Sepp Blatter: Russia were chosen as 2018 World Cup hosts before the vote | Football | The Guardian

Sepp Blatter has cast further doubt over the legitimacy of the 2018 and 2022 World Cup bidding process by claiming there was an agreement in place to award the tournaments to Russia and the USA before voting had begun.

It's just comedy at this point.

I go along and watch Orlando City regularly because they're my local side - I do genuinely enjoy watching them and can see an appeal in the MLS for everyone ...

The league itself has an almost 'unique' feel to it in that its incredibly tactically simplistic in comparison to most top leagues, this is almost certainly down to most teams within it having one or two truly talented players, a few more with ability and then a fair few 'make weights' (who are still 10x the player I'll ever be ) ...

This means that matches are inherently unbalanced and that the weaker players on the teams can be ripped by several opposition players generally making games open and interesting, combine this with the vast majority of 'special' players being attacking minded and this encourages coaches to concentrate more on attack than defense.

(just my take - your milage may vary ...)

What a wild match and even more wild PK's in the POR/KC game. 11 rounds with it ending up Keeper vs Keeper. Not to mention a miss in round 9 or 10 that hit the left post, went across the goal line, hit the right post and ricocheted out.

The Portland Timbers v. Sporting KC playoff game was one of the craziest games I've ever seen.

First half was 0-0. Portland goes up 1-0, and then not long after the KC goalkeeper gets a concussion. It seems the medical examiner wants him off the field, but the keeper overrules him... only to have him subbed off 10 minutes later. After that happens, KC equalizes in the 87th minute. But then there are SEVEN minutes of extra time (due to the goalkeeper concussion circumstance). No one scores, extra time.

KC scores in the 96th minute. And it seems like they are in control. A horrible defensive lapse, however, leads to an equalizer in the 118th minute.

It goes to penalties, and in the first 5 kickers, it's equal (I think 3 scores to 2 misses each). Then its one and ones. Both teams are matching each other. Like the 7th kick, Portland (who is going first in the shootout) misses only to have KC miss it right after, to have the shootout continue. A few kicks later Portland misses again and then this happens:

https://mtc.cdn.vine.co/r/videos/736...YGWUs88yeUIbUw

KC's kicker hits BOTH POSTS and has his shot bounce out, keeping the shootout going.

It goes all the way to the GOALKEEPERS shooting against each other (yep, 11th round). It is then when KC's keeper misses against Portland's after Portland's keeper scores that the game is over with Portland moving to the next round.

And I just was about to post that despite the loss, Chelsea had a better performance today. Now...not so much.

In the last few weeks Chelsea have progressed from being outplayed by their opponents to playing about on par with their opponents and dropping points anyway. Up until we threw in the towel at the end, today fit that pattern beautifully.

Watching what is happening to Chelsea makes me appreciate Arsene Wenger so much more. Don't get me wrong, I've never been one of the Wenger out guys, but I have been plenty pissed off in the past about decisions he's made, both tactically and in the transfer market. (I realize some of those decisions weren't his, but some absolutely were. For example, there is still no excuse in my mind for us not buying some outfield players this year)

Wenger has never allowed something like this to happen. I mean, we Fing started Dijour, Jenkinson (the young version), Coq in his first game, Traore and were slaughtered at Man U 8-2. Arsenal won 7 of their next 10 games and dealt with it.

Mou? He's dealing with some difficulties and he's caved. He's become a paranoid drunk man throwing things at kids who get on his lawn. He's shown no ability to fix the issues with his team and has actually compounded many of those issues. it's really an amazing thing to watch.

I sure would love a title. . . but I'm sure happy I've never had to deal with this type of a train wreck either.

Thanks for the vine - inexplicably that was NOT included in the official highlight package of that game. That was a game i felt 90% certain was going to go to extra time, so i decided in advance to not even try to watch the entire thing. I get up at about 530 eastern, so those late late west coast games are hard to deal with on a weeknight. Looks like i missed a seriously great one.

What a goal by DeFoe! I am not sure Sam Allardyce appreciates all the fancy skill though.

Drogba is much better heading for goals then heading to clear the ball. Terrible clearance to give up the first goal of the match.

I liked what Twellman said about Steven Betashour getting his ring taped on the sideline, saying it was ridiculous, and to just take it off instead of wasting time. Spoken like a true romantic.

So, apparently there's some reasonably-supported rumor that Mourinho's going to get sacked after this weekend's games. Pretty amazing turnaround, if true.

NYCFC is fucking insane. Firing Jason Kreis for not making the playoffs after Lampard decides not to come to the team until the middle of the summer and just when the team is gelling and starting to play well, getting Pirlo (rather than a defensive minded DP like Kreis wanted) which completely destroyed the chemistry of the team. And it's Kreis's fault? I desperately want Atlanta to sweep him up, but it seems like Toronto is salivating over getting a coach of Kreis's caliber.

Yeah that was good (helps Haisley didn't write it ). I was somewhat surprised Sunderland went with Big Sam when they were linked to Bradley. Not saying that Bradley is like an amazing catch (though he may be), but deciding not to go in that direction to hire a retread like Sam Allerdyce... jeez.

Hopefully he can find Ligue 1 success in the near future if he gets the Le Havre job and can get them promoted.

There was an article on Grantland (RIP) a few months ago which pointed out the challenge American coaches have in breaking into Europe. I would say until one or two do it, or the MLS gets to a parity level with even the 2nd tier teams, a lot of owners/GMs are going to think the difference in play/background is simply too much to take the risk.

This is why there's an actual rationale behind hiring Allardyce. Sure, he's not great, but he's a known quantity, and he gives a team a quantifiable chance to avoid relegation, which is important because of how damaging relegation from the EPL is.

The converse is hiring a real "unknown", which is what an American coach is. Sure, you might get "lucky" and he's good and gets you to mid-table, or he could be out of his depth in which case he puts you in such a hole there's no way you can escape the drop even if you fire him by February.

I'm not saying it's right, but I can see where they're coming from.

I have to be dreaming. No way a gentle toe poke from the edge of the area goes in past a Premier League keeper, or a player playing non league football three years ago sets a record for scoring in consecutive games in the same season. When things are going your way...

It was a good end to a horrible week - the 20 year old son of a friend/ex-employer died last weekend from Good Pastors's syndrome. He was a huge Leicester fan, followed them home and away with his dad, and who knows, maybe he had something to do with Gomes letting the ball get away from him.

He won't get a job with a truly big club (i.e. Premiership or equivalent elsewhere) until he's either proven himself by bringing a club into the top level of such a league or he stays with a club after he takes them into Europe and causes some upsets ...

Avoiding relegation is HUGE for Premiership clubs if people aren't aware the prize money from the Premiership now outstrips that of the Champions League hugely to give an idea of perspective and priorities given to such things by clubs in Europe.

(if you want to look at priorities and the effects of such then look at how clubs have performed in the past in the UEFA Europa League, this gives some idea of such things ... the clubs from smaller countries where the competition is more important often perform surprisingly well because they're naturally got more motivation to do so ..)

Vieira understood why City gave him that opportunity: just like signing Yaya Toure after he had won six trophies as a Barcelona player in one season strengthened City on the pitch, having a former player like Vieira around the club–even if his best playing days weren’t spent at the Etihad–enhanced the club's credibility.

It also makes it all the more astonishing why Arsene Wenger has hardly tapped into his "Invincibles" network (Thierry Henry, who has recently been involved in coaching Arsenal’s youngsters, aside).
“I had an offer from City and I did not receive a phone call from Arsene,” said Vieira, who is not the only ex-Arsenal great disappointed never to get that call from Wenger. City is the beneficiary.

When he was initially offered the job as reserve team coach in 2013, he said, “It reinforced my affection for City and its bosses.” It has crucially allowed him to learn away from the spotlight, make mistakes without paying the price for them, and develop his own philosophy.

...

That figure of 56% of first-time managers failing to work again must loom for any new coach. Vieira has not taken the Solskjaer route: he knows the club owners and they know him. This will be the start of a coaching career that might even end up with him at the Manchester City helm. There’s more chance of that happening than Vieira going back to Arsenal. And if the worst comes to the very worst, at least at New York City FC, he can’t be relegated.

Just throws that in at the end with no basis or follow-up support .. just because Wenger didn't offer him the player development role? It's less about Wenger and more about the Arsenal board when it's time to move on, really.

I really have no idea if Vieira is a good manager, we'll see!

And Ireland takes a 1-0 lead with 10 to go in a game you literally can not see across the field due to fog. Just an absurd lack of visibility.

EDIT -And Bosnia ties it 2 minutes later.
