Who would have guessed a Western Conference Finals matchup of...
Los Angeles Kings vs. Phoenix Coyotes?

I can't help but think this is Phoenix's year. The franchise's demons have been exorcised by the return of hockey to Winnipeg and they have a goalie who shares the same name as a former Jets GM who made the team even more mediocre than it already was while he made moves in the late 80s and early 90s. GM Mike Smith was a guy who traded the face of the franchise, Dale Hawerchuk. Now goalie Mike Smith is the franchise. It would be good for the league to have LA in the finals, but things seem to be lined up for the Coyotes.

As a Coyote fan, this run has been pretty crazy. I'm not sure they can beat the Kings, but I thought Nashville was going to be tougher as well.

Bryzgalov doesn't make me feel so bad about Fleury anymore.
The hockey Gods hate Philadelphia goaltenders.

Completely fluky, but a bad move by Bryz. Though what Timonen was doing even playing the puck to Bryz in that situation is a head scratcher.

The Flyers are damn fortunate to be down only 2-1 right now. The Devils are completely owning this game so far.

I hope this scorched earth strategy of trying to take out players doesn't extend into the 3rd period. The hit on Zubris was really dangerous and the one on Zidlicki was bang bang sort of, but Wayne Simmonds is somebody who is clearly out there for his physical play and seems to have been lost this series. His offense has disappeared, but every time I turned on the PHI-PIT series, he was starting shit.

I just hope that the Devils don't get suckered into playing like the Flyers. That's what really did the Penguins in. The Penguins tried to mimic the Flyers in Philly, and it made the Pens look stupid. The Devils only have to keep doing what they're doing for 20 more minutes and they win the series. Stay calm, boys!

Congrats Devils fans. They wanted it more than the Flyers did. No answer for the Devils cycle or forecheck. Couldn't break the trap when they reverted to it. It's silly how little work Brodeur had to do in that series.

A Phoenix fan wholeheartedly supports this statement. After seeing Bryzgalov for the past few playoff attempts and then seeing Mike Smith this year - it's like night and day. It's amazing what a good goalie who doesn't choke in the playoffs can do.

i don't see how anyone is putting the series loss on bryz. he may not have been top tier, but he got NO help. and espn is blasting him with quotes like these
Quote:

Was i watching the same series? Sure Bryz didn't steal a game, and was probably at his worst in game 5, but the middle 3 games would have been ridiculous blowouts without his play. pretty unfair, and this is from a devils fan. |

Two players who get a lot more hatred from Philly fans than they deserve are Ilya Bryzgalov and Matt Carle.
Bryz kept the team in games 2-3-4 and made one mistake in game five that cost them the game. However, the team played with no heart or effort through most of the NJ series and certainly didn't give Bryz the help he needed. Blaming the losses on him is silly and unfair. The entire team failed. Whenever Bryz showed up during the season, the team disappeared and vice-versa.

I'll agree he was not necessarily the problem, but much like Fleury, he seems to pick the worst times to do something stupid. And, fair or not, those are going to stand out in people's minds.

Yeah, but the Pittsburgh media loves Fleury so much and seems to absolve him from any blame. Especially Rossi and Rorabaugh. Bryz, meanwhile is chastised by the Philly media at every opportunity.

In Fleury's defense, the 18 months prior to the first round was the absolute best stretch of games he's ever played. He carried that team for most of the 2nd half of last season, and, while not carrying because of Malkin, consistently bailed them out in some other games. The chances the Flyers were getting were nothing new (though more than usual). It was that Fleury wasn't bailing the rest of the team out. It's like he saved up all his bad games for one stretch. For a guy who was regularly pulled about 6-7 starts a year, I think he was only pulled in 2 last season. Right or wrong, Bryz is almost expected to fail - from his personality to his terrible stretch mid-season, I think Philly media is only wondering how long until he blows it. Self fulfilling prophecy. FLeury bought himself enough rope for a bad series, though certainly there are others who think he should be moved this summer, and not the terrible guys in front of him. Neither team was nearly good enough defensively to go very far, and that ended up being the case.

Look at Bryzgalov's last 2 years in Phoenix - regular season and postseason:
09-10: season - 2.29 GAA, .920 save % post - 3.43 GAA, .906 save % 10-11: season - 2.48 GAA, .921 save % post - 4.46 GAA, .879 save % So, are people really surprised he put up these numbers in Philly? season - 2.48 GAA, .910 save % post - 3.46 GAA, .887 save % It's what he does... |

If you look at this playoff history before 2009, the numbers tell a very different story. His playoff numbers were stronger than his regular season numbers. 2006-2007 season - 2.47 GAA, .907 sv.% post -2.25 GAA, .922 sv.% 2005-2006 season - 2.51 GAA, .910 sv.% post -1.46 GAA, .944 sv.% But after watching him in the prior two series, both against Detroit, I never had much confidence that he would be a money goaltender in the playoffs. At least not any more. Still, he wasn't the problem in Philly against New Jersey. He wasn't a rock, but the team in front of him just didn't do enough which made his errors all the more glaring.

Yeah, he was better in Anaheim, but his recent form has not been great in the postseason. In the last two seasons, he let in a few soft goals and never really held firm when the team needed him. This year, he didn't have as many soft goals, but for the money he makes he should have been able to carry the team better through tougher games.
At the end of the day, I wouldn't want him as a playoff goalie. He just seems to lack confidence at times. |

I hope no one views this as not giving credit to the Caps, cause they're playing a great game, but this an abysmal effort from the Rangers...easily one of the worst of the season. So infuriating.
And there's a goal. Above still stands. |

Popeye's son is a good one. Has a chance to be #1 next year. Most are saying he took the money to go to Major-Junior, but who can blame him?

No doubt. Chance to the #1 pick, you have to go major junior. Had never heard of him until today (I don't really follow hockey recruiting), so totally interested to see how he does in Portland. Cool to see an American prospect so bandied about.

Devils a shoe-in?
The last 3 seasons, the team that eliminated the Flyers has gone won the Cup - 09 Penguins, 10 Blackhawks, 11 Bruins. Also, this is the 3rd time the Devils have eliminated the Flyers from the playoffs. The prior two - 1995 and 2000, both NJ Cup years

Seth Jones was supposed to be a Silvertip! We've been waiting for years to see if he would pick the WHL over college, only to have him say that he wouldn't play for Everett. If only we could have had Ryan Murray and Seth Jones lined up together... But now he is the enemy!
