Spoiler first. Better to assume it's a spoiler than to just go with it and not. And, also, those were spoilers, I don't see how you could think otherwise.

I think he's saying that people who haven't read the books have absolutely no clue who we were talking about. I doubt they'll remember it 2-3 years later .

but it would be a spoiler in that if that person was promised to one person first you would have an idea then that something might happen to the first person

Why is this a debate? If it hasn't happened yet, spoiler it. What's to discuss?

I had the free HBO weekend for Uverse and then 3 months free of HBO so, I can watch the series no.
So good. Don't really care what the rest of you think right now. Maybe 99% of you think it is the equivalent of 'Dude, Where's my Car', but I just went to the last page to put my comments down. I'll reread the thread when I'm done watching the series. My wife will definitely not watch the show. She loves fantasy shows, but she had me watch the 1st episode to see if she might like it. Afterwards I informed her there were several beheadings, incest, a kid shoved out a window and titties. She decided to pass.

Mustang - Think it's safe to say that 99% of us think it's the equivalent of...I dunno...pick whatever other amazing TV series you want.

Just finished episode 10 last night. Loved the entire series, best thing I've seen in a long time.

Mustang - It is not your typical fantasy show. The first few shows feature a bit more exploitation than later episodes, though throughout the series there is a good deal of sexposition. All said, if your wife enjoys fantasy she'd probably enjoy this series which undermines many of the conventions of the genre. I would definitely recommend it to people who enjoy quality television.

I wouldn't think so. I don't see anything spoilerish about that sort of thing. Then again, I am not king of this thread. Though I should be...

One thing I'm interested in is how much this show is about to "change". I'd never read the books (although I'm currently halfway through the first book thank to this series), but the one thing that always sorta bugged me about the Fantasy genre is that it can all get a bit silly and jolly really, with dwarves/elves/dragons/magic etc., and that has always turned me off. I couldn't get more than 100 pages in with Lord of the Rings, for example.
What I love about Game of Thrones the show (and the book) is that it's heavily focused on plot and characters, and while it certainly has it's Fantasy elements, they are really secondary to the rest of the plot. At this stage. Given what we saw in the first and last episodes, and occasionally hinted throughout the rest, leads me to believe that things are going to take a major turn shortly. I hope it doesn't push me away.

Just to make it more clear, the "fantasy" is on the edges. You don't have to worry about it becoming overly super-natural (just on the fringes. It is there, but not the main thrust at all), and every story is primarily character driven (not caricature driven like most fantasy). You should have no worries.

That's, of course, assuming they stay close to the books.

50% of the way through the first book I'm actually pretty amazed exactly how much of the book made it onto the screen.

One thing I was curious about was the omission of Karstark's sons in the Whispering Wood. That was sort of a pretty big deal in the books, and sort of began a few minor plot points.

I'm seriously ticked off that some lucky people in some lucky countries are already reading Dance, thanks to Amazon.
Why can't Amazon accidentally send it to my Kindle? Hmmm? WHY NOT? Bah. Now I'm afraid of going near any websites dedicated to the series for fear of spoilers... ...already accidentally ran across one set of spoilers... |

With how long it's taking me to get through Game of Thrones (mainy because I keep having to reference my printed out "family trees" to remind myself who is who ), I wonder if I'll be up to Dance by the time the following book is out.

Yup. I've even read reports that some stores in Germany are selling now. Amazon Japan has also let some copies go now too...and I've heard that others have claimed to have gotten copies one way or another in other countries. So do be on the lookout for spoilers folks, they're out there. GRRM's Not A Blog post on the subject. And I feel that the 180 number he states (which was before Amazon.jp and others started sending the book on it's way) is very low. Now I'm all paranoid and crap, as I don't want to be spoiled. That's one of the funnest parts about A Song of Ice and Fire...those "HOLY SHIT!" moments and such. I mean, even if you were spoiled beforehand they're still excellent reads, but it's even better if you go in not knowing what happens. |

So just watched episodes 1-10 over the last few days. Not sure I've ever watched a series with as much substance. Think that best sums my feelings. More happens in 2 or 3 episodes than most series cover in a year and all of it is gripping. Every storyline's a hit.
Now I'm just annoyed the first season is only 10 episodes. I'm glad they didn't leave the finale at the last scene of episode 9 though, I think others would have. |

This is exactly how I feel. I think the best part is knowing that - based on what others have said here - the source material is so damn good, it's not like it's going to tail off in the seasons to come like most TV series do. I actually found episode 10 nearly completely unsatisfying, because it was like one massive cock tease. HURRY UP WITH SEASON 2 ALREADY!!!!!!

I think what says the most about how good this series is, is that when just the first book was out, years ago, a friend of mine started telling me how great it was, and we were in a bookstore a bit later and he finally just bought it for me. A book good enough that you want to buy your friends a copy just so they will read it - that's good.
