Interstellar - 8/10
Finally watched this and thought it was another clever story that fits together once you connect all of the dots. My main beef and the sole reason the score was not higher is that I think casting Matthew McConaughey as the lead was a terrible choice. Half of the time you could not hear/understand what he was saying, as well as I felt he was quite wrong for that role. He is much suited for something like Mud but not for a space drama epic.

You're right, it wasn't ambiguous.. I was angry about it though. Right before the credits rolled I was like "If that's the ending I'm gonna lose my shit". And then the credits rolled. I'm still a little bitter over it.

Really enjoyed it. Matt Damon was great. Only issue is that I'm having a lot of trouble wrapping my head around the fact it was supposedly based on a true story.

It was fantastic. It really captured the spirit of the book very, very well. Are you sure about this based on a true story thing? I don't recall that.

Yeah, unless the Martian was somehow based on some deserted island type rescue, not sure how it could be based on a true story. I think that might be confusing it with based on a book.

Inside/Out - 10/10

Finally watched it with my kid. Wow, that was a spectacular movie. I thought it got dusty at the end of WALL-E or Toy Story 3... Wow. It was such a creative way of getting everything right about family and adolescence. I'm sure it won't win best picture, but it was one of the most complete movies I've seen in a long time. I was shocked my daughter was engaged as she was for as depressing the movie got at times.

To be honest, I think that was the awesome part of Gone Girl. I love it when movies have an ending which is 'unrewarding' - I appreciate the ballsiness (though in this case, it was the book writer with the balls originally).

I think it depends on the movie. I think the mistake here is confusing "bad guys win" versus "unrewarding". There have been bad guys win movies where the ending was still rewarding. The ballsiness for instance may have made the end of Gone Girls rewarding for you, but Julio and I might feel different (for whatever reason).

I guess it's a beauty is in the eye of the beholder sorta thing?

I mean, I get the ending, but I just hate it when a movie spends all this time making you really hate someone and then they suffer zero consequences. The whole thing is like someone poking you repeatedly while you're tied up, saying "What are you gonna do about it?" and that sucks to me. I don't mind a "feel bad" movie or a bad guys win ending, in fact I am a big proponent of the bad guys winning when the circumstances call for it, but in Gone Girl, that woman didn't deserve a win. She wasn't clever or smart, she didn't have any redeeming qualities. I could have forgiven the plot holes and the incredibly foolhardy actions of all the main characters if it paid off in the end, but when it didn't I was just mad. When someone is that sloppy and that myopic in their quest to break someone (or multiple people) down, they deserve to be outed for the liar they are.. Especially when there is so much evidence of it (which was conveniently ignored).

I can understand liking it, but personally I need the bad guy to be incredibly smart in order to win in the end like this. I don't want to look back at the events of the film and say "Well why didn't they just do this?" especially when there are multiple instances where the antagonist made glaring mistakes.

Who says you have to deserve a win to get it? A lot of the film is about how the media is ridiculously sucky in these tawdry cases. Having the same media expose the 'truth' is less satisfying, if you will, than it never really coming out in the first place.

I don't know that some of these "bad guy" films are good examples.

They may be bad guys in the sense that they're doing bad things to achieve their aims, but they are still protagonists from the story perspective. In Ocean's Eleven, we're clearly rooting for "the bad guys", so when they win, it's much more analogous to a normal movie where the good guys win. In other words, "the good guys" is whomever the movie has devised for us to root for.

Usual Suspects is an interesting case. The movie leads us to support Verbal. He is the man with the handicap swept into a criminal escapade and being browbeaten by a domineering detective. He is the guy who barely escaped the criminal world's devil incarnate while a member of a crew we were rooting for (our "good guys"/protagonists). So technically it's true that the way that twisted, we would have the right to be upset at the ending, as the bad guy, the devil incarnate, won. But I don't think anyone is upset at how that one ended because it was so completely awesome and well done and Kevin Spacey was amazing in his role.

Just to bring the discussion back to Gone Girl, we were never rooting for the wife once it became clear that she had orchestrated everything (about halfway through the movie). And although we may have disliked Affleck's character, he was definitely the protagonist. So the bad girl definitely won there.

Yeah, that one was unsettling, but no big shock, coming from the Coen Brothers. That is a good example.

I think she displayed some excellent crisis handling abilities, but more often than not, her on the cuff decisions (trusting those kids at the trailer park, calling her ex) were terribly made. So she was badass and stupid at the same time.

Sugar (or however you say his name) was always in complete control and knew what he was doing (frighteningly). That and his unswerving loyalty to his twisted ideals made him fascinating, but the wife in Gone Girl was really just conniving (though very intelligent and willful) and quite abit fortunate.

Yeah, but while the book did a great job of describing all of that I don't feel like the movie did. There were a whole lot of explanations of what and how he was doing things that were left out. I know that they didn't have the time for that much exposition the movie, but I wish they had.

The Peanuts Movie - 10/10

It had all the elements of the comic strip and tv specials we grew up to and loved. And a storyline that engages even the most fidgety of 4-year-olds. It kept my wife and me laughing and smiling throughout, and my daughter applauding at the end.

Spectre - 6.5/10

Very torn on this movie...it felt largely like a cardboard cutout of a James Bond film: basic, boring plot that goes everywhere it's supposed to go because that's what a Bond film is. There were parts I really enjoyed - for example, there were some scenes near the end of the movie that I thought were a nice homage to the old school Bond villain days without being too over the top/contrived - but generally speaking, there was nothing great here. Outside of two or three one-liners, the dialogue was not very witty, the action sequences were fairly pedestrian and the story wavered between plodding development and super rushed moments.

Skyfall is a really, really tough act to follow, so perhaps that's what is bugging me? I'm not sure. I didn't hate the movie, but it just didn't do anything at all to wow me.

Walked out of the theatre thinking the exact same thing. Good, fun, movie, but no real wow. Parts were even boring. Frankly, it felt a bit elegiac, end-of-an-era kind of movie. Like it's the last Bond (and maybe it is Craig's last).

I think part of the problem is that there's a hole where the villain is supposed to be. Waltz' character is nowhere near as worrying as Le Chiffre, Mr. White (in Casino Royale) or whatever Bardem's character was called. So he'll have control over all the world's surveillance? That's supposed to worry me, in this day and age? Honestly I'd be happier knowing an evil mastermind had control over the world's surveillance rather than some government agency: at least I'd know his intentions were clear.

And in addition his backstory was so thin. So he became a sociopath because his father bonded with the adopted young James? All that did was inspire pity, not fear.

Someone in a review said that this is the first film they have seen where Bateman really seems like he is playing a character and not just being Jason Bateman. I have to agree with that. A wild ride all the way through, very tense, very tightly written. Great ending.

I am actually working on my early top ten list for 2015, but this one might be at the top. I haven't decided yet.

Tangerine 8/10 - I give this an 8/10 because I don't think its appeal would be that broad, but this is a film that was made entirely in an iphone apparently, and there's no way I would have believed that based on how it looked. It is about a Transsexual call girl who spends the day searching for her pimp who has apparently been cheating on her.. While it was funny, it was also gritty and realistic and authentic feeling. I don't think I have really seen anything like it, and I would recommend it to adventurous types who are interested in stuff that is off the beaten path. It takes a little bit to really get into things, but its worth a watch.

Top Five 9/10. Chris Rock really knocks it out of the park with a very specific POV story with almost no fat whatsoever.

Transformers 4 3/10. Story was a mess. wahlberg did ok with what he had. Japanese Robot was racist as fuck and made no sense at all. Giving it 1 point for Optimus riding a TRex.

Wolf of Wall Street 7/10. Way too long. Basically Goodfellas with stocks, or a slightly better version of Boiler Room.

In A World 8/10. Lake Bell comedy about VO artists. I thought it had some great performances on a small scale picture.

Jack Ryan:Shadow Recruit-7/10. Wasn't expecting much but I was pleasantly surprised.

While everyone is packing theatres for Star Wars(i dont even know if it's out yet) I went to see Room today.

It take over first place on my very premature top movies of 2015 list.

It's a never boring, emotional rollercoaster. It's really a moving story, that I've never really seen anything like before. Brie Larson was excellent. From her first scene, she was able to convey her character without saying a word. Wonderful job. The kid was excellent aswell. He had some pretty impressive scenes where he had to carry it.

Recommended to all.

The Revenant: 9/10 - This one was formulaic enough, but in the same way that Mad Max was just a better action movie than just about anything else in the genre, The Revenant just does revenge better than almost anything else in the genre. The bear attack scene was incredible. The visuals were some of the best I have seen in any movie, period. It wasn't anything groundbreaking from a story standpoint, but it wasn't badly written and the action was so visceral I could feel it. I audibly reacted to stuff at least 5 or 6 times without intending to.

The Big Short: 8/10 - I loved the way this film was done, and it did seem to have some of the feel of other major wall street releases recently, but the faux documentary style was interesting, the cameos were generally interesting and informative, and the story behind it all was very engrossing. I laughed, I got angry, I laughed, I got angry. Great characters in this one.

Spotlight: 9/10 - This felt so similar to All The Presidents Men but was a completely different story. The story itself makes me sick to think about, the scope of it is insane. The movie was excellent though. Really makes one wonder how a person can reconcile their faith in light of such damning circumstances.

The Hateful Eight: 9/10 - Classic Tarantino, and the ending was unexpected for me. At the beginning we thought this would go one way, but it totally didn't, and I love a movie that can do that. Throw in the typically strong Tarantino dialogue and this is something fans of his should really enjoy. Some slight parallels to Django Unchained.

The Peanuts Movie: 9/10 - This movie was the perfect way to bring the Peanuts gang into the present. It might as well have been written by Schulz himself, pure feel good bubblegum animation that both recalled fond memories for me and created new ones for my son.

Still need to watch Anomalisa, Room, Creed, Sicario, and a few others, but I might try and assemble a top 10 after that.
