I blunder early by ending a turn without realizing they had an opening for a Cannon Shot. They immediately take advantage and take an early lead. I take advantage of their Keeper's low control and have Eller send in a cross that Hoffman heads home for the equalizer. We earn a direct free kick from just outside the penalty area. Instead of having Cannon take it, I get the ball to Burroughs for another cross and Hoffman scores another header for the winner.

Final: Des Moines 2, Portland 1
Goal: Hoffman 2
Top Three: Hoffman, Burroughs, Guy

Godwin - lvl 34

They don't play with wing forwards, which allows me to have a much more aggressive midfield lineup. Because of this, we're able to control 67% of the possession. We get the ball to Cannon twice for Rainbow Feints and he's successful both times. Leon manages three shots on goal, but none of them get to Pressley

Final: Des Moines 2, Leon 0
Goal: Cannon 2

Eller does Hoffman's hold trick by dribbling behind the defense and earning penalty. He converts it, giving us a lead 4 minutes in. 22 minutes later, a counterattack finds Cannon in front of the goal for an easy Rainbow Feint. I sub Cannon out, but Eller is able to add another goal by earning yet another penalty. Chicago earned a direct free kick late, but we were able to defend it.

Final: Des Moines 3, Chicago 0
Goal: Eller 2, Cannon
Top Three: Eller, Goode, Swan

What a run you're on. That defense is truly impregnable to all but the most lucky or highly skilled forwards. Add Cannon's scoring to that and you have the run that you're on.

We get our youngster Epperson involved early, as he executes a Cannon Shot 10 minutes in to give us the lead. Cannon would add two more goals before halftime and sit for the rest of the game. We tried to get Hoffman involved on some headers. We weren't successful, but did tie up much of the playing time in their end of the field. They did manage to take one back on a one on one opportunity in the 80th minute, but there was no hope of a comeback.

Final: Des Moines 3, Swope 1
Goal: Cannon 2, Epperson
Top Three: Cannon, Shepard, Hoffman

Cardenas - lvl 74

A win here clinches the group win, which would be nice so I can play young guys in the remaining two group matches. Cannon scores on a Rainbow Feint 12 minutes in. Then Eller gets in position for a Cannon Shot just before halftime, which he hits despite an Fullback harassing him. We struggle to add goals in the 2nd half, but two goals would be enough. Sao Paolo scores a meaningless one on the last turn of the match.

Final: Des Moines 2, Sao Paolo 1
Goal: Cannon, Eller
Top Three: Eller, Cardenas, Cannon

Kirkland - lvl 52
Shepard - lvl 57
Godwin - lvl 35

It's funny, because I really wasn't that enamored with Cannon when I first pulled him...

Quote:
*My youth pull is a lvl 20 Amateur Forward named Cannon. Lvl 20 is the very worst I could get from the academy, but he does come with Rainbow Feint, which could prove useful.

For most young players it's about time, coaching and time but mostly time. I've especially learning this in my current run through where I haven't allowed a single purchase transfer. Every time I get a youth pull they're getting trained (also for me there is no more important coach than the bench coach. )

Right now my best Central Defender was a Middie youth and still shows up as yellow when he's on the bench and for a while my best keeper was a youth pull I got as a defender who I had to cross-train before my old keeper had to get sold. All youth is good youth at least for my current team no matter what they look like when I first get them.

Cannon scores on two Rainbow Feints within the first 32 minutes and that's all we'd need. We control 67% of the possession battle. I try to get Eller involved in the 2nd half, but no luck. I may try to retrain him as a CF to see if he'll get more opportunity for his lvl 3 Cannon Shot that way.

Final: Des Moines 2, Houston 0
Goal: Cannon 2
Top Three: Cannon, Burroughs, Goode

I decide to have a little fun in this one and put Guy at Forward so we can use his lvl 3 Head Play talent to score a goal. However, it's Hoffman who scores a header to give us the lead 22 minutes in. Just after the half, Cannon scores on a Rainbow Feint. Finally, with time running out, we get one last chance at a cross and Guy sends it through for his first career goal.

Final: Des Moines 3, Columbus 0
Goal: Hoffman, Cannon, Guy
Top Three: Hoffman, Burroughs, Pressley

With a lvl 2 Reaction Keeper, Cannon's Rainbow Feint is not so strong. And they manage to shut him and Epperson down for the 1st half. Cannon finally manages to get on the board int he 56th minute. I try to get Epperson involved, but he misses his two chances. Still, P-Alegre's 3 shots don't really challenge us.

Looking to go perfect in the group stage, but we have some difficulties in the 1st half. We miss on 3 consecutive long passes to Cannon. Leon keeps testing our defensive line and comes close to creating a gap. We finally get the ball to Cannon at the 64 minute mark and he puts us ahead with a Rainbow Feint. We survive some scary shots down the stretcgh to preserve the victory.

I got a little too cute in this one, trying to get Guy another goal. It works, but Columbus earns two penalties and converts both of them. I put Cannon in at halftime, but we can't get the ball to him and Columbus adds another goal on a Cannon Shot after a corner kick. Luckily, we had enough of an advantage in the 1st leg to advance.

Final: Des Moines 1 (4), Columbus 3 (3)

It's a snowy field, which reduces the ability to perform special skills. That's the advantage of having lvl 2/3 skills, because you get multiple chances to succeed. So Cannon scores on a Rainbow Feint 12 minutes in. Then he hits a regular precision shot at the 40 minute mark. I put Hoffman in at halftime and he does his old trick of dribbling behind the defense and earning a penalty. Epperson adds to the damage by successfully executing a Cannon Shot. KC kept trying to shoot on Guy and he owned them.

Final: Des Moines 4, Sporting Kansas City 0
Goal: Cannon 2, Hoffman, Epperson
Top Three: Cannon, Metzger, Shepard

Guy - lvl 89
Swan - lvl 85
Shepard - lvl 58
Epperson - lvl 30

They position fullbacks in a way that makes it difficult for us to use skills. So I just have Cannon fire away with regular precision shots. He scores twice on these and we close the 1st half of the season by easily advancing to the quarterfinals.

Final: Des Moines 2, Sporting Kansas City 0
Goal: Cannon 2
Top Three: Cannon, Burroughs, Guy

Culver - lvl 58

I'd say this is a pretty good start to the season.

We've almost scored as many goals as we did in the entirety of last season.

Winter Break update...

*Youth pull is a lvl 29 CD named Beauchamp. Not a bad lvl to pull, but I don't like his pt distribution or his skill selections.

*I have now fully upgraded my Bench Coach.

*We have 40,222 fans and a 10,000 seat stadium, so I finally pay the $10 million to upgrade our stadium to 20,000 seats. Still not enough.

*Waiting on the other decisions until later in the transfer window.

*I'm left with $1.7 million.

A bit of a sluggish performance against a First League team. Cannon gets denied on all three rolls in his first attempt at a Rainbow Feint. We finally break through right before the half when Cannon beats the Keeper from just outside the penalty box. We have a hard time getting the ball downfield in time on our counterattacks or properly hitting any of our crossing attempts.

Final: Des Moines 1, Louisville 0
Goal: Cannon
Top Three: Shepard, Metzger, Cannon

Goode - lvl 83
Pressley - lvl 62

And our sluggish start to the 2nd half of the season continues. NYC has a lvl 3 Reaction Keeper, forcing us to win with normal shots. Hoffman gets denied in his attempt to dribble by the keeper. After a scoreless 1st half, Cannon finally gets on the board with a normal precision shot. However, NYC is able to equalize when they find their way behind our defensive line and beat Pressley one on one.

Final: Des Moines 1, NYCFC 1
Goal: Cannon
Top Three: Guy, Burroughs, Cannon

For a while it looks like this could be another problematic match. FC Dallas uses 6 defenders with a sweeper and 2 fullbacks that make it hard to use skills without being harassed. Cannon misses a couple precision shots. We finally break through at the 45 minute mark when we take advantage of a missing fullback for Cannon to score. Eller opens the 2nd half by earning and converting a penalty. Then Cannon is able to add another Rainbow Feint in the closing minutes.

Final: Des Moines 3, Dallas 0
Goal: Cannon
Top Three: Swan, Cannon, Shepard

Culver - lvl 59
Cannon - lvl 60

It's a snowy day and our skill usage is once again limited. This makesi t difficult to use Long Pass and execute our counterattack strategy. So we get it to Cannon after the half and he hits a precision shot that beats the Sweeper and Keeper to give us the lead. Then we add to the lead with minutes left when Epperson gets in position and scores on a Cannon Shot.

Another snowy day and we have another match in 2 days. I try to give Cannon a day off, but Edmondson and Hoffman can't hit any headers and it's a little dicey as we head to the 2nd half. We only have a 1-0 aggregate lead and I certainly don't want this to go to penalties. So I put Cannon in the game and he scores on a Power Shot in the 74th minute to give us the cushion we needed. Louisville takes one back, but it's a meaningless goal.

Final: Des Moines 1 (2), Louisville 1 (1)
Goal: Cannon

NY Red Bulls (9-4-7, 6th) at Des Moines Menace (17-2-1, 1st)

The Red Bulls play 4 defenders sitting right in front of the box, making it difficult to get Cannon in position for a Rainbow Feint. The best we can do is to try to get close for normal shots, but Cannon misses the couple he gets. We also fail to win position on a corner. NY takes the lead 32 minutes in on a Power Shot that gets by Pressley. We try desperately to find that equalizer, but keep running out of actions and suffer our 2nd defeat of the season.

Final: New York 1, Des Moines 0
Goal:
Top Three: Strong, Cardenas, Culver

Eller - lvl 63

*I renew Culver for 1 yr, $446,825

*I renew Godwin, my GK of the future, for 3 yrs, $150,969.

*Bought a couple cheap young Forwards - Belanger, Greene - who are training Rainbow Feint and Cannon Shot. I will make them FW's and train them up over time.

And another bizarre match where we just can't seem to get nothing going. Eller misses all three rolls on a Cannon Shot, Guy misses multiple tackles, we lose every positioning battle on a corner kick. Nothing we do works in this one. Luckily, Seattle can't get anything going either and we still have a comfortable lead in league play.

We finally get back in the win column, but our offense is still in a slump. Cannon scores on a Rainbow Feint at the 16 minute mark, but then gets denied on 5 more shots. Sporting KC wins several corners, taking up much of the time, but we defend all of them.

Well, there's the offense we've been looking for. Cannon scores on two Rainbow Feints in the first 36 minutes. Then I decide to get Edmondson involved since Portland's keeper is terrible at stopping headers. Edmondson proceeds to score on headers in the 45th, 50th, and 56th minutes. Then Hoffman has a header of his own to make this a complete destruction. Portland took one back on a penalty. The bad news is that Shepard got hurt and will miss the rest of the season.

Cannon is a bit exhausted, but I keep him in for the 1st half just in case. Luckily, Eller was able to rise to the occassion with two Cannon Shot goals in the 1st half, allowing me to give Cannon a breather. We're unable to add to our lead int he 2nd half, but none of DC's attacks threaten us.

Final: Des Moines 2, DC 0
Goal: Eller 2
Top Three: Goode, Eller, Pressley

Metzger - lvl 88
Tellez -lvl 62
Beauchamp - lvl 30
Epperson - lvl 32

Cannon nabs another hat trick in leading us to victory. He starts off with a Rainbow Feint, then has to rely on Precision Shots due to Orlando's use of Fullbacks. Epperson gets a couple chances to add to the lead, but the keeper blocks his shots. Orlando and their 35% possession never threaten us.

Final: Des Moines 3, Orlando 0
Goal: Cannon 3
Top Three: Cannon, Burroughs, Metzger

Kirkland - lvl 58
Beauchamp - lvl 32

They beat us last time we played. Despite that, I rest Cannon for the upcoming Continental Cup semifinals. That means I send Edmondson in and move Strong up to send in some crosses. Edmondson scores twice in the 1st half on headers. Montreal comes very close to pulling one back in the 2nd half, winning several corners and one on one opportunities, but Pressley is able to fend them all off.

Final: Des Moines 2, Montreal 0
Goal: Edmondson 2
Top Three: Edmondson, Goode, Pressley

Cardenas - lvl 78
Dewitt - lvl 39
Beauchamp - lvl 33

A rested Cannon opens with a Rainbow Feint. Then we take advantage of their weird defensive positioning to give Eller an opportunity for a Cannon Shot, which he successfully executes. They had 62% possession because I just skipped turns daring them to attack me because I had my offensive players set up.

Final: Des Moines 2, Leon 0

Once again, I rest Cannon to be ready for leg 2 of the semifinals. And it looks like we're headed to a draw, which I'd be fine with since we have a healthy lead in the league title race. However, in the 90th minut, Strong sends in a cross and Edmondson comes up big with a header that beats the Keeper for the win!

Final: Des Moines 1, Columbus 0
Goal: Edmondson
Top Three: Edmondson, Culver, Swan

Pressley - lvl 63
Galvez - lvl 57
Beauchamp - lvl 37

*We have clinched the league title with 6 matches to go and a 19 pt lead.

Leon couldn't handle Cannon and Eller last time and so we go right back to the same strategy. Cannon scores on two Rainbow Feints and Eller finds room for two long range Cannon Shots. Leon takes 3 shots on goal, but none of them get past the defensive line. We're moving on to the finals!

Cannon scores on Rainbow Feints right before the half and right after the half. I try to get Epperson and Eller involved, but we can't get the ball to them in scoring position. Toronto takes 5 shots on goal, all of them harmless.

Final: Des Moines 2, Toronto 0
Goal: Cannon 2

With a 6-1 aggregate lead, it's safe to rest Cannon. We open the match with a header goal from Edmondson. Portland actually equalizes right before the half when they break through the line for a Cannon Shot. However, Eller rises to the occasion and finds a gap to use his Cannon Shot. He succeeds to give us the winner.

Final: Des Moines 2 (8), Portland 1 (2)
Goal: Edmondson, Eller
Top Three: Edmondson, Guy, Strong

Culver - lvl 63
Godwin - lvl 40

Well this was a shocker. We take the lead right before halftime on a fluke shot from Hoffman. They equalize midway through the 2nd on our biggest nemesis - Cannon Shot. Then, with time running down, they take a desperation shot from range. Somehow, Guy and Pressley both fall asleep and let it go in for the winner.

Final: Colorado 2, Des Moines 1
Goal: Hoffman
Top Three: Hoffman, Metzger, Goode

This is a team we've owned lately and this one is no different. Edmondson scores on a Header just 4 minutes in. Eller scored on two Cannon Shots before halftime. Portland manages to stop Cannon in the 2nd half and they take one back, but it was a meaningless goal in the 90th minute.

Final: Des Moines 3, Portland 1
Goal: Eller 2, Edmondson
Top Three: Eller, Guy, Burroughs

A perfect series of events finds us in a 2-0 hole. Trying to get the ball to Cannon in position, Goode's long pass is intercepted on all three rolls. This allows them to counterattack against our compromised line and a Cannon Shot puts them ahead. Then they take advantage of the fact that I forgot to provide CD support against a Nutmeg player. He gets behind the defense and beats Pressley. Cannon takes one back right before the half on a Rainbow Feint, but it takes until 90 minutes when he finds the equalizer on the last action of the match.

Final: Des Moines 2, Chicago 2
Goal: Cannon 2
Top Three: Cannon, Hatton, Goode

National Cup - Final

Toronto FC at Des Moines Menace

We struggle to get any shots on goal until late in the 1st half, when Hoffman is able to win a corner. I use Guy's lvl 3 Head Play and he perfectly connects with the cross and heads the ball through the net for the halftime lead. Fullbacks limit Cannon's ability to use Rainbow Feint, but he just scores the old-fashioned way: a precision shot in a one on one against the Keeper. Toronto wins multiple corners at the end, but we defend them all and repeat as National Cup champions!

Final: Des Moines 2, Toronto 0
Goal: Guy, Cannon
Top Three: Burroughs, Guy, Metzger

I rest the starters in this one and the result is another Edmondson hat trick, all of them coming on headers. Swope manages to take one back in the 2nd half on a Cannon Shot, but they get denied on all future attempts.

Final: Des Moines 3, Swope 0
Goal: Edmondson
Top Three: Edmondson, Dewitt, Kirkland

Godwin - lvl 41

American Cup - Final

La Plata FC at Des Moines Menace

La Plata is probably the toughest team we've ever faced. They're rated 4.5 stars and have a lvl 2 Reaction Keeper, which limits, but does not eliminate Cannon's Rainbow Feint. Both Cannon and Epperson get denied several times in the 1st half. We finally break through in the 40th minute when Cannon successfully executes his Rainbow Feint. It gets a little dicey because we fail to add to this lead and La Plata has the ball on the last turn of the game. Thankfully, their last ditch desperation pass misses the mark and we hold on for the victory. We've won the American Cup!!

Final: Des Moines 1, La Plata 0
Goal: Cannon
Top Three: Burroughs, Cannon, Guy

*Everybody leveled up.

*We won $23 million from our sponsor for winning the Cup. We now have $45 million in the bank.

*I upgrade the Youth Academy. Our pulls will now be in the lvl 30-40 range.

We close our historic season with a terrific performance. Cannon converts aRainbow Feint 12 minutes in. Epperson adds to the lead right before the half on a Cannon Shot. I sub Edmondson in for the 2nd half and he immediately scores on a header. We're able to get Cannon another goal on a Rainbow Feint at the 76th minute. Houston actually takes one back here, using a wing forward to get behind the defense and earn a penalty. Eller comes in and earns a penalty of his own. He converts for our 5th goal (from 4 different players).

Final: Des Moines 5, Houston 1
Goal: Cannon 2, Epperson, Edmondson, Eller
Top Three: Cannon, Burroughs, Metzger

Goode - lvl 87
Hatton - lvl 45

So where to go from here? I'll probably continue this career every now and then, but I won't be doing game by game updates of this anymore. I'll probably still post in here with season-ending updates or if anything else interesting happens.

I'm trying to decide what to do for my next career, whether I do hard mode or try normal mode with house rules.

I'd also like to chase the Steam Achievements. I've accomplished 48 of 70 so far.

*We won the treble again, but it was pretty suspenseful. We had to go to penalties in the finale, but prevailed.

*We have a 45,000 seat stadium and youth pulls are one lvl from being maxed out.

*I used glory to max out Epperson's Cannon Shot so Cannon wouldn't have to do it all on his own.

*Goals:

Cannon - 56
Epperson - 41
Edmondson - 22
Eller - 2
Guy - 2

Dropping this here 'cause it's the closest thing I saw to a thread on F:TnG.

Finished my first season, got promoted, and got my youth pull. He's a 19-year old Level 1. Level 1! Thanks, RNG. The transfer list is all garbage -- older guys with stats in the wrong categories. No wonder they're on the transfer list.

I've had to sell a few of my decent guys in order to extend a few of my other decent guys. So far in League Three, I've gotten a few draws and one undeserved win so maybe I can tank a few games getting young guys experience without getting demoted.

Anyway, it's a game that I'm finding is about as fun as FM without requiring the dedication FM does.
