The team has already said that Harris is gonna play SAM and they aren't being shy about letting folks know that Cowart is the immediate starter at MLB.

The Bears signed Roberto Garza today. I missed the failed physical with the Ravens, but my impression of Garza is that he's decent. I'm happy to have anyone but Rex Tuckers brokedown body at guard, but this may be more of the same.

Packers also passed on him because he has no ACL in one of his knees.

Well, I guess the upside to that is that he can't tear or strain the ACL on that knee...

I wouldn't be surprised to use the 3-4 in some situations, but I would be surprised if their base D isn't the 4-3. Pat Williams would be a good fit as a 3-4 NT, but Udeze and Kevin Williams wouldn't likely be ideally suited for the 4-3. K.Williams would likely do well as a 3-4 end, but he's much more valuable rushing the passer from the inside. The line was the strength on defense last year, and I think it will continue to be the strongest unit on their defense with Scott, Williams, Williams, and Udeze starting, with Johnstone taking over for Scott in passing situations.

As far as Harris, he was an OLB in college, and will likely end up playing SLB, with Cowart as MLB, and Thomas likely at WLB for now, though if Raonall Smith is able to play he may get a chance to start.

Falcons | Hartwell Agrees to Six-Year Deal - from www.KFFL.com
Mon, 21 Mar 2005 08:12:32 -0800

ESPN.com's Len Pasquarelli reports the Atlanta Falcons have reached a six-year contract agreement with free agent LB Ed Hartwell (Ravens). The deal totals $24.25 million and includes an $8 million signing bonus. There are additional base salary guarantees in the first three seasons of the contract. The deal will pay Hartwell $10 million in its first two years and $13.25 million over the first three seasons.

IIRC, Brooking played the outside last season. Here's what ESPN says:

"Hartwell, 26, has started at inside linebacker in Baltimore's 3-4 front the past three years, but considers himself a pure 4-3 middle 'backer. His addition means that the Falcons will likely have two new starters in 2005. Keith Brooking, a perennial Pro Bowl performer, will likely remain on the weak side. Second-year pro Demorrio Williams, mostly used as a "nickel" linebacker in 2004, is projected as the strongside starter. Hartwell will bump Chris Draft from the middle spot."

Raiders sign FB Rob Konrad to a 1 year deal.

Ravens match the 1 year $3 million offer sheet for RB Chester Taylor.

Travis Henry says he will not return to the Bills.

Not FA related but the NFL has announced the first 3 national televised games.

Oakland at New England Thursday Sept. 8
Indianapolis at Baltimore Sunday Sept. 11
Atlanta at Philadelphia Monday Sept. 12

Oakland/NE should be a very interesting game.

im confused by this signing though. unless im very wrong, i couldve sworn brooking moved back inside because he fit better there than outside. but like i said, the 3-4 must have had something to do with it.

Packers signed OG Matt O'Dwyer to a minimum salary deal. He's been a starter up until last year when he got injured. Overall, he's started 105 NFL games. He checked out health wise and should give GB some additional flexibility at guard.

If you look at the big picture, GB declined to pay over $20 million in SB to resign Wahle and Rivera, instead signing Klemm and O'Dwyer for a combined SB of 825K. This leaves some money to look at filling the holes at LB and safety.

Yes it does... But having some money to spend but nothing to buy isn't all that helpful. I guess it's possible a veteran here or there may shake free post June 1, but it's not all that likely and even if one were, he probably wont be worth the money. I guess they could be looking "down the road" to next year, but so long as you have Favre looking to "next year" doesn't seem all that sound. They should be trying to put together a winning team each year.

Still, saving all that money isn't a bad thing. Both Wahle and Rivera commanded pretty huge contracts.

An honest question: why did the Packers sign O'Dwyer coming off an injury but passed on Garza? Their track record sounds simliar.

Agreed on both points. I'm happy the Packers were able to save a bunch of cap space by letting their guards go, but it would've been nice if they had gotten into the bidding (much) earlier for defensive talent. Given the relative lack of available FA talent, I'm guessing that us Packers fans will have to hope that a change of defensive schemes will work miracles!

Garza had no ACL and didn't pass his physical. O'Dwyer did.

Given GB's new group doesn't like to overpay, I don't know who they really could have added to this point that would given fair value at the positions they need. Their best bet would be to get guys like LB Simmons and/or S Bashir or wait for after June 1. The last thing the Packers needed to do this offseason is overpay for "value" positions like guard, linebacker and safety. If they needed a tackle, QB, DT or CB, then I would agree that they probably missed the boat. But there are always decent LBs and safeties cut after June 1 (assuming they pass on these guys).

I just don't see the reason to get into the bidding for overpaid LBs, guards and safeties. Given the guys that have signed to this point (in GB's budget), I don't know any that would be worth the price for their value. Again, if GB needed an impact position in FA like tackle, QB, DT or CB, they would probably have to pony up. But it doesn't make a lot of sense to overpay at FB, OG, S, or OLB when there are often good players that are cheaper down the line if you wait. Those are also spots fairly easy to replace in the middle rounds of the draft.

I heard Rice on an interview on a local sports talk show, and he said that he would like to play one more year, but he wants to be a #1 or #2 receiver. He said he would be a #3 or #4 only for a team with Super Bowl aspirations. He hinted that no team is meeting this criteria, and that he is likely to retire. However, he is still hoping an opportunity opens up.

David Terrell agreed to terms on a one year contract with the Pats...

Don't know what to make of this, could he be a Belichick find, or this year's Donald Hayes signing for the Pats...

Did the Broncos wait until Dayne signed a 1-day deal with Cleveland before signing him?

Interesting signing. I'm wondering if Shanahan has completely given up on winning games, and is just using the Broncos as a lab for proving that he can take any fuckup off the street and turn him into the next 1,000 yard rusher.

Wow, the most intellectually advanced front office...just signed Terrell!!!

All I can figure is that Brady thinks he and Terrell can hook up just like they did back at Michigan, and it's only a one-year deal, so what the hell...

But this, of course, completely overlooks the fact that Terrell can't run routes or catch. You know, the little things WRs are supposed to be able to do.

Wow.

As founder and co-president of the David Terrell Bandwagon Express, we support the actions of Scott Pioli and the rest of the New England Patriots front office for showing faith in David. It will be re-paid tenfold. David can't be held responsible for the crappy offensive play calling and poorous QBing he was forced to suffer during his time in Chicago. That's a YP not a DP.

49ers signed DE Marques Douglas to a three-year contract.
Douglas was quietly a steady performer in Baltimore, especially for a 3-4 defensive end. He averaged 80 total tackles and five sacks a year during the last two seasons (SF49ers.com)

There really wasn't much doubt, but now it's official! (from Rotoworld)

Steve McNair - QB - Titans
Steve McNair officially announced he's returning to play in 2005.
''I am in good shape, haven't had any problems throwing and expect to participate in some of the minicamps,'' McNair said Friday. This was just a formality at this point. With Drew Bennett as his number one receiver, McNair doesn't quite look like a fantasy starter. He'll still be a fun high risk/high reward QB2.
