The SEC West has certainly been exciting this year. It appeared Arkansas would run away with the West, but losses to Alabama and Georgia made this a three horse race. Arkansas, LSU, and Auburn are all 5-2 in SEC play.
#13 Arkansas will host LSU this weekend and the game will be shown on TV2. Auburn plays at Alabama on TV4. LSU needs to beat Arkansas and for Alabama to beat Auburn. Lose to Arkansas and the Tigers are out. Auburn apparently needs to beat Alabama and for LSU to beat Arkansas. Lose to Alabama and its over for Auburn. Arkansas apparently needs to beat LSU and their in. A loss to LSU puts them out of the SEC West race.

It seems like Brewster never does as well as he really does, when I read the report it always seems like they're shuting him down, of course than I say the stats and he always has 150+ yds...

Brewster seems to have a series or two a game where he just manhandles the defense and gets a 10+ average per carry. He hasn't been adept at breaking a play open, but steadily gets yardage as the game goes on.
As for games, I should have the winner of the SEC West tonight, and then tomorrow or the next day start the SEC Championship game.

These Vols Aren't Like the Others
John Adams, Knoxville News-Sentinel The Tennessee Volunteer football team just wrapped up a spectacular regular season, going undefeated through 11 games. Even with a SEC Championship Game and a possible National Championship Game in the future, this season has been unbelievable. Volunteer football teams have gone undefeated before in Knoxville, but not in the same way as this team. This team is lead by a pair of seniors, and the two couldn’t be more different. One has been on the road to stardom from the beginning, while the other is making the most of his moment in time. Running back J.B. Brewster came to UT as a soft-spoken young man from Rhode Island. Brewster set all sorts of high school season records for the state and quickly became one of the most sought after recruits in the nation. Miami, Florida State, Notre Dame, and Nebraska all came calling. But in the end, Brewster thought he had the best chance to succeed at the University of Tennessee, and he was right. Brewster is now the vocal team leader of a defiant Volunteer team; a team that refuses to lose despite the odds against them. Brewster has taken the offense on his shoulders, and by shear led this team through the season. In the South Carolina game, he eclipsed the 1,800-yard mark; something he’s done each season at UT. Keep in mind he still has two games left this year. He will likely have another 2,000-yard season under his belt. Brewster also leads the team in receptions this year in receptions, and led the team in receptions last year as well. When called upon to return kicks and punts halfway through this season due to injuries, he responded admirably and returned his a punt for a TD as well. The other leader on this squad is the often-criticized quarterback, Ardent Enthusiast. Enthusiast isn’t an official captain of the team. The captains were chosen over the spring before AE was forced to become the quarterback of the team. However, AE still fills the captain’s role, even if it’s not official. The young man has taken every snap of the last five games, and backups have only played mop up roles in three of the games all season. His passes won’t remind you of Peyton Manning or Casey Clausen. His scrambling won’t remind you of a Heath Shuler or Tee Martin when scrambling. He won’t be playing in the NFL on Sundays next season. I wouldn’t even mark him down on a CFL roster. What AE lacks in skill, he makes up in heart. He made the best of a bad situation and has refused to let SEC defenses take advantage of him. He didn’t have spectacular games each week. More importantly, he didn’t lose games with mistakes. Regardless of this weekend’s outcome, fans will long remember this season. Running backs like Brewster and quarterbacks like Enthusiast don’t come around often. |

SEC Championship Game Moved
Fires in Atlanta Cause Concern, Game Moved to Alexandria, LA Raging fires in the Atlanta area have concerned SEC officials enough to suddenly move the game from the Georgia Dome to Alexandria, La. Alexandria is home to the Louisiana College Wildcats, a division III team. The stadium holds approximately 44,000 fans. Any fan not wishing to make the trip to Alexandria that has purchased tickets will be offered a full refund of the ticket price. The move was not the surprise; the location was. SEC officials cited other popular cities and stadiums had already booked their stadiums in advance and couldn't renege on their deals. UT officials are understandably upset, and have filed a grievance with the SEC. Regardless of the grievance's outcome, the game will be played in Alexandria this weekend. I hope you're all ready for some football! Even if it is in LSU's backyard. |

With the injury to DE Doug Stanton, sophomore Wesley Morris will make his first start of the season tonight.
CB Bart Serra and DT Horace Bean are both back and ready to go. We'll gladly welcome them back to their starting spots on defense. WR Thomas Castleberry is officially doubtful, but he insists that he wants to play, even if it's only on special teams. We've returned to some finesse football plays, and they went well in practice. RBs Brandon Mason and Terrell Bradford return to their normal spots on the depth chart. We also decided to give J.B. the ball more, and it's almost a certainty the FBs won't get to run again this year.

It's freaking freezing here in Alexandria. It's 41 degrees. I'm freezing my Volunteer butt off!
Fortunately, the game will be viewed on TV1 for all of you....you won't have to come here and brave this cold weather!

Clear skies, and 41 degrees here tonight in Alexandria, LA.
UT is chosen to be the visiting team (we better be), and we win the toss. WR Steven Everett and RB Marc Maxcy go back to field the kick. The Tigers send the kickoff 1 yard deep into the endzone, and we're off! Maxcy should have stayed in the endzone, and is spilled at the 12 yard line. Dejected, he returns to the sideline. We'll take over on our 12.

"Power I left, split right, option right, on 2, on 2" and we head to the ball.
I look out to the defense, and LSU has chosen to run a "50" defense. Not a bad choice, since they've got a wicked DT. I take the snap and sprint right, I turn upfield, but the defense forces me to pitch. RB J.B. Brewster takes the pitch and runs for 9 before going down. We send Brewster up the middle on the next play, but he's stuffed for no gain by a MLB. 3rd and 1, and we play power football. Brewster gains 2 over right guard, and all is well. 1st and 10 on the 23, and we run play action. WR Steven Everett is open deep, but I just can't get the ball there. Everett tries to adjust, but it's impossible. The pass falls incomplete. We follow it with another play action, this time intended for TE Thomas Kolodzik, who has curled under the coverage at the 1st down marker. He makes the catch but is dropped immediately for a 9 yard gain. Brewster polishes off another first down run for 2 yards, this time off left guard. Unfortunately, we're backed up on the next run by Brewster due to a holding call. We're sent back 11 yards for some reason to the UT 23 yard line. 1st and 21. I try to float a pass out to FB Roman Prescott in the flat, but the OLB on that side had a different idea. He tipped the ball away. We run a slant pattern with Everett, and he gains 9 over the middle. 3rd and 12, and we send Brewster in motion towards Everett. Pump fake to Brewster and then deep over the middle to Everett, who makes the catch and gains 16 on the play. First down, Tennessee! Ball now on the UT 48. We run a tight end screen next, and Kolodzik makes 8 yards on the play. We follow that with another trick play of sorts. We fake the toss right, and I bootleg left. I've fooled everyone but the MLB, but I somehow escape him and go down the sideline for 9 yards before getting gang tackled. Another first down, this time at the LSU 35 yard line. A toss to Brewster gains 4 up the left sideline, and he gains 3 off left tackle on the next play. 3rd and 3, and we send him off right guard, but he's stuffed for no gain by an anxious safety. I look to the sideline, asking what they want us to do. Go for it is the signal and in comes WR Dennis Harrison with the play. Out shuttles FB Willie Jordan. Play action and I ball fake to Brewster and turn to the right looking for either Harrison or Everett...but I'm not given time to throw to either. LSU ran a stunt on the defensive line and a DE came free. I am splattered for a 6 yard loss, and we turn the ball over on downs to LSU on the 34 yard line. Rather frustrating to see such a good drive go to waste. I'm really aggravated, and head to the sideline to talk it over with the coaches. 6:58 left in the 1st quarter; no score.

The only time I get to spend on the sideline is about 20 seconds long, as LSU comes out and throws an INT on the first play from scrimmage. Thank safety Melvin Briggs, if you get the chance.
We take over on our 48 yard line, with 6:51 left to go. We return with the option, but LSU has revamped their defense. They shut us down for a 2 yard loss, and their stud DT was in on it. We send Brewster up the middle next, and he nets 4, but a post pattern pass to Everett is overthrown as I try to lead him too much. No question. We'll punt from the LSU 48. P Daniel Wheeler comes in and drops a beauty of a punt to the 8, where it rolls out of bounds. Good show, Wheeler! 5:29 left in the 1st; no score.

LSU runs 5 plays this time, but is forced to punt. CB Bart Serra fields the punt and returns it 4 yards to the UT 37 yard line with 2:54 left in the first quarter.
Brewster starts the drive off with a 3 yard run up the middle, and follows it with a similar run for 4 yards. We send Brewster in motion, and aim to get the ball to him, but that blasted DT harassed me and I end up missing the target. I'm really starting to hate LSU's defensive front. Wheeler comes out for another punt, and this one lands in the returner's hands at the 7. Fortunately he tries to get fancy on the return, and ends up losing a yard. Mark the ball on the LSU 6 yard line. After a defensive holding penalty and a 3 and out series by LSU, they're forced into a 4th and 1 on their own 25 yard line as the quarter expires. End of the first quarter. No score.

LSU sends their punter out to start the 2nd half, and he sends a short 29 yard punt down to the UT 46 yard line. Serra steps away, and the ball is downed there. We'll take over from there.
We run option left, and I dart through a hole on the left side for 3 yards. We run it again, but this time LSU fills all the holes, and the corner stuffs Brewster for a 3 yard loss on the pitch. 3rd and 10 and we come out with a screen to Prescott, who makes the catch but is dropped immediately for a 4 yard loss on the play. Out comes Mr. Wheeler again, and this time his 38 yard punt gets to the 20 yard line. A 3 yard return sets LSU up on their own 23 yard line. 12:41 left in the half; no score.

The Tigers can't do anything with the ball, and go 3 and out. In the process, they mix in 3 penalties, and punt from their own 15. The 42 yard punt is returned 3 yards by Serra to the UT46. 10:58 left on the clock.
Once again, we trot out to the field, hoping to score some points. We start out with play action to Kolodzik, who makes 10 yards of a shallow crossing route. We follow that with Brewster up the middle, who gains 10 more yards. Brewster takes a pitch left on the next play for 2 yards, and then churns out another dozen on a rare counter play by the Vols. First and 10 on the Tiger 20 yard line. Running with Brewster seems to be working, and we keep with it. He plows up the middle for 4 more yards, and then off right guard for 2 more. 3rd and 4, and we send Brewster in motion. I look to get him the ball again, and he opens up on an out route. A throw a wounded duck out to him, but he adjusts well, and pulls in the ball for a 9 yard gain. 1st and goal on the 5. We send Brewster off tackle, but he's stuffed for no gain. We run play action off the same play and it works to perfection. FB Willie Jordan is wide open along the goal line, and my less than perfect pass is hauled in for a touchdown! TOUCHDOWN, TENNESSEE!! Alston adds the extra point, and we're in business. Too bad it took most of the first half to score. This might be a tight one. 6:38 left in the half; UT 7, LSU 0.

The Tigers continue to struggle on offense, and go 3 and out again. The punt is fielded by Serra at the UT 36 yard line, but he's absolutely crushed for no gain.
5:15 on the clock. Brewster takes another pitch left and makes 4 yards. The option right on the next play is foiled, and Brewster is lucky to only lose a yard after I pitched to him. LSU jumped offsides due to my hard count, but on 3rd and 2 I telegraph my pass and a LSU middle linebacker comes away with the interception. LSU's stud tackle makes sure I'm blocked, and I nearly have to peek through my earhole to see Everett make the tackle at the 50 yard line. DANG IT! Not what I needed here! 3:50 left in the half; Tennessee 7, Louisiana State 0.

QB Krug and the LSU Tigers march downfield, but an errant pass is picked off by our own MLB, Mitch Briggs. Picking the ball off on the 8 yard line, he sprints down to the UT42 before being caught by a receiver.
First and 10 with 1:19 left on the clock. We come out passing, and I guess I have been telegraphing who I throw to big time. Kolodzik is double teamed, but I throw the ball in there anyway as I'm dropped to the ground. To my amazement my pass has just enough wobble in it to evade the outstretched hands of both defenders and reach Kolodzik, who continues upfield for a gain of 19 before being pulled down from behind. We're rolling and we get the guys back to the line of scrimmage as quickly as possible. Literally, we're running the same play over again. This time Kolodzik pushes a safety over trying to get open, and he's flagged for offensive pass interference. Goodbye, field position. Goodbye, chance to score. 1:14 left on the clock, and we pitch to Brewster who gains 3 up the left side of the field. He's stopped at the UT 49 yard line. RB Brandon Mason spells Brewster for a play and makes a 4 yard reception out of a screen. We call time out immediately. 50 seconds left on the clock. Ball on the LSU 47. 3rd and 8. What do you call? Might as well be a fade route. We try it, but Everett is covered well. The ball is tipped away. In comes Wheeler, who shanks a 24 yard punt; but that's not the worst of it. The terrible punt catches our coverage team off guard, and the returner makes 20 yards before finally getting tackled. LSU takes over on their own 43 yard line. Perfect. Absolutely perfect. Where's Kolodzik. He and I need to have a little talk. Fortunately, it doesn't account to points, as our defense stuffs LSU on three consecutive plays to end the half. Halftime. UT 7, LSU 0. Now, for your halftime enjoyment, the Pineville, LA. High School Marching Band!

The game will be finished tomorrow. Scout's honor. I wasn't a scout, but I was a Webelos for about 4 months.

Shoot. I hadn't even thought about the draft. I'll pick it back up.

Halftime in the visitor locker room, and we're up by only 7.
This game has been a dog fight for the first half. Just what you'd expect out of two Power I football teams. I'm glad our defense is as talented as you'll find. They came up with some big interceptions in the first half. We decide to try and change up our blocking schemes on the option. It just wasn't working well in the first half. Other than that, we seemed to do well. Brewster gained about 62 yards on 21 carries. Not a great average, but I'll take him over any back in the nation, any time. I wonder if 7 points will be enough to win this one as we head back out onto the field for the second half.

LSU takes the kick in the endzone for a touchback to start things off, and soon afterward punt the ball back to us. J.B. Brewster went in to return, but had to make a fair catch at the Tennessee 26 yard line. 12:13 left in the 3rd.
We call a toss left on 1st down, and J.B. breaks it open. Only a wide pursuit angle by the weakside linebacker stops him after a gain of 17. We send Brewster up the middle for 2, and then go option right. Brewster takes the pitch and goes up the sideline for 4. 3rd and 4 at the UT49, and I throw a quick hitch to Everett, who makes the catch, and slips past the corner. He is tackled, however, by the safety after a gain of 9. First down! Brewster goes off left tackle for 3, and then we send him off right tackle for 3 more. 3rd and 4 again, this time on the LSU 36. Slant pass to Everett. Tipped away by a ILB. I glance to the sideline. We're going for it again. We call for a play fake and an out pattern to Everett. It works, and Everett gains 9 on the play. 1st and 10 on the LSU 27. Option left, and the end crashes on me. Brewster takes the pitch and heads into the hole vacated by the DE. He gains 5 before the Tigers drag him down. We come back with a similar option left, but Brewster gains only a yard this time. 3rd and 4 once again, this time on the 21. The defense has to think we'll pass again, but we don't. Power football, baby! We send our big men behind our strong left side of the line and plow through the Tigers for the needed 4 yards. The Tiger defense is reeling, and Brewster punches them in the mouth with another run up the middle for 12 to set up a 1st and goal at the 5 yard line. Another plunge up the middle sets Brewster just inches away from the goal line. We have to get him in there, and we do, off right guard! Touchdown! TOUCHDOWN, TENNESSEE!! Alston adds the extra point, and we have some breathing room, finally. Not only that, but we ate a huge chunk of the clock up. 5:20 left in the 3rd; UT 14, LSU 0.

You know, I love college football. Where else can you start a drive on the 1 yard line?
LSU's returner got to his own 26, but a flag way back at the 2 yard line indicated a block in the back, and LSU was sent to their own 1. WoW. We all watch intently from the sideline to see if the defense can add 2 points to the score, but they fail to do so. Two no gainers, and a 3 yard run. It's followed by a 48 yard punt, however. Serra backs up and makes the catch and sprints down the sideline. He passes a couple of waves of defenders, and has only the punter to beat. The punter dives at Serra's legs, and Serra isn't able to avoid him. He drops after a 14 yard gain. Tennessee ball on the LSU 38 yard line. 3:10 left in the 3rd quarter. Brewster bulldozes off right tackle for 6 yards. We go to play action on 2nd down, but Kolodzik drops the ball. 3rd down and 4, and we come back with a similar play. This time the defense is very well prepared and the OLB picks my pass off at the LSU 23 and gains 13 on the return. I return to the sideline shaking my head. Another wasted opportunity. My teammates try to pick me up by letting me know that LSU can't score on our defense. No one can. 2:24 left in the 3rd; UT 14, LSU 0.

LSU isn't able to move the ball downfield efficiently, and is forced into a 4th and 2 on their own 43 yard line.
To our surprise, the LSU coach rolls the dice and goes for it. But he passes the ball. Our defense bats the ball away, and we take over on the LSU 43 yard line. I love our defense. My turnover didn't result in points! 57 seconds left in the 3rd. We go for the kill, but my lob pass down the sideline is knocked away. A pass to Mason falls incomplete as I scramble to avoid the rush of their tackle. 3rd and 10. Dropback pass, no need to fake. Everett and Kolodzik both go deep and Kolodzik breaks for the flag. I lob it out to him and he adjusts to make the catch at the 24 yard line for a first down! We come back with a screen to Brewster, who gains 10 and another first down before going out of bounds at the 14 yard line. Closing seconds of the 3rd quarter, and Brewster plunges off right tackle down to the 6 yard line as the whistle sounds the end of the quarter. End of the 3rd quarter. Tennessee 14, LSU 0.

Brewster starts off the 4th quarter with an explosion. He follows a crushing block by Prescott up the middle for a touchdown!
TOUCHDOWN, TENNESSEE!!! Life is really good as Alston adds the XP. 14:52 left in the game; UT 21, LSU 0.

LSU drives downfield in big chunks of yards, but safety Melvin Briggs comes up with another interception at the UT 19 yard line with 13:35 left in the game.
Brewster carries twice, one off left tackle for a gain of two, the other on a toss to the left for 5. Play action to Kolodzik is ineffective as we fail to block their tackle again. I run for my life and throw the ball away. 4th down and in comes Wheeler. Oh my God. What did he do? A 24 yard punt and 2 yard return set the Tigers up inside our side of the field. 1st and 10, Tigers, on our 48 yard line. 12:33 left in the game. UT 21, LSU 0.

LSU scores quickly, thanks mostly to a 43 yard bomb on the first play. We held for a while on the goal line, but they punched it in.
The XP makes it 21-7 with 9:56 left in the game. We expect an onside kick, but instead LSU kicks deep. Everett returns the kick to the UT26. Brewster carries up the middle for 4, and then I gain 2 yards off the option. 3rd and 4 on the UT 32, and we go with a play action pass, but their DT is all over me again. This time he hauls me down for a 6 yard loss. Good news, I held on to the ball. Wheeler back to punt again. I'm going to kill him. His 29 yard punt is caught by the returner at the LSU 45. The returner signalled for a fair catch. 7:21 left in the game. UT 21, LSU 7.

LSU gains a first down on their first play, and then is forced to go for it on 4th and 10 on the Vol 45.
The result? A 45 yard touchdown pass as the ball is tipped into the arms of a receiver already past the defense. 6:13 left in the game. UT 21, LSU 14.
