Go Padres. I want a rematch of the 1984 World Series.

Holy Shit.

Me and my daughter just went nuts.

Should the Mets hold on we are going to at least one of the games next week.

It seems like every year somebody is deserving of some level of the Barry Bonds treatment. We are not letting that guy beat us even if it means sacrificing one run so he does not beat us with more than one run.

Lindor is probably that guy this year.

A guy who works for my wife has a son who is a scout for the Mets and he told her he is going to give us his tickets for at least one of the NLCS games. I'm going to bring my daughter

Does anyone know why the NLCS is on during the afternoon? I enjoy day baseball but it just makes these games feel less important.

I'd assume it's a desire to avoid overlapping games on different networks, plus tomorrow is a travel day for the NL so they can getaway a little earlier this way.

Personally I've loved the return of some day post-season games to the schedule, a nostalgic thing for me that I've lamented for years

Anecdotally, it feels like many baseball fans do as well. Yesterday was definitely a rough one for the West Coast folks. Ideally you would have the game on the East Coast on during the day on the East Coast and then the West Coast game during the day on the West Coast. But it's the Yankees, New York etc.

Now that I no longer have cable and channel numbers, and I just click on a streaming app to watch stuff, sometimes I'm unaware of what channel I'm even watching.

So it didn't occur to me until I saw something on social media about it, that baseball is such a niche sport now that the LA Dodgers and NY Mets played a primetime game last night on FS1 while Fox aired The Masked Fucking Singer. Absurd, but it is what it is, I guess. Money/ratings don't lie.

That's actually (I suspect) more about propping up numbers for FS1.

That game drew roughly 4x the total audience of Masked Singer (which is down considerably from where it peaked)

Plus, when they made the TV schedules/deals, they couldn't count on getting NY vs LA. I doubt STL vs MIL would have drawn as well.

MLB says that game 5 of the NLDS between the Dodgers and Padres had 12.9 million viewers in Japan.

Average Viewership
• America: 7.5M
• Japan: 12.9M

That means that 10% of Japan's entire population watched the game at 9 a.m. on a Saturday.

Took my daughter to the Mets game tonight and man what a time we had. The place was crazy and we definitely made a lifelong memory as it was her first MLB game. Her 2 favorite players are Ohtani and Alonso and when Polar Bear went yard she went crazy.

Imagine being told at the beginning of June that you'd be taking your daughter to her first MLB game and it's game 5 of the NLCS with the Mets at home against the Dodgers.

It sounds like it was an amazing experience.

I assume players don't feel great when someone other than themselves and glances at their bank account can heal many ill feelings. Despite that, I would love to see and hear Mike Trout on truth serum watching Shohei celebrate a pennant. I don't even think there would be any bitterness towards Shohei. Just thoughts of what could have been.

Never in a million years and I wouldn’t trade it for anything. She must have been inspired because she led her tournament team to a championship on Sunday hitting two home runs and catching all seven innings of the championship game winning tournament MVP in the process.

They still doing ridiculous numbers of games at that age, or has it been pared back some? I can remember one particular run to a title game when Caitlin was 12 where they played 7 Sunday games (time-limited to 75 minutes) to come out of the double elimination bracket - only to lose the championship game due to lack of pitching of course. Started at 8am, finished at like 10:30pm as I recall.

Thankfully we only played 3 games with a bye into the finals so four max. Seven games is insane.

I know people are upset about a Yankees-Dodgers World Series but you can't really ask for a better matchup. Huge stars on both teams, two giant markets, should be a lot of fun.

Eh, if you don't have a horse in the race, that's about as classic of a matchup as you can get.

Yeah, not pissed about it. Like I told my wife (who doesn't care about a game if she doesn't have a rooting interest), I don't have to stress about the game so I can basically just enjoy watching it as a game. I mean, I still want the NYY to eat shit and I'm not really that keen on LA either, but I won't get all that worked up about it.

Interesting side discussion - who would everyone consider to be the most high profile matchup in each of the four major sports (while remaining realistic with the league alignments - so, has to be AFC vs NFC or AL vs NL).

I'd say:
MLB: Yankees vs Dodgers
NBA: Celtics vs Lakers (this is the easiest for me)
NFL: this one is kind of hard, because it is hard for me to put the Patriots and Chiefs into context with them both having dynasties. I'd maybe say Packers or Cowboys in the NFC vs one of the Steelers/Raiders/Chiefs/Pats
NHL: no idea here because it seems like the most historic franchises are all in the East - maybe Canadiens vs Blackhawks

To answer the initial question, the Celtic-Lakers have met 12 times in the NBA championship. This will be the 13th Dodgers-Yankee World Series. It looks like the Canadiens-Maple Leafs hold the major professional record for meetings in a championship with 15.

Dodgers legendary pitcher Fernando Valenzuela dies at 63 - ESPN

Damn, makes me sad. He fits into a good chunk of my main baseball fandom era, and is really a guy who I associate a lot of real-time baseball memories with my grandfather with.

Rest in peace.

NFL is probably Steelers/Cowboys historically since they've met across multiple eras. NHL system has always encouraged in division rivalries to be the fiercest, and their historical re-alignment throws a wrench in it. You've got something like Leafs/Canadiens that historically have matched up in finals but now can't, or teams like Red Wings/Blackhawks or Red Wings/Avalanche that can match up in a final but have all the bad blood from when they were in the West together. Maybe DGB can weigh in (or already has an article about that somewhere!)

I feel like anyone who is/was upset are just reacting instinctively. It is kinda hard to be pissed about the Yankees and Dodgers buying World Series appearances and titles when the Yankees have won 1 and appeared in 2 World Series and the Dodgers have won 1 and appeared in 3 in the last twenty years.

Well, Game 1 delivered.

Deja vu with a gimpy Dodger hitting a walk-off HR.

"The blind soldier fought for me in this war. The least I can do now is fight for him. I have eyes. He hasn’t. I have a voice on the radio, he hasn’t. I was born a white man. And until a colored man is a full citizen, like me, I haven’t the leisure to enjoy the freedom that colored man risked his life to maintain for me. I don’t own what I have until he owns an equal share of it. Until somebody beats me and blinds me, I am in his debt."- Orson Welles August 11, 1946

This has been a very good series. It's much better that we're up 2-0, but the games have been on point. Last night was one for the history books. Tonight kept the momentum up.
