WotR is really fun. You'll run into paralysis by analysis but on most difficulties, A) you'll be fine, B) except on the most unfair difficulties, you can respec your character (for free in most cases)

Still trying to stick to one character to get through the first act of Pathfinder Kingmaker. Did but WotR when it went on sale on Black Friday.

I've looked at several of the base builders over the years. Haven't pulled the trigger on many. Any "if you don't have this, GET IT" ones that might be more obscure?

Well not under the radar of course, it pretty much starts with RimWorld and Dwarf Fortress.

Depending on the setting you are looking for SubNautica, Satisfactory, Surviving the Aftermath, Endzone, Frostpunk, Before We Leave, My Time at Portia/My Time at Sandrock, The Wandering Village, Spacebase Startopia, Dice Legacy, Kainga, etc.

Some new ones coming out, one of which I really love is Against the Storm, Ixiom, Imagine Earth, Farthest Frontier, Aquatico. and Surviving the Abyss

Finally playing X-Com 2. Having most of my squad out for 14-30 days after each mission is annoying as all get out. Seems they may have fixed that in the expansion with the infirmary but that doesn’t help me as I’m playing vanilla.

Right now I just feel like I’m in a constant loop of buying and killing off rookies in each mission that pops up as my A team licks their wounds on the bench. Doesn’t really help that I had two of those alien buildings I need to eliminate pop up one 2 jumps away and one 3 jumps away off the bat. If nothing else I’m getting the full experience of struggling against alien occupiers.

I finished my first playthrough on X-Com 2 and that is more of an early game thing. Once you put an engineer in the infirmary, the # of days they're shelved is drastically reduced. Still, I try to have approximately 4 of each class levelling up so that you can handle some of your soldiers being out. You'll still have your A team, but you can't just have one group anymore, you definitely need to level up a full backup squad and then some.

Right now I'm trying to decide if I should push on or if I should just shelve this game. I have been able to work through this a bit with playing more conservatively but, I've ran into a few bugs that have really put me off of the game.

Spoiler

That's weird, I've played all the way through, and also a good chunk of the expansion, and I've never seen any bugs like this. Everybody was always in their right place.

And the infirmary is basically there in the vanilla game, it's called the Advanced Warfare Center. Make sure to build that, it's essential. Cuts your recovery time in half.

Did some research today while I should have been working and I think the issues I’m running into are exclusive to the Epic Game Store version. You would think Steam and Epic would share the same version, but literally every single person reporting these errors has the Epic version. People with much more free time than I have worked out the correlation months ago apparently.

Rimworld is the Star Deal for about the next 40 hours or so at Fanatical and its at the biggest discount, 30% off or $25. Still not much of a discount but seems to be the best you are going to get on it.

Yeah, they really don't do much as price drops go.

I’m going to keep beating a dead horse, XCom 2 is the buggiest game I’ve ever played. The button to make utility items available to the rest of the squad sends you back to the geoscape. Such a good game. I may just buy it on Steam to avoid these bugs.

I’ve played through Xcom 2 fully twice without the expansions, once with the expansions and a few hundred hours playing Long War and never experienced a single bug that I can recall. I did play it on Steam, so maybe that’s the difference.

Yes get the Steam version. I don’t remember much about XCom 2 since I’ve been playing WOTC now. But no bugs like you described in my experience.

Maybe just get WOTC and play that?

I would say not really. I don’t really enjoy much of what was added. Better off with the base game and mods.

Likewise, with and without the long war mod I’m probably at 4 or 5 play throughs and I can’t remember a single bug of any significance. Last one being a few months ago.

I only have one of the three but I'd say that they're probably only useful to people that have exhausted themselves on the vanilla base.

Otherwise they just add a layer of complexity and/or difficulty, depending on how you utilize them.

A few hundred hours in the base game, then maybe they're much more exciting.

If anyone has been following Second Front, it's just been released and is at a 15% discount. Second Front seems like a sort of a computer Advanced Squad Leader/modern Steel Panthers (God, I wish someone would just update the graphics in that game -- I just started another campaign in it the other day). Seems like it's competing with Valor & Victory and Lock & Load for that turn-based, squad-level, hex wargame.

Loosely related reco if you're into that kind of thing (which might be just a regurgitation of a reco I heard here) is Armoured Commander II. It's a computerized version of Patton's Best if you're familiar with that board game except that you can lead pretty much any tank or armored vehicle rather than "stuck" in a Sherman.

Picked up a couple of games recently and I thought I'd give a sort of review here.

Ultimate Admiral Dreadnaughts - You build you design and fight with ships from destroyer to dreadnaught on a realtime, pausable sea. Has a campaign. Great concept. Battles are fun. Needs some more grooming which the devs currently ARE doing (daily, it seems). One to watch if you like the designing aspects.

Second Front - Simpler ASL/Steel Panthers. Fun. A little light IMO. Open to the community to make scenarios so that could be yuuuuge if it takes off. Worth it if you want a quick ASL fix.

Potion Craft - In a fantasy setting, you make potions for random customers. Fun, but you have to like the potion effects mini-game which is sort of a map-navigating/tile placing mechanic. Each ingredient has a pattern and you're trying to map a path around obstacles to the particular effect you want.

Crying Suns - Roguelike spaceship command game similar to FTL. I liked the presentation and story. Some may feel it's TOO much like FTL if you already have that game.

That's what I'm playing when I'm not playing OOTP, Valheim, or the Roguetech mod for Battletech. I'm open to questions, comments, and criticisms.

I got Second Front as well. I'm just not crazy about the system, though I can't put my finger on why. I was unwhelmed.
I really like the mods for Battletech as well. There are so many things you can do with them that it gets confusing, but I don't know of another game that has so much single player open world replayability especially with the fantastic mods.
