Given the baseball players' union, the owners would have to give up 3 more years of free agency to add a few games for suspensions.

Heh. After seeing the blurbs on SI and MLB.com about Jason Hammel no-hitting the Twins through seven, I turn on the MLB.TV stream of the game just in time to hear the words, "...ending Jason Hammel's bid for a no-hitter."

Sorry, O's fan.

It's a marathon, not a sprint. You've got to finish.

I know what it is I just wouldnt count a team(especially a team loaded with talent) out after 2 now 3 games. The Rays looked like complete shit to start last season and they came around.

Let's be fair. The Yankees played the Rays and the Red Sox played the Tigers. The Orioles are 3-0 after playing the Twins.

Just wait until the Yankees and the Red Sox play the Orioles and the Blue Jays.

ESPN has the Tigers as being over 75% odds of making the playoffs.

As much as it pains me to point this out, the 1998 Yankees started 0-3 (and 1-4) - and finished with 114 wins.

I don't think the Yankees season can officially start until ESPN does their "Should they be worried?" story. They seem to start slow almost to a default.

Well, this fucking sucks:

Quote:
During 28 of the next 32 Saturday nights, a schedule that stretches all the way into December, FOX will be airing live, primetime sports coverage as reported by Sports Business Daily. We discussed FOX's foray into primetime baseball (which will begin on May 19th and continue for ten straight weeks), but FOX has some other things up their sleeve during the summer, including coverage of NASCAR (three races), college football (a whopping 13 games), and FOX's new sports crown jewel - UFC (three live fight cards on FOX, which doesn't even take into account the others airing on FX and Fuel).

That means those of us who bought the MLB package are going to be blacked out of all Saturday night games for basically the entire summer.

During the primetime schedule, all games scheduled between 7 and 10 PM EST will air on FOX locally and be unavailable to watch on MLB Extra Innings or MLB.tv. Normally, FOX blackouts only take out three afternoon games at a time. During the primetime periods, the blackouts will take out five or six games at a time.

FOX's MLB blackout rules get a little more involved | February

So let me make sure I got this right.

If I have a sub to MLB.tv and I want to watch the Orioles on one of these nights and I live in Indianapolis, it will still be blacked out for me over the internet even though I am going to see the Reds on FOX because that is the regional team?

That is fucked up.

Yes. It's always been that way on Saturday afternoons, which is usually fine with me because I'm rarely around to watch Saturday afternoon games and it typically only affects a few games. The change this year is Fox is showing a ton of primetime games, meaning all the evening games will now be blacked out. I guess for those games on the west coast that start at 10pm ET or later, we'll still get those. But the 5-7 games on at 7pm - nope. You either follow along on the internet or your phone, or you listen to Buck and McCarver call a game you probably didn't want to watch to begin with.

There's no reason for me to waste my money on MLB.TV until they get rid of black outs. I only have interest in seeing my local team, but I don't have cable.

I use a proxy for Reds games. Now, that doesn't work for my PS3 (well, it can, but I don't feel like going through the trouble), but for games that aren't on the local channel I can proxy and watch the opponents coverage. There are times where I am not in control of the tv and I proxy, or if I am at campus for the day I will proxy and watch from my laptop, as well.

But even then, I get my money worth because I do watch a lot of other baseball through it. I do wish I didn't have to proxy, though. (It is extremely easy with the laptop, though)

European mlb.tv users have no blackouts at all, so it might be worth trying a proxy.

I don't know who the Twins announcer is but he's already referred to Angels reliever Bobby Walden and Rangers pitcher Pedro Feliz.

The FOX blackouts are going to be irritating but I can't see not getting it based on 10 days worth of games.

I understand why local games are blacked out (REAL local games, not the "Las Vegas is the home market for six different teams, four of which are not available on local cable" crap). The Fox stuff not so much.

I'm not quite sure why there isn't some sort of deluxe package for an extra $50 bucks or so that gets you around the Saturday blackouts and gets people their local games if they've cut the cord. If people are willing to pay for blackout circumvention, why on earth wouldn't you arrange it so they can? The answer to all of this is, of course, "MLB/Selig are complete idiots."
