United 93 - 10/10. Just watch it, that's all I can really think to say. Is it difficult to watch? Immensely. Will you cry? Yes. I really just don't know what to say. Just watch it.

Hooligans (aka Green Street Hooligans) (2005) - 3 of 5 stars
imdb plot outline: A wrongfully expelled Harvard undergrad moves to London, where he is introduced to the violent underworld of football hooliganism. my take: An enjoyable movie, nothing epic. At its core i think it's some sort of "fight club meets football (soccer)". The acting is solid throughout, with Elijah Wood being good and Charlie Hunnam being pretty damn solid. |

American Dreamz - 4/10 - Not really funny. I wanted to think I liked it, and I understand it was more subtle satire than out and out comedy... but it just didn't resonate with me... and seeing as how I'm a liberal, if it doesn't resonate with me, it failed. Shame. I find Hugh Grant enjoyable, Mandy Moore hot, I like John Cho and that blond girl in their limited roles. Dennis Quaid seemed like a bad Will Ferrell doing George Bush.

I saw Talladega Nights: the Ballad of Ricky Bobby and was disappointed. Not only was most of the movie NOT shot at night but also there was no "ballad." Given that, it was a hilarious movie and worth seeing. 7.5/10
The Barnyard animals was a little funnier. It was a hoot. The only bad thing was that I had to go with a child so I wouldn't lool like a perv in there all by myself. 8/10 FOR THE PERVS, THO: Ok, if you're not homophobic or if you think that drag queens are funny, rent Girls Will be Girls. OMG! That was hilarious. There is not a single woman in the cast. Even the little girl is actually a little boy in drag. That's not what makes the movie funny, though. The premise is silly and the put downs are top-notch. Worth a rental, worth a download, worth . . . a PURCHASE!

Match Point -- 2/10. Typical Woody "Pedophile" Allen drivel. Why this man is still making movies is beyond me. They're worthless and idiotic.
Ultraviolet -- 1/10. First Sci-Fi movie made since "2001: ASO" that I turned off before the film was up. Completely nonsensical. There's a BBC series with the same name also about vampires. That's a much better pick.

Wow, I heard Hollywoodland was good.
The Black Dahlia (2006) - High expectations going in. Slightly disappointed, but I still enjoyed it. Leaving the theatres, everyone basically trashed it that I was with because it is easy to get confused, and someone pointed out to me- "You're just defending De Palma." Listen, if you keep track of names and realize it's not the type of movie to summarize what's going on, that's up to you, the viewer, you'll like it. If you like simple movies, pass. *6/10* Lucky Number Slevin (2006) - Thuroughly enjoyed this one. It's like The Usual Suspects spliced with Snatch's style. Much for the same reasons I liked Kiss Kiss Bang Bang so much. Kept me entertained for the entire 1:50. *8.5/10* |

Pride & Prejudice (2005) - Peroid piece, a family with 5 daughters that all want to be married. Instead of it being like a business however (like the olden days), these girls treat it with emotion and feelings... Keira Knightley deals with 3 potential suitors as it is. It got great reviews, and it kept me interested, but I must say it didn't blow me away and there was no part that I could take away as 'memorable'. I'm torn on how to grade it, but I'll go with a *6/10*.

Sid & Nancy (1986) - A movie starring Gary Oldman and Chloe Webb as The Sex Pistols' Sid Vicious and his inept lover Nancy Spungen. Lead singer Johnny "Rotten" Lydon has written off this movie as being completely off base, but it still gives you a general idea about the relationship- Sid met Nancy, she got him into heroin, broke up the Sex Pistols, and it eventually led to their early passing. A good movie if you want to get some knowledge about the infamous couple, which is why I bought it for $7 off ebay. *5/10*

You are a kind, kind man. Black Dahlia was one of the 10 worst movies I have ever seen in the theater. De Palma now has 2 movies on that list, with Mission To Mars ranking far higher. De Palma and Josh Hartnett are now offically on my black list. Hartnett was HORRIBLY miscast, and after the debacle that was Wicker Park i'm totally done with this guy. Hilary Swank was the best of the major actors, but that isn't saying all that much. I liked Rachel Miner in her small role (Swank's sister), and I thought the meeting the parents/dinner scene would have been an "interesting" short film in it's own right. The rest of the movie is total crap though. Some photography is beautiful though, De Palma can put together soem great shots. But when you have bad acting and TERRIBLE writing, you end with a steaming pile of crap. Bad, bad movie. 1 of 5 stars. |

Nothing much happened. Maybe the book was more exciting. The Lakehouse - 5/10 It didn't completely suck which is a compliment I guess. Also contained a plot featuring time travel so it gets a little bonus. Without the time travel it's 2/10.

Pinata: Survivor Island - 0.1/10
Wow, this is truly the worst movie I've ever seen. The "big name" stars include such names as Sabrina the Teenage witch's boyfriend, the geeky guy from Buffy, and that blonde chick from My Name is Earl. The plot goes like this: Some "teenagers" travel to an island to take part in a treasure hunt of sorts. Each guy is handcuffed a girl and the pair has to find as many pieces of underwear that is hidden around the island as they can before time runs out. While searching one couple decides to get stoned and then finds a strange, evil looking pinata, so they decide to crack it open. The guy wacks it with a stick, which awakens all the evil spirits contained within the pinata, and causes it to come alive with some of the worst CGI ever put to screen. I'm fairly confident I could best these special effects with MS Paint. The "scary" pinata (which looks like a clay demony type of thing) then proceeds to hunt down the "teens" one by one. Now, at the very least this movie could have contained gratitious nudity or sex, but alas, it is not so. The only positive about the film is the inclusion of some actress named Lara Boyd Rhodes who looks absolutely smoking in this movie, playing a teenager despite being 33 at the time it was filmed. I've never heard of her before, but after checking out her other appearances on her imdb page I'm really not surprised.

The Da Vinci Code 6/10
Good story, but the book is so much more fast paced. I heard they're making Dan Brown's "Angels and Demons" into a movie which I'm extremely stoked about. The whole "science vs. faith" storyline is LIGHT YEARS better than what The DaVinci Code offered; I just hope they do A&E justice. Last edited by Lorena : 11-27-2006 at 09:42 PM. |

Stranger Than Fiction (3.75/5)
Imdb calls it Charlie Kaufman (Adaptation) lite. I agree--in a good way. Will Ferrell's dramatic turn is enjoyable and, more importantly, believable. An enjoyable life-affirming film.

I'll pipe in on this thread:
Borat (9.5/10) - Some of the scenes with his manager just aren't any good... but it is hilarious all the way through. You'll never forget the hotel room wrestling scene, that's for sure. The Queen (10/10) - If you have even a passing interest in the British Royal Family, or the death of Princess Diana, watch this movie. At the very least, Helen Mirren will get an Oscar nom. for her portrayal of the Queen, while I think that the movie will get several other nominations as well. Completely fascinating all the way through.... I especially liked the guy who played Prince Charles.

Wow, it's a shame this didn't get more attention last year! Hilarious and incredibly well done movie starring Val Kilmer and Robert Downey, Jr. I can't imagine this role working without RDJ. Very, very quality stuff. I'm sorry I waited so long to check this one out. |

Breaking News - 8.5/10
Chinese movie from a couple years ago...the general plot of the movie surrounds the pursuit of a gang of robbers by the Hong Kong PD and how both sides try to use the media to their advantage. Good story & good characters. The only reason I don't rate it higher is that I think some of the things they portray (quick changing public opinion shifts/media reaction) was somewhat unrealistic. |

Please dont try to pop shit like *I* am joe action movie. And I temper any opinion of yours knowing you're a guy who liked The Black Dahlia and seems to have a subconscious homoerotic fixation on Josh Hartnett. Now onto this piece of shit movie: When you are introducting new characters in the 3rd hour, you're watching a bad movie. It's as simple as that. And for a guy with so much screen time, they gave Matt Damon absolutely nothing to do. One more blank stare at the camera and I was going to puke. Jolie was a waste of space, there were a couple nonsensical plot points that I wont get into to... and ultimately there was no reason at all to care about any character. There are bad movies like Little Man, which consciously know they're not making high art when filming. It actually takes talent going horribly wrong to make a trainwreck like The Good Shepherd. The script is shit and the end result was a really bloated movie. I'm guessing no one had the balls to tell DeNiro the thing was a painful bore at any stage. I cant recall the last time I simply wanted to movie to end this badly (wait...actually I can... the 3rd Lord Of The Rings). After seeing this I hope DeNiro waits another 13 years before directing again. I've thought it through, analyzed it, tried to like it... it's just a bad movie, simple as that. |

Saw Eragon tonight. Nice, not too long...entertaining enough. I'd say...6.5 out of 10. They set it up for the sequel and well...I don't think it has the depth of all the other fantasy genres out there, but it was nice that you didn't have to sit there and wait an hour and a half for a back story. I think they intentionally made it as an anti-Lord of the Rings, in terms of how fast they glossed over stuff to get to the end. But I was okay with that.

Meh. I've read enough Phillip K. Dick to know that the man was brilliant (I haven't read this book, however) and his ability to create a dystopic reality is what makes his stuff fun like Orwell or Bradbury. I'm not sure if it's just the fact that the medium (rotoscope animation) was basically 95% of the movie. I found myself watching the rotoscoping more than the actual movie at many points. I think, like Memento, if the "trick", in this case the rotoscoping, wasn't there the movie would have been horrible. All the acting in it is well done, but the ending wasn't a "wow" moment at all and you pretty much see it coming from almost the first 15 minutes. Definitely glad I rented.

I'm basically in the undecided camp on this movie (saw it in the theatre when it came out)... but im 100% with you in finding the medium itself very distracting. For me personally, im just not sure rotoscoping animation makes for a watchable movie... it just kind of distracts and annoys me. |

WE ARE MARSHALL: 8/10
I'm probably biased, since I live in Huntington, but I thought this was much better than I thought. Matthew McGoneGoGehy (yes I know I spelled it wrong) should have never been cast, though. He just didn't have the acting chops for it. Matthew Fox, however, stole the show. Having met Red Dawson more than a few times, he did a good job of mimicking the person pretty well. Granted, this means more if you're native to the area or are a fan of Marshall, but it's a great tearjerker/feel good sports-ish film |

Meryl Streep is one of the best actresses of our time, and Anne Hathaway does a wonderful job as the lead character. I thought it would be a snoozer, but that added hint of ruthlessness was enough to keep me into the movie from start to finish. |
