It's funny, I really believe we can beat anyone at this point. Our defense is awesome, and Justin Amaya can throw over anyone. Miami has given up 74 points in 7 games - 31 of those are ours.

Amaya is the most under-rated player in TCY history. Case closed.

Offensive Game Plan for Georgia Tech-
I think the way to beat these guys is to run the ball up the gut and throw some quick passes and screens. With Lentzner out, Amaya isn't going to have all that time in the pocket that he used to have. Plus GT has a couple of quality DE's. We want to avoid them. It will be nice to get the receivers the balls and let them do the rest. Code:

I took care of recruiting this week, basically just doing some re-visits of some existing contacts.
Georgia Tech (4-3, 3-3) at North Carolina State (5-3, 4-2) (-5), No TV coverage Interesting Matchup: GT's Doug Luong vs. NC State's Donald Clark. Both of these guys have are fighting to be the ACC's top wide receiver. Clark has 7 more receptions, but his team has played one more game (though Clark himself has only started 5 of 8 games). Both are deadly when they catch the ball - Clark averages 19.6 ypc while Luong averages 20.4. However, in the clutch is where Clark pulls away, having dropped only one pass all year while Luong has 5. Injuries: GTs best player, RB Marcus Mullis is out with a pulled quad. Players to Watch: Georgia Tech's QB Buck Lindgren (1485 yards, 13 TDs, 7 Int) prefers the long passing game, and he has two able receivers in Doug Luong and Danny Castillo.

Game on!
Weather in Raleigh: 55 degrees and raining Georgia Tech wins the toss and elects to receive. Kickoff is down to the 13 and returned 42 yards (!) to the NC State 45. 1st and 10 GT. First play is an offtackle run by Ross that gains 9 - Herman Sanderson gets credit for the tackle. 2nd and 1. Wynn goes off the right tackle and is stomped for a 2 yard loss by Sanderson and Marcus Perez (filling in for Arnswaldt today). 3rd and 3. Lindgren passes to the RB Ross and he gains 11 - Henry Westbrook on the tackle. 1st and 10 at the 27. Counterplay by Ross shakes us out of our shorts and he gains 15. 1st and 10 at the 12. Holding on GT. 1st and 21. Illegal Contact with Receiver on NC STATE. 1st and 10 at the 13. Lindgren fades back for the pass but Lorenzo Roberts is blitzing and finds a seam - a SACK and a 6 yard loss! 2nd and 16. Ross runs off the left guard but is dropped immediately for a 3 yard loss by Herman Sanderson (pbp says he knocked down the GT lineman to wreck the play). 3rd and 19. Offsides, NC State. 3rd and 14. Lindgren throws to Ross for the completion - 10 yard gain. 4th and 4 from the 7. 24 yard FG is good. 7 plays, 34 yards, 5:10 taken off the clock. Georgia Tech 3, NC State 0, 9:50 left in the first

GT's kickoff is received at the 7 by Trent Brodie and returned 28 yards to our own 35.
Justin Amaya, at this point a god-like figure in Raleigh steps onto the field... Amaya fades back to pass and it's intercepted at the GT 32 - returned 12 yards to the GT 44. Cool, that was rather ironic.

GT's ensuing drive goes nowhere, so our next drive starts at our 23.
We decide to pass the ball again....the first pass to Brodie is dropped and then Amaya overthrows Clark. 3rd and 10, Amaya passes and again it's intercepted and returned 28 yards for the score. Ugh. Amaya is clearly looking like the backup quarterback we always thought he'd be. Why now? Georgia Tech 10, NC State 0, 6:37 left in the 1st

On our next drive we decide to run the ball and we're highly successful. Amaya also picks up his first completion of the day. Ultimately, however, the drive gets stalled by 2 penalties and 2 sacks, bringing up a 4th and 32 at the GT 38.
The punt is downed at the GT 8, and their drive goes nowhere (in fact loses 5 yards). Our defense is really man-handling their offensive line. The first quarter ends with GT ball at their 3 facing a 4th and 15. 1st quarter stats: First Downs: GT 3, NC State 2 Rushing: GT 13, NC State 24 Passing: GT 21, NC State 8

Nice punt by GT - 42 yards with a fair catch. We'll start at their 45.
False Start, NC STATE. Argh! We've been shooting ourselves in the foot all day. 1st and 15. GT offsides. Ok, never mind. 1st and 10. Orlando Macri runs around the right end for 13 yards - KRB by Nathan Matthews. 1st and 10 at the 32. Macri runs the exact play again and gains 14 - KRB by Cedric Wayne. 1st and 10 at the 18. Macri gets the hand off and gains 8 - KRB by Clyde Hickman. We can (and are) running the ball down their throat. 2nd and 2. Too Many Men on the Field - GT. 1st and goal at the 5. Screen pass to Macri nets 4, down to the 1. Macri runs off the left tackle and is buried for a 3 yard loss. 3rd and goal at the 4. Amaya's pass to Jack Mackie is blocked at the line. ARGH! 4th and goal at the 4. 21 yard FG by Vincent Allen is good. Drive was 6 plays, 36 yards, 3:54 taken off the clock. Georgia Tech 10, NC State 3, 10:56 left in the half

Another 3 and out for GT on their next drive. BTW, Ross has now gained 32 yards on 12 carries. Note that he has 20 yards on his first two carries...
34 yard punt is returned 5 yards by Kenneth Wertz. 1st and 10 NC State at their 36. On a 3rd and 9 play Amaya finally gets it to Donald Clark for a 10 yard gain. On the next series of downs, we face a 3rd and 3 at the GT 46. Amaya calls for a QB draw and picks up the yardage needed for the first down. 1st and 10 at the 43. Orlando Macri goes over the right guard and picks up a KRB by Cedric Wayne, collecting 9 yards. Macri has 84 yards on 10 carries thus far. 2nd and 1 at the 34. Macri picks up 3 more running off the left tackle - KRB by Ricky Bednarsh. 1st and 10 at the 31. An incomplete pass, a 1 yard carry by Macri and a 3 yard draw by Amaya brings up 4th and 6 at the 27. Do we go for it? Yep..and we make it! Justin Amaya and Trent Brodie combine on the 10 yard reception for the first down at the GT 17! Skyhigh after the last play, Orlando Macri gets the call and rambles all the way in for the 17 yard TD run - KRB by Ricky Bednarsh. 13 plays, 64 yards, 5:43 off the clock. Georgia Tech 10, NC State 10, 3:19 left in the half

GT is stopped on their next series pretty easily and we're left with one play left in the half from our own 19. Gino Linquist collects the handoff and rambles 26 yards around the right end - KRB by Ricky Bednarsh. The half ends on a positive note and we clearly have momentum on our sides.
Halftime: Georgia Tech 10, NC State 10 First Downs: GT 5, NC State 11 Rushing: GT 20, NC State 121 Passing: GT 29, NC State 37 Amaya just doesn't look comfortable out there today. Hopefully we can continue to ride Macri for the victory.

Second half begins and we have the ball. The kickoff is returned 32 yards by Ralph Spaulding to our own 37.
1st and 10. Macri runs a trap, but no one is fooled - 2 yard loss. 2nd and 12. Amaya is passing, but GT is blitzing, forcing Justin to scramble for a yard. 3rd and 11. Amaya throws away from double coverage and finds Trent Brodie open for a 10 yard gain. 4th and 1 at our 46 - do we go for it? Nope. 48 yard punt with a fair catch pins GT at their own 6. GT moves the ball (behind a Ross trap that nets 22), but their drive dies at their own 36. Nice punt of 45 yards and no returns means we have the ball at our own 19. Macri loses 3 on the first play, bringing up a 2nd and 13. Amaya fades back to pass and tries to connect with Clark on a post pattern. However, it's intercepted and returned the distance (45 yards) for GT's 2nd touchdown of the game. Ugh. Georgia Tech 17, NC State 10, 9:31 left in the 3rd

We start on next drive at our 29. Amaya is looking a little nervous out there. So...he calls a pass play and completes it to Trent Brodie for 9. 2nd and 1. Another pass, but no one's open - Amaya is sacked for the 3rd time in the game. 3rd and 6. A pass in the flat to Macri nets 11 yards and the first down. 1st and 10 at our 44. Macri gets the handoff and goes around the right end for 20 yards - KRB by Kelvin Miller. Macri has 120 yards on 16 carries. 1st and 10 at the 36. Amaya looks for Linquist on first down and it's complete for 5 yards. 2nd and 5. Macri goes around the right end, but it gains only a yard. As a bonus, there's an unsportmanslike conduct penalty called against us and Justin Amaya is injured (though it doesn't say it's serious). Superduper! 3rd and 19 at the 45. Amaya's next pass is incomplete. 4th and 19 - we've outgained GT 205 to 79, and we're down by 7. Awesome!
41 yard punt and return loses a yard. 1st and 10 GT at their 3. A turnover would be nice here.

Georgia Tech, somehow, is able to rush the ball and they move out to their 31 before the drive begins to stall (with a little help from a penalty). On 3rd and 8, Lindgren passes and it's intercepted by Jorge Montgomery at the 38....he finds an alley...gets a block....and is finally dropped at the GT 7! First and goal at the Georgia Tech 7 yard line!
On first down, Amaya attempts a pass but can't find anyone - he scrambles but is dropped at the line of scrimmage. That's the way the quarter ends... Georgia Tech 17, NC State 10, end of 3rd quarter First Downs: GT 9, NC State 13 Rushing: GT 85, NC State 133 Passing: GT 31, NC State 72

2nd and goal at the 7. Amaya passes to Kenneth Wertz but it's defended by GT's Hanks. 3rd and goal. We try to surprise them by running Orlando Macri up the middle, but he's taken down after a yard. 4th and goal at the 6. THAT is disappointing. Vincent Allen's 23 yard FG attempt is good.
Georgia Tech 17, NC State 13, 13:58 left in the game

Ensuing kickoff is a touchback. GT starts on their 20.
Option play to Ross loses 2 yards - LB Steve Durham eluded the offensive lineman to break up the play. 2nd and 12. NC State offsides. Son of a... 2nd and 7. Ross goes off left tackle and loses a yard - Perez and Durham combine for the stop. 3rd and 8. Lindgren passes to Luong and it's complete for 10 yards and the first down. 1st and 10 at the 32. Ross goes around the right end but is stopped after a yard - O.J. Brooks ran right past the lineman to break up the play. 2nd and 9. Lindgren option to Ross loses a yard - Herman Sanderson on the tackle. Ross has 98 yards on 28 carries. 3rd and 10. NC State pass intereference. 1st and 10 at the GT 35. I am livid.

After a 19 yard completion, a couple penalties on GT and an 11 yard completion, GT has a 3rd and 3 at our 44 yard line. Lindgren runs the option and tosses to Ross who finds a hole and gains 9 yards. 1st and 10 at our 35. Ross has 107 yards on 29 carries. A delay of game penalty and an incomplete pass to Luong brings up 2nd and 15. False start, GT. 1st and 20. Pass from Lindgren to Wynn is broken up by Herman Sanderson (who "was in terrific position throughout the play"). 3rd and 20 at our 45. Lindgren passes and it's complete to White for a gain of 14. 4th and 6 at our 31. Do they go for it?

Well...they were going to...but a false start penalty forces them back another 5 yards. 4th and 11 at the 36....
They still go for it - the pass to Luong is knocked down at the line of scrimmage by CJ Schmaltz! Ball turned over on downs! 1st and 10 NC State at their own 36. 7:24 left in the game

Let's get serious, boys.
Gino Linquist gets the carry and nets 4 on first down. 2nd and 6. Linquist gets it again and follows Kelvin Miller's KRB, breaking it for 20 yards! 1st and 10 at the GT 40. Gino again, this time off the right guard - 3 yard gain. 2nd and 7 (where's Macri?). Macri (there he is!) runs a trap but gets zilcho. 3rd and 7 at the 37. Amaya throws a screen to Macri and he picks up 6. 4th and 1 at the 31 - 4:57 left in the game. Gulp.

Gutsy call....Amaya fades back on the 3-step drop and zips it to Trent Brodie over the middle for an 8 yard gain! 1st and 10 at the GT 23!

Macri runs off the right guard for a yard on first down. 2nd and 9 at the 22. Amaya attempts a pass to Orlando Macri, but it's overthrown. 3rd and 9. Amaya attempts another pass but can't find anyone open and is forced to scramble. He picks up 5 yards, but that will bring up a 4th and 4 at the GT 17 with 3:33 left. What's the call?!

Vincent Allen connects on the 34 yard FG. 9 plays, 47 yards, 3:58 off the clock.
Georgia Tech 17, NC State 16, 3:26 left in the game. We have all our timeouts.

The kickoff is returned to the GT 25. 1st and 10 for GT - 3:20 left.
Lindgren is passing (!) and looking for Luong, but CJ Schmaltz hurries him into a bad throw. 2nd and 10. Lindgren passes again, this time to Ross, and he succeeds - 14 yard gain and a first down. Ugh. 1st and 10 at the 39 - 2:37 left.

Another Lindgren pass - incomplete as Lorenzo Roberts "defended the play with ease." 2nd and 10. Lindgren fades back (what is the GT coach thinking?) and DT David Finley hurries him into the incompletion. 3rd and 10 - 2:24 left. We send the blitz package in, and it rattles Lindgren into a false start (as well as a non-serious injury). 3rd and 15. Lindgren passes to White and completes it for 21 yards - we're in a loose man to man!? 1st and 10 at our 45 - 2:15 left, timeout NC State.

GT attempts to run the ball in, are unsuccessful and then fall on the ball, ending the game.
Final Score: Georgia Tech 17, NC State 16 How could we lose this?

Damn, that game sucked. Amaya looked a little too human today, throwing entirely too many interceptions. It really didn't help that we had Freddie Hugh in for Newt. I'm sure that those DE's were scaring the hell out of Amaya.

For those who don't have access to the files, here are our offensive numbers for the day...
Note that Amaya was awful and Donald Clark was nowhere to be found. Code:
Lindgren of the Yellow Jackets didn't fair much better, going 12 of 24. I would swear half of his completions occurred in that final, clock-killing drive.

BTW - I've just changed over my NCAA2005 Maryland dynasty to our TCY Groupthink home page. Let me know what you think. Right now it's a work in progress, but I hope to add some scripts to automate this stuff as we go along. I'm hoping this adds to everyone's immersion factor
Edit: Check my signature for the link to the page.

Sorry. I didn't get a chance to put together our Offensive Game Plan last night. I will be able to get to it tonight.
Sorry about the delay. |
