Not leaving home just yet but the baby boy heading into his senior year.
I must say that senior portraits have gone up a pretty penny since we did this 11 years ago.

Mack is officially a senior and of legal drinking age. Crazy.

Not leaving home, but feel like bragging some. For the class of 2028, my daughter is the 5th ranked swimmer in the state. What's weird is that for all high school aged girls she's #78, and the 4 girls ahead of her for the 2028 class are #1, 8, 9 and 11 overall. And 2 of them have been among her best friends for almost a decade.
I'm super proud since she's only been doing it 2 years and I'm hoping it makes her proud. But it's also weird that 4 of the top 11 swimmers in the state are in her grade... but then it's just upper classmen for the next 66 spots until you get to my kid. Edit, and last night she went head to head in 3 events against the #1 girl for the 2027 class. My daughter beat her in 1 event and was under a second behind in the other 2. Evidently the girl refused to give her a high five after my daughter beat her, which is generally standard for the people next to you. And she bumped my daughter when they were all lining up for relays at the end. Daughter wasnt even mad, just made her feel good she was a threat. Last edited by Ghost Econ : 06-06-2025 at 09:52 AM. |

My son has gotten approval for his apartment in St. Pete. We will officially be empty nest'ers in August. My daughter was 27 when she moved out, and she is still a 5 minute drive away. This is going to hit harder.

Congrats. Yes, it will hit harder. But be glad you've got text messaging vs 80/90's with snail mail. Tampa/St. Pete is a great area. That is a top-5 retirement consideration for me if I could afford the insurance & homeowner's dues. |

St. Paul, Minnesota, not St. Pete. More exact, Woodbury which is right next to St. Paul.
Edit: I fully believe that even though he will be hundreds of miles away, we will see him as much as we see our daughter who lives around the corner. He likes to travel, so he will come down. We are already planning to go up in October, if I can drug my wife enough to get in a plane. Last edited by GrantDawg : 07-12-2025 at 07:31 AM. |

I'd also add, good that he has a job regardless of where it is ... My son found a solid job during 2022 Covid. We were happy he found something pretty stable considering all the BS uncertainty. Last edited by Edward64 : 07-12-2025 at 08:27 AM. |

The truck pulled out this morning. He is flying back next week to get his car, but this was the big move out. We are officially empty-nesters.

I live in St Paul, Woodbury’s a very nice and popular place to live around here. Feel free to PM me if he wants to know anything about the Twin Cities area or Woodbury in particular (two co-workers who I’m close with that live there). My oldest daughter is leaving for college at the end of September. Definitely having the dichotomy experience of 1. Will miss having her around tons and 2. Excited to hear about (a fraction of) her adventures. |

I will soon be joining this bittersweet community. Our oldest is going to App. State this fall. The good news is that it is only three hours away. He really did not want to go that far, and it is not like we wanted him to go that far.
He’s always been a homebody, and he specifically told us that he is not going to be one of those kids who’s going to mind if we visit so considering the mountains and considering that we like seeing him I imagine we’ll be up some. And he’ll be down when he can. I think it’s a good school for him. He is a shy quirky kind of kid and App seems to have a place for quirky kids. We have always enjoyed hanging out as a family so him being gone will definitely change things. Like Jon said at the very beginning of this thread I think it’ll just be less. |

I should update from the first page. #1 is finishing up his first year in a Neuroscience Phd program so he did remember to study. #2 started her career in Marketing but after working for a couple of egomaniacal business owners, she's accepted an elementary school teaching position for next school year. I have a HS classmate that is now a great grandpa but no grand kids are imminent for us ![]() |

#1 is going off to USC in the fall. Of the 13 places he applied to, that was the most expensive lol.
#2 will be a HS sophomore in the fall. My wife has clients in the LA area so will likely see #1 a few times a year out there, which is great. His final choices were between UCSD, UCSB (most gorgeous campus I've ever been to), LMU, and USC. |

FWIW, I think that's a pretty good/fair take on that environment. I know a, umm ... let's say exceptionally quirky (that's polite, right? lol) young man who went there and found his place socially very rapidly and did quite well there. I'd be optimistic about that aspect of things based on what I know of it.

My first two graduate this year. One is going to Boston College and the other to Smith. Both got in their top choice, so very proud of them.

Good to hear. That certainly the aspect of it that I’m most nervous about on his behalf. |
