He doesn't have to believe in democracy, he just has to believe in the spread option.

Someone on twitter suggested they had a big footprint now, so they should be known as the Big Foot.

I like the idea of a North, East, South and West division in basketball. Just cover all your bases. Either that or just trade names with Conference USA.

They just took several of the most recognizable names from that conference, right? Maybe they should.

This last round of expansion has finally killed off the idea of a major conference being accurate with its name. The Big East is in San Diego and Boise. The Big Ten and XII can't count, and the one with the elite research universities hasn't been able to for almost 20 years now. The PAC-12 and ACC both have schools in states that don't touch the oceans in their names (Colorado, Utah, Pitt) and the SEC just invited Missouri, which is "southeastern" only when compared to western Canada.

Missouri was a confederate state during the Civil War. So that makes the SEC name a little less suspect.

Not entirely accurate. They were a border state and while many people from Missouri fought for the Confederacy, almost three times as many fought for the Union.

I know. I live here. I live it every day.

You could have split the state in half. Northern part of the state (I70 north) was Union.
That is St Louis and KC included.
The Southern half was Confederate. Thats how our politics still work today.

There is a 4:00 PM announcement coming from the Big Ten today, no idea what it pertains to. A guy on one of the UM sites works for the BTN called the announcement last week. He is fairly tight lipped otherwise. There is some buzz the conference may move to a 9 game conference schedule quicker than 2017 (which is when it is supposed to happen now). There is also talk that whatever happens, Michigan and Ohio State will no longer play in the last game of the season.

We won't know until four though.

And now some leaks are coming that in 2017 the Big Ten and Pac 12 will do a Big Ten/Pac 12 football challenge.

We'll see.

Nothing is really happening at this point. WVU is going to win in state court and the Big East won in Rhode Island state court. No surprises there. Everyone is just going through the motions until this hits a federal jurisdiction.

People around WVU are still confident that WVU is playing basketball and football in the Big East next season.

BREAKING: Pac-12 and Big Ten enter scheduling agreement. All 12 teams playing an inter-league football game starting 2017.

So now in 2017 the Big Ten expands to a 9 game conference schedule, and adds a Pac 12 opponent to take them to ten games. I can easily see this being the end ND playing a lot of Big Ten schools.

The scheduling should be easy too; the teams with five away games in conference get a Pac team at home and vice versa.

Do you think that's part of a scheme to squeeze ND into joining the conference?

I doubt he'll still be there, but Arizona/Michigan would be a nice first game.

I would be awfully surprised if ND joins the conference if they haven't done so by now. With that being said, if this doesn't push them towards something, then nothing will.

I think both conferences are basically saying that there won't be any new expansion for them anytime soon with this agreement. Crazier things have happened but I would be stunned.

One thing to also consider is the conferences could try and put games on their respective networks to force cable companies hands into putting them on cable. If the Big Ten Network can get traction in California for instance, well why even bother expanding anymore?

Big piece of story: Big Ten will re-evaluate whether to go with nine conference games beginning in 2017. Could be tough now.

One other thing to consider is these are probably the two most influential conferences when you consider money, history, academics, etc. Now that they are working together, does the NCAA start to become less relevant? Say the SEC and ACC partner up next, then the NCAA becomes more irrelevant. It's too early to say it's the end of the NCAA, but we could one day look back at this being the start of it.

Indeed. It really tends to screw with ND's scheduling, well, potentially.

The football seems secondary to all this in all honesty. Both Delaney and Scott have referenced how this is going to be a partnership in football, basketball, promotion and academics. If they can make this work, then wow. It's huge.

That’s my only concern with this. I don’t think there is any way that the Pac-12 can go to 8 games; the northwest schools would have to agree to give up more games in LA which clearly isn’t happening. Which leaves our teams having to win 9 conference games, 1 OOC B1G game, plus the championship game in order to make it to the national championship game, that’s a pretty tough road.

While Pac-12 keeping 9-game league sked, would have been tough for B1G to shift to one and add new scheduling agreement w/ existing series

NBC has a better shot with the rebranded Versus, which starts up at the beginning of the new year.

Fox seems to be staying regional, thus limiting its effectiveness on a national scale. NBC is going for a national profile, and is at least giving it a shot at going head-to-head with ESPN with highlights, etc. I'm going to give them a try just because ESPN needs to be knocked down a peg or three.

I'm surprised this wasn't discussed before now, given the amount of money sucked out by middlemen in the current bowl system. Maybe it required the leagues to own their own networks, meaning all they really need to do is find a stadium to rent.

I'm sure every team will get 9 home games and 1 home Pac 12 team every 2 years, butI wouldn't be shocked to see a team playing 5 away Big Ten games and an road game against a Pac 12 team. I think getting a good matchup for TV will be more important to the conferences than matching up home/away games.
