In FCS news, Abilene Christian is going to move to Div. 1 FCS, joining the Southland Conference. They have been a long time NAIA/Division 2 school, and have sent quite a few players to the NFL.

This part of the whole conference realignment is a big downside. In the past you were in one conference for all sports. We'll likely see more schools in more than one conference much like this going forward. Seems kind of silly. |

Yes, it's a huge downside that a football program as good as Boise State could choose to participate in a competitive conference, instead of being in a subpar one just so its non-revenue sports could stay afloat. |

Explain to me please how "not giving a rip" about those sports reconciles with saying how "out of balance" things have gotten.

I don't give a rip that they are out of balance? In fact, we should spend more on football and crush these little girls and their silly ideas of playing sports? We are WINNING!
There's my shot at it. *While I am digamma, I do not approve the above message. It is for illustrative purposes only. Last edited by digamma : 08-28-2012 at 02:59 PM. |

I won't give a rip about the other sports because they're not of interest to me. With that said, it doesn't take a genius to figure out that the athletic department focus is clearly on a couple of big-revenue sports rather than the 'athletic department'. |

It's not a value judgment. It's a straightforward situation. The priorities of the athletic departments are clearly out of whack and I can understand why people would care about that. But I could also care less from a personal standpoint. I like football and basketball and little else. |

After Mizzou saw A&M's going to the SEC video, they just knew they could do better. Like A&M, these guys are the SEC's problem now.

There is a chance the Mizzou guys are just messing around. The Aggie one is disturbingly serious in nature. |

Looks like a great deal. I still think the Big 12 adds teams within the next two years, so their conference championship game will probably jump the number up another $2-3M per school. |

It just saw that the contract officially moves this year's Texas-TCU game to Thanksgiving night.
The Big 12 media day is at the hotel across the street from the client I'm visiting today. Might have to head over there at lunch and check it out. edit: or maybe not. It is at the Westin Galleria in Dallas, not the Westin Galleria in Houston.

It's a good starting point for sure. I'd agree that they will need to add the extra two teams and get a championship game back in play. Whether it jumps or not depends quite a bit on which two teams are added I'd think. It's great for our friend up here in the North (KU, KSU, ISU). They stood to lose the most if the conference couldn't get something done. Glad they have a place to land. |

Also, this means the SEC gets to either play hardball with ESPN for big, big money or they can try to attract attention from NBC (part of a Comcast package?) or CBS

As I already stated, it's great for the teams up in the North. They at least know they'll have a conference for the foreseeable future (whatever that length of time is). Don't think it changes much for Texas and Oklahoma. The difference that they can get by leaving, especially given what people are expecting in the SEC for each team, will still give them the option to leave. The smaller schools like KU, KSU, and ISU have no options to leave. Also, if a block of the members leave together and reduce it below six, the GOR doesn't mean anything. At that point, the conference is dissolved. I don't think it's crazy to think that the TX and OK schools could leave to a separate conference or create a new mega-conference in a merge to avoid paying those amounts in the event that we move to a mega-conference format. |

NBC and CBS are both desperate for programming on their new Sports Channels. It's a huge bidding war right now between those two entities and ESPN. They all know that they'll get the existing package plus first rights option on production rights for the new SEC Network when that is formed. |

Well I think that probably explains (at least partially) why the FSU-to-Big XII stuff died down. Not sure what it really means in terms of additional money, though.

Wonder if that's it for their Big 10/Big East rivalries and USC? My guess would be they keep USC and Michigan and dump everyone else but maybe the other games mean more to them then an outsider like myself understands. |

Seems like it would be easier to give the Big Ten the same deal. They play 3 Big Ten teams now as it is. I'm sure the Big Ten wanted all or nothing, but since that was never going to happen, might as well take the next best thing.

I'd guess FSU, Miami and BC are permanently on the schedule. Then rotate everyone else, 1 home, 1 away every year until ND becomes a full time member.
Does this really change Notre Dame's historical schedule all that much? They still have 7 "out of conference" games to schedule once they join up. Even if you assume USC, Michigan and Navy stay on, that's still 4 games to play with. Also, do these ACC games count as in conference in the standings for the other teams? |

I doubt it. Which means once we move to 9 conference games, FSU would possibly have UF, ND, and one cupcake on the schedule most years for OOC games.
