Casino Royale - We were bored, and for some reason it was still playing. It was awesome - I enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would, given that I think of Bond as "suave" and "elegant", and Daniel Craig didn't particularly look the part.

Munich - Has some very good, very tense moments and overall the acting is solid, but I just found the last half boring, and the last 1/2 or so was just a little too bang-you-over-the-head obvious with imagery. Speilberg is just too neat and clean sometimes, and i think it often hurts the movie. In the end I found this to be a very, very average movie.
3 of 5 stars, thoroughly average, slight thumbs up.

It has been so long since I've seen a movie, I didn't realize until I saw a commercial last night that there had been a Jurassic Park III.
 Speaking of movies that came out a while ago that I haven't seen, what's the general consensus on Elizabethtown? I assume it's the typical chick flick, but I hope it's at least entertaining. I'll be seeing it soon since we just found out that most of it was filmed not in Elizabethtown, but where we live in Versailles. That will make it mildly interesting in and of itself, but I hope the movie is decent. Same with Dreamer, which was filmed all around Lexington. That was a decent movie as well as interesting from a "spot the location" perspective.

That's his complete list of directed films prior to Elizabethtown, and none of those would sit on a list of movies people regretted watching.

The Departed 7/10 I think this movie suffers from Philadelphia/Thin Red Line/ Lost in Traslation syndrome. The critics all gushed over it and everyone told me how good it was going to be and I kept waiting for the moment where I said "Yeah, I can see why this is the runaway favorite for best picture." Had I known nothing about it going in I think I would really enjoyed it more, but I kept waiting for something to really move me or wow me. I am sure there are plenty of movies that don't come near this that I might even rate higher but I remember at the end kind of feeling let down.

A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints - (4.6/10) I recognized Shia LeBouf, Rosario Dawson, Robert Downy, Channing Tatum, and Danny Aiello. I also recognized it really didn't add anything to the street hoodlum who wants to get out of New York genre. It was like a homeless man's Sleepers. |

Stranger Than Fiction (2006)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0420223/ 3 of 5 stars, thumbs up Very entertaining movie, definitely something i'd rank in the "pleasant surprise" category. Will Farrell was pretty solid in a mostly serious role. There is definite hope for him having a crossover career in the style of Jim Carrey. He'll still be a predominantly comedic actor, but he can play serious believably. I was mostly happy to see that the Queen Latifah character was pretty understated and not as big a part as the original trailer had led me to believe. I'm was also happy that the Maggie Gyllenhaal character was believeable enough, and again not as over-the-top as the original trailer had led me to believe. I enjoyed the script, and thought it made for a pretty unique film. I'll definitely at least look into what the next writer's project is. Zach Helm is the writer I speak of... it was his first movie. Overall I was pretty surprised at the relative degree of sublety in the movie... the trailer had led me to believe otherwise months back.

Bridge to Terabithia - 7.5/10 This movie is not at all like it appears in the previews. It is not a fantasy movie, and it is not a new Narnia-type movie. This is a coming of age movie which highlights the power of imagination and friendship. I was pleasently surprised by this movie. It evoked a lot of different emotions and was generally well done. AnnaSophia Robb is going to need to find some time for acting lessons as she grows up, but she does do cute very well. |

Zodiac - 8/10: Definately not your normal serial killer movie; if you know the real life story, you know what I'm talking about. But a wonderfully acted and plotted movie nonetheless. It really isn't a movie about a serial killer, but more of the obsession that the characters have in trying to solve the mystery and the downward spiral that occurs as a result (especially with Greysmith).
Also amazingly casted. Even some of the most minor parts are played by a fairly well known actor/actress. It was incredibly how they could get such talent for so little parts.

Flyboys (6.5/10) Okay, I'm a huge WW1 airplane fan, and did not see this in theatre after reading the absolutely dreadful reviews it got. Saw it on DVD with very low expectations, and was pleasantly surprised. Not a bad movie at all. Not great by any means, but the critics were unfairly harsh with it. Certainly worth watching, and I personally bought it.

Yamato (6.5/10) Nicely done movie. The special effects have been seen better, but the story is very good.
Flags of our Fathers (6/10) Ok movie, but a little long. Letters from Iwo Jima (8/10) Very good movie. More action than in Flags. There has been a lot of war movies with an american point of view, so it is nice to se the other side of it.

American Dreamz (2/10) Just not that funny to me, and i tend to really enjoy hugh grant and mandy moore. It had potential, but the constant bush jokes and gay jokes just ruined it for me. It simply wasnt funny.
Ricky Bobby, Talladega Nights (5/10) I love ferrell, in supporting roles. When hes a leading actor i tend to be dissapointed. Most of the movie was pretty boring to me, and the only scene salvaging this score was in the hospital. Other then that, yawn.

Stranger Than Fiction - 7.3/10 - Enjoyed it a bit more than I thought I would. Ferrell was able to carry the heavier scenes solidly, and Maggie G was absolutely lovely, made me forget all about the Sherrybaby debacle (now only if she could get nude in a good movie... and no, Secretary is not a good movie). Little Miss Sunshine - 4.6/10 - Boring. What was so different about this movie that was unlike all the other quirky family indie type movies? This Movie is Not Yet Rated - 3.2/10 - It was nice to see the MPAA get called out, but I guess I'm just not a documentary type person. The Heart of the Game - 4.7/10 - An OK movie. Took dedication to follow the girls team around for 6 years. Tenacious D and the Pick of Destiny - 6.5/10 - It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. It was harmless and moderately amusing. If you can handle Jack Black, you'll enjoy the movie. The Holiday - 2.3/10 - Damn, Cameron Diaz looks busted. Kate Winslet is gorgeous as always. Jack Black was good in his limited role, it would be interesting to see what he could do in a movie like this in an expanded role. Otherwise forgettable movie. |

Strange Days - 8.5/10
No idea how I'd never heard of this film before. Good idea, decent if stereotypical characters, and a good if predictable climax. Pan's Labyrinth - 10/10 Said a bit about it in the Pan's Labyrinth thread, and this instantly becomes a favourite movie of mine. Walked in to the cinema with no expectations, and was absolutely blown away. Watch it if you haven't already. Zatoichi - 8/10 The latest one from a few years ago. Very fun movie. Lots of folks weren't happy with Beat Takeshi playing Zatoichi, but I thought he did a great job, and the support characters were all pretty solid, especially Tadanobu Asano as Hattori Genosuke. Laputa: Castle in the Sky - 6.5/10 Pretty uneven effort compared with other Studio Ghibli classics IMO. Had some really great things about it, but also dragged in places. Scores lower than it probably deserves because of how much I've enjoyed the other Ghibli releases like Mononoke/Pom Poko/Totoro/et al.

I think it's best that he decided to leave his unique/bizzare sense of social commentary aside for a film. Clive Owen continues to impress me and turns in another solid performance. Jodie Foster is good, Denzel Washington continues to be OK at playing the same character over and over again. Nice, solid but unspectacular drama/thriller. edit: and Chiwetel Ejiofor needs to be in more movies. The guy has been perfect in everything I've seen him in.

By coincidence she meets one of the main characters, who agrees to sail her to the place. Maybe I should notch the rating up by a point to 7.5/10. Its worth watching. I hope this makes sense. English is not my first language and I am pretty tired right now

There was nothing funny about the character, really, although it seemed like they were going for laughs with his accent. But when you consider that the funny French accent was done by Peter Sellers 30 years ago to the point of perfection, Cohen didn't come close to eliciting a laugh from me.

Yamato I found it at yesasia.com for only $7.99. The Hong Kong version should have english subs, but I couldn't get the site to work properbly. But try it anyway.
