I'm not buying it. Smith would have been an academic casualty for the Nut Bowl.

Bug, BTW, is referencing a comment by Bryan Fischer that there is only one assistant remaining, and that it is McNair. Don't know how much to read into that.

Tyron Smith was an academic casualty for the bowl game. No idea if he is done at SC or not.

I've heard at least 2 assistants will remain, 1 that Pete wanted and 1 that he didn't offer to come to Seattle. Norton is the question mark. He's probably going with Pete, but the powers are offering him a huge raise to try to keep him.

Yep, along with McCoy and Spicer. I was particularly disappointed in Smith and Spicer.

How weird. I mean, I actually remember McCoy and Spicer, and I remember there were three. My mind must have gone through some sort of block on Smith. I don't even know who I thought it might be instead of Smith.

Agreed. The kids aren't back in school yet. If classes were in session, he would have met with them. Given that they aren't, this is honestly one of the best ways to let them know quickly before news breaks.

In retrospect, I agree with you guys, particularly if Pete meets in person with the team later.

Dude is nuts.

I'm semi-surprised that he hasn't called up Bill Snyder and asked for a spot on KSU's staff. He has some history under Snyder and, if he could keep his cool for a few years, could probably succeed him there. Snyder is 70-years old and it seemed like he came back only to stabilize the program, so I doubt he is looking to stick around too long. Having a decent replacement on staff would probably help recruiting, but I'd probably wait until after this signing day to bring him on board.

Leavitt is a shady motherfucker. He and Snyder reuniting would have the NCAA on line 1.

Word is that Brennan Carroll actually helped convince Wright to commit on TV this past Saturday and is doing a lot to salvage this class. I'm glad we have some continuity sticking around to aid in the transition.

Pete's resignation press conference is set to begin in a few minutes. It appears likely that USC will announce their new head coach tonight, and if the reports are true, I think SC fans are going to be thrilled with the group of coaches that are coming. Jack Del Rio will be the head coach and he'll be surrounded by some great talent

Alabama DC Kirby Smart officially turns down the offer to take over the defense at UGA (his alma mater, where his wife also played b'ball).

They'll move on to their 4th choice now (having been rejected by Bud Foster, John Chavis, and Smart), quite possibly Dallas Cowboys ass't Todd Grantham.

DelRio will be the new Pete Carroll, not so good as HC in the NFL, but great as a college one.
DelRio will then be courted by another NFL team after having many great seasons at the helm, winning 3 or 4 NT's, and no ranking below 10.

Wishful thinking here.

Yeah, it's interesting with Groh, because he can say that money truly doesn't matter. The first $4 million of his salary has to be paid directly to Virginia to reimburse them for his buy-out. No sane person is going to pay a DC that much money, so a bidding war can't really happen.

Georgia Tech has a press conference scheduled tomorrow morning at 9:30 Eastern. It was thought Groh would be announced there, but we'll see.

You can think of it as a sort of "non-compete." He doesn't owe them anything if he doesn't take a job, but if he does, it goes to offset the buy-out amount. I think it is a fairly standard contract provision.

Jacksonville Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio remains on job - ESPN

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Jack Del Rio said Tuesday he will remain coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars, a decision made after Del Rio and team owner Wayne Weaver met Tuesday to discuss the coach's future with the franchise.

Del Rio has three years and $15 million remaining on his contract.

The scheduled meeting came around the same time the Los Angeles Daily News reported that Del Rio, a USC alumnus, had received an offer to replace Pete Carroll as Trojans coach. Carroll left the Trojans to coach the Seattle Seahawks.

"That's all speculation and hype," Del Rio told WJXT-TV as he arrived for work Tuesday morning, adding the report about an offer from USC was "manufactured."

"Only thing I can tell you is I've been busy working on the Jaguars for 2010, meeting with my staff, meeting with Gene Smith, we're going to meet with Mr. Weaver. We're busy at work, trying to build this team strong.

"All of those other things are a figment of other people's imaginations."
...
With Del Rio out of USC's picture, former San Francisco 49ers and Detroit Lions coach Steve Mariucci and USC have been in contact in recent days, two sources told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

Mariucci works as an analyst at NFL Network, but he has expressed an interest in returning to coaching with the right opportunity.

Typically that is where they negotiate something. Groh wants to coach and Virginia doesn't want to pay someone to sit at home and do nothing.

If it is Kiffin with his dad, Coach O, and 2 others that are being rumored, it is a homerun hire in my opinion and it means that USC is confident that there is nothing to the past alleged violations.

The only plus is with recruits, I think in the long run Kiffin could be a terrible choice...
