue score first, a field goal half way through the first quarter. It’s the only time they enter our red zone. Thereafter, the traffic is all one way. Two touchdowns for RB Morris and two for converted RB Robb, both in their farewell games. We outrush them by 278 net yards to 119, they barely outpass us 118 yards to 116 and we win 21 first downs to their 11. The killer stat is penalties - they concede 12 to our 5. QB Sheldon, also in his farewell game, makes six runs without being sacked at all (though he only gains 17 yards) and succeeds in nine of fifteen passing attempts. RB Morris runs 190 yards. Next is Robb with 35. Spatz punts superbly averaging 33.8 yards (237 yards in seven punts, three of which land within their 20). Defense have less to do than in past weeks. Leading tacklers are DT Fowler with seven (one for loss), OLB Nails with six (ditto), ILB Keeton with five (ditto) and S Lundy. RB Morris is the game’s MVP, and is joined in the Players of the Week list by QB Sheldon and RB Robb. The cheers and songs ring out to celebrate victory over Purdue. (Historian’s note: Had the crowd known how long it would be before they saw another victory in South Bend, the joy would have died in their throats. And had the visitors known what the next years would bring for Notre Dame football, they would have rejoiced all the way home to West Lafayette.) On TV1 #15 Virginia go down 14-48 at #13 North Carolina On TV2 #28 Michigan State go down 21-31 at #17 Penn State. Notre Dame’s season 2003 playing ends. Rock bottom of the Big Ten at 3-8 overall, 1-7 in the Conference.

2003 Post Season
Notre Dame have no games in the post season, but recruitment continues. Week 14 Bill Cornplow, a wide receiver from Kalama High School in Kalama, Washington, has accepted your invitation to play for your school next season. He’s 45+ Jessie Ford, a defensive end from Yorkville High School in Yorkville, Illinois, has accepted your invitation to play for your school next season. He’s 46+ Deon Garcia, an outside linebacker from Arsenal Technical High School in Indianapolis, Indiana, has accepted your invitation to play for your school next season. He’s 43+ Gino Gardner, a cornerback from Fruita Monument High School in Fruita, Colorado, has accepted your invitation to play for your school next season. He’s 28+ Five visitors remain: RB Brook, RB McConnell, C Crockett, DE Beyar and S Schwartz. Invite some backup RB, tho all say they have preferences elsewhere. On TV1 #11 Texas win a close game 34-31 at Texas A&M.. On TV2 #17 Mississippi State triumph 16-3 over #36 Mississippi. [b]Week 15 Brenden McConnell, a running back from Bartlett High School in Anchorage, Alaska, has accepted your invitation to play for your school next season. He’s 36+ and in the Alaska All-State team. Duane Beyer, a defensive end from Oliver M Hazen High School in Renton, Washington, has accepted your invitation to play for your school next season. He’s 56+ Nat Rank 824. Which leaves QB Brook RB Myers C Crockett and S Schwartz visiting. Smother them with attention. Week 16 (First Play Off Week) Ricardo Myers, a running back from Brinkley High School in Brinkley, Arkansas, has accepted your invitation to play for your school next season. He’s 31+ and in the Arkansas All-State Team. Jim Overby, a tight end from Walter L Cohen High School in New Orleans, Louisiana, has accepted your invitation to play for your school next season. He’s 39+ in the Louisiana All-State Team and will come without a scholarship. Daniel Crockett, a center from North Sanpete High School in Mount Pleasant, Utah, has accepted your invitation to play for your school next season. He’s 28+ Malcolm Szilter, an offensive guard from Compton High School in Compton, California, has accepted your invitation to play for your school next season. He’s 20+ 6’8" 311 pounds and will come without a scholarship. Which finally ends the recruiting! It includes the players ranked 440, 515, 806 and 824 in the nation - and demonstrates how futile it was to start the season by aiming for apparent possibilities in the Top 100. At the end of the regular season, the only unbeaten teams are Miami of Florida and Nevada-Las Vegas. No teams without a win, but two are 1-10, Duke and Rutgers. In the play-off semi-finals: #3 Wisconsin beat #4 Stanford 52-36. #7 Texas lost to #1 Indiana 20-38 And in the final Indiana beat Wisconsin 42-30. Player of the Year was Daniel Cassidy QB at Texas: 302-for-546, 4706 yards, 45TD, 11Int. Notre Dame have no entries in the National Awards. The Big Ten awards honour: DE Timothy Fowler in the 2nd Team S Xavier Maumau in the Academic Team

2003 TEAM SUMMARY
Code:
Code:
Improvement in rushing yards and yards per carry; drastic decline in passing yards and yards per attempt. Now painfully better at running than passing. Opponents the exact reverse.

2003 INDIVIDUAL SUMMARY
Code:
Massive fall in the yards per attempt from last year’s 7.36. Code:
Morris and Holmes both improved their yards per attempt, as did the team as a whole. The running game looks to be developing. Code:
More attempts (up from 235), fewer catches (down from 127) many fewer yards gained (down from 1731) but yards per catch pretty constant (last year was 13.6). Message: the problem is in passes reaching their destination and then being caught, not in the running with the ball afterwards. Code:
More tackles (up from 602), but fewer TFL (down from 90) and fewer sacks (down from 22.0). Defense was weaker this year. The stats don’t lie (tho they can be misinterpreted).
