Wes Welker fucks me over again. Well that and the ridiculous offense in the Green Bay / Pitt game.

Final standings, pre-playoff:

*1. Hawaii Ha'a 11-3-0 .786 2389.76 W-5 8 22
*2. Qwikshots Quivers 10-4-0 .714 2100.78 W-3 9 22
*3. Creeping UDFAs 8-6-0 .571 2283.02 W-2 2 9
*4. Dayton Dynamo 7-7-0 .500 2228.00 L-3 6 29
5. Road Kill Cafe 7-7-0 .500 2188.45 W-1 3 20
6. Richmond Rhinocerii 6-8-0 .429 2101.09 L-2 10 25
7. Fiddly Cartoonists 6-8-0 .429 2081.83 L-3 7 20
8. Enchanted Goats 5-9-0 .357 2080.64 W-2 5 64
9. Eleven Masked Men 5-9-0 .357 1987.75 L-2 1 11
10. Rafini Express 5-9-0 .357 1975.53 L-1 4 25

Any thoughts about 4 vs 6 teams making the playoffs? I kindof like that less than half of the teams make the playoffs so you have to be a pretty good team to make it in, rather than just edging in and possibly getting lucky a couple of weeks in a row towards the end, when things are decided.

Wow, we have quite a Super Bowl folks. The Hawaii Ha'a lead the Creeping UDFAs by only .59 of a point going into Monday night. I have Adrian Peterson, he has the Minnesota defense. Great league, great season, great final match!

Man, that's been a close game all Sunday. Obviously, the odds are with k0ruptr but who knows. Maybe AP gets hurt 2 minutes into the game or the Vikings pull a Jim Caldwell.

Barring Greg Olsen getting about 300 yards and 6 TDs, it looks like I recovered a bit to win 5th place after a disappointing season. My team was playing much better earlier than later but I was in way too big of a hole.

Olsen goes for 11 catches, 120 yards and 3 tds and I win by 0.40, book it!

Yeah, but with Olsen going for 3 TD's that means no points for points allowed.

Congrats, k0ruptr, you had the best team and won. Special mention to Butter as he had the 2nd most points but just had bad luck.

We should be back next year. Any thoughts on rules changes or scoring changes while it's fresh in everyone's mind?

Man, that 5 person bench is short, but with 6, I feel there won't be anything in the pool so I'm leaning towards keeping 5. It's really tough during the bye week weeks, tho.

I think I need to do something to bump RBs up a smidge with all the split carries. They have 3 of the top 5 and 4 of the top 8 but then no others in the top 25. 25-50 is pretty evenly split, so maybe I should just leave it.

Well, I'll do as I have every season and check what the scoring looks like comparing the previous year and other years. I might tweak little things here and there but they'll be announced and set up before we draft. It will be similar to this year: Front Office Football Central - View Single Post - 2009 FOFC Alternate Rules Football; Season Underway! (abstract at the bottom).

If I get some time away from work in the next couple of days, I may dissect it but I'm not optimistic. I'm curious to see how TE/D/K looked this year as I did make quite a few changes to them over previous years.

Great league, and I had a great time even though I faded badly after the first few weeks. Easily the most balanced of any league I played this year, so count me as another vote to "not change much at all". Definitely wouldn't expand the benches as the waiver wire was empty enough.

I'll be in for next year, definitely!

I'm so sad its over. lets do a playoff league somehow

nah but I really think this is a much much much better style then all the RB dominated ff leagues. If SI doesn't mind I'd really like to borrow these rules for a couple extra leagues next season, as I try to turn some of my friends on to this kind of style.

I don't recall where I came up with these rules but I'm sure I copied the base rules from somewhere and have been tweaking ever since.

There are some issues I see with them, but I find those issues to be much less of a problem than with traditional league:

The points are inelegant. They lack that "6 points for a TD, 3 for a FG, 1 for an XP just like in real football!!?!1!" punch. Hell, WR yards are worth more than RB yards. It lacks that numerical purity that I've been chasing for quite a while and will continue to chase. But you basically have to sacrifice that for balance, near as I can tell. And balance is more important.

They are also fractional/decimal based. You could change that but you run across some difficult choices. I have used decimals this year and in the past in two places. The first is PPR. I really like PPR leagues as I like WRs to have two types and not just one. In most leagues, you just go for the burners and pray that this is their week to haul in that 60 yard td. In this format, possession receivers are worth something, too, more than just filler as your 3rd WR. I guess if I wanted to get rid of the fractions there, I can just double values for everything else (i.e. TDs worth 12/10 instead of 6/5) and give 1 point for a reception. Actually, in hashing it out this afternoon- that's sounding like a pretty solid idea (that might be a possible change for next year: eliminate fractional points by bumping up the scale).

The other is defense- fumbles/ints/sacks. Defense is very hard to assign points to. Either you end up with everyone scoring the same- which kindof makes it pointless: why bother drafting if you're essentially just adding 5 points and a luck modifier per defense per week to your score. Or you end up with having to really stratify your defenses as I hope to do. A good defense can help you but a bad one can hurt you or, at the very least, put you in a hole because they scored 3 points to your opponent's good defense's 10. There is a downside to this, however, as individual weekly defensive performances are really dependent on matchups. So, while a good defense might get you more points on the whole, schedule also matters a lot.

Plus, there's the "smaller" matters of what matters most? Points allowed? Picks, fumbles, sacks, and defensive TDs? That's one area I've never really explored.

Then there's the "lump returners in with def or individual players" question. I like to put them in with def, but it can skew values and provides for more regression to the mean with those teams in the middle. Good defense + bad special teams = Bad defense + good special teams. I don't like using return stats for WRs (typically) as they can really skew things. Either you have to neuter them so it adds a couple of points per week to the tune of 100 return yards/point or you end up having the most valuable receiver of 2007 be Devin Hester. I guess I prefer to avoid it altogether.

Oh, and the magical number of people in a league where you start 2 of pretty much everything (except 3 WRs) is 10. Of this I am fairly certain, tho if someone wants to do 8, I'd be curious of the results. I just think it'd be way too shallow. Whereas with 12, it's way too deep as you likely won't even have backup QBs and RBs or even Ds and Ks to start on bye weeks.

Lastly, be warned. If you're playing with a lot of "traditional" players, they will absolutely hate these because it takes them outside of their little box. They can't just go to ESPN or their favorite magazine and draft off that list with 24 picks in the first two rounds with 16 RBs, 4 QBs, and 4 WRs (tho it's not that much harder- you just get lists by positions and separate them into tiers and you watch simultaneously what is going off the board and look for positional scarcity). I have received a ton of resistance from people who even sometimes are statistically inclined- they're willing to talk about WAR or VORP but if you suggest that you start 2 QBs in fantasy football to fairly adjust positional scarcity, you're a crazy man.

I know it's not a big deal, but it bothers me like having 65 teams in the NCAA tournament instead of the numerically perfect 64. I'm a numbers nerd: what can I say?

I was just thinking yesterday about bumping this thread

I'm planning on bringing this league back this year but I'm trying to find a free site with an auction interface because I'm thinking of moving it to some sort of auction format. However, I'm also trying to decide how to reconcile that with the slow/live part of it. So, right now that's just a thought and not really fleshed out.

But, yeah, going to bring this league back but it's going to be this upcoming weekend with the draft starting probably next week. One problem: at work, the go live date for our new project is fast approaching so just as I needed some help in the fantasy baseball league this past year, I'm going to need some help from other owners to stay on top of the draft

One more bump, looks like it will be a too late for a slow draft, but maybe we can do a live draft?

I've run some of the numbers on the stats but I just haven't had a lot of time to sit down and go through the league rules and stats again like I try to do each year.

We have about a month until the season starts (Sept 19). I need to hash out a couple more things tonight and try to have some news out tomorrow.
