Thing is, we just don't know how good he is? It's easy to look good when you have a 200-yard rusher behind you every game. Plus, defensive coordinator's are going to start picking up tendencies and weaknesses as they accumulate film on Jones.

He had a great three game stretch. But I'm not sure that it is indicative of him being a good QB long term.

By all accounts he was quite a knucklehead just a year or two ago. I think it's very much up in the air that he can handle adversity without the structure of a college program. I get why he might leave and financially it probably makes sense, but I worry he's trying to run when he just learned how to walk.

edit: This is why kids should get some time to workout and get evaluations before they have to make this kind of decision.

Very little experience.
Already has a kid.

Tends to get fat.

What's not to like? I would take him over Winston/Mariota, much less anyone else!

Wow...I am still hesitant about the Rex hire...but he is saying the right things and doing the right things so far, and Greg Roman might be a decent OC for us...

It's just that....It's Rex....

Well, I will be watching the new season with trepidation.

I really think Buffalo got the best coach available outside of Harbaugh. Question is: can Whaley find him a solid QB?

Miller probably. I still think Barrett has a good chance to start over Jones if he's healthy by the start of summer camp. Plus you know, injuries occasionally happen...

Gotta say I'm enjoying watching some in the media be all up in arms that Jones had the audacity to hold a press conference only to stick around.

And one of them at least will go pro after next year, leaving a year or two for the other.

Welcome back Greg Jones, for that final day!

Inside the Jaguars: Jones Retires

Fans loved him. He converted from a Rb with dreams of glory to a FB who led blocks for years for us for Taylor and Jones-Drew. He was really good as a FB for really long time. Thanks Jones!

Highlight of the Tomsula press conference was a Jazzercise reference. He looked nervous as all hell. I sure hope they win a lot next year, he seems like too good a guy to have to deal with the shitstorm that will ensue if the team doesn't make the playoffs again.

Heard a stat on the radio today, the Big10 hasn't had a QB taken in the first round since Kerry Collins in 1995. Twenty years! Jones made the right decision.

And next year Jones, Cook and Hackenburg could all be in the mix for first round.

Its a little concerning that he hasnt had a lot of success elsewhere since leaving the Giants but I think some of that is just personnel and organization issues.

The new 49ers coach was obviously not hired for his media skills. Here's his first interview:

The Jags apparently are 60M under the cap. Talk about an empty cupboard. And it's looking like joeckel sucks and the jury on Bortles is out but not promising. Not sure who they can even get. Suh and Revis both on year to year cash type pay to play deals could be interesting. And aren't we close to the cash vs cap floor finally kicking in? I suspect that the cost of a brick goin' up

I'm admittedly not an expert on the Jags, but my best friend is a fan and I've heard exactly the opposite about the team in terms of future prospects. Bortles showed good flashes and most people seem to think they're a team on the rise.

Third worst rookie QBR since 2006, ahead of only Claussen and Gilbert. It's a long road til he even gets respectable, even if they rebuild the line, by finding a new LT, Guard and center. Who knows, I've been wrong all the time.

I think it's tough to be a QB when you have zero talent around you. Jags are pretty bad on the offensive side of the ball. I think Bortles will pan out for them if they give him some talent and don't play musical offensive coordinators.

He typically stumbles slowly for a half a yard and then falls

It's kind of absurd that this is how long we take to judge rookie QB's these days - what the hell do you expect for a guy taken out of Central Florida, given one training camp and thrown into the fire on a terrible team?

I think he would've been better off if Jacksonville had let him sit and learn. Unless they take a big step this year, Bortles will probably be facing three offensive coordinators in three years.

I don't know. I was trying to find the article but typically if you start out like garbage over an extended period of time, the odds of turn around are not promising. Some of it's his line, but he has a propensity for throwing picks that is going to have to dramatically correct itself.

Bortles also posted a worse QBR in his last 6 starts than in his first.

He threw 17 INT (not sure I'd call that a propensity) and took 55 sacks with a garbage offensive line and no running game to speak of.

Not to mention - how many of those picks were the result of garbage WRs not being on the same page as him?

Every INT isn't 100% the QB's fault, you know that stevew.

Look at the stats, an he's so far below replacement value his contemporaries are guys like Gabbert, early Alex Smith, 49ers years Trent Dilfer, Andrew Walters, Jamarcus Russell. I'm just saying he wasn't just bad last year, he was bloody bloody awful. Like Thad Lewis would have been an upgrade. Or even Blaine Gabbert.

This isn't me writing him off, merely stating that so few players that were as awful as he was have ever amounted to much.

What is going on in Jacksonville kind of reminds me of what went on in Tampa Bay in the late-80's and early-90's. Where they kept bringing in big name college QB's (Young, Testaverde, Dilfer) but gave them absolutely nothing to work with.

I'm not sure Luck or Wilson or Manning or Brady could succeed in Jacksonville right now.

Bortles is learning on the job with zero tools and, apparently, musical offensive coordinators. Geno Smith had the same offensive coordinator for his first two seasons in the NFL plus a much more solid running game in 2014.

Some have asked why can Fox and Del RIo for Kubiak and a former player for both gives a huge reason why :

Yep, they bled all the way to two playoff appearances in nine seasons.

But I don't really see anything here. I'm sure if you actually asked around, Fox has his supporters as well and Kubiak has his detractors. Nature of people.
