It's never explicitly clear how he was hanged, as the visions only come in snippets. But early on in the vision are torn sheets. Then near the end, I get a thought that says "maybe this will get things moving," followed by a loud crash and darkness.

I interpet that to mean he tried to hang himself, the sheets tore, and he fell to the floor, knocking himself out.

You all are awake suddenly looking for the others, someone realizes Chief RUm is missing and as everyone goes room to room to find him they come to room 215, there in the middle of the floor is a burnt out pile of ash that is all that remains of Chief Rum.
