Shooter - 7.5/10

I went in wanting to see a different flick, but my buddies swapped at the last second. Really not expecting much, because ive never been a big marc wahlberg fan and simply didnt know anything about it. To be honest, for not expecting much i really enjoyed it. Maybe a bad anology, but its where i compare it, so bear with. Its very similar to 300 in the sense that there is a plot, its just kind of weak...the movie is 2 hours of action basically, and it was fun. Nice little ending twist to clean up the story i didnt get until then, and kate mara is a beautiful young lady if i do say so myself.

Scoop - 2.5/10

Now i know why i avoid woody allen movies...i thought hugh jackman might be able to make a movie out of this, but it was 2 hours of not funny. Scarlett Johannson was god awful, and woody allen made my eyes bleed. GAG!

Premonition - 7/10

This is a score i had to give after reflecting for a few days...when i first walked out of the theatre i didnt like it much. Very depressing movie, very confusing movie, and its sandra bullock(serves me right for letting the girl pick the movie for the date). Anyways, after thinking about it i really have to say the movie itself was interesting. Its a time-travel movie of sorts, and is one of those where it all comes together at the end. All loose-ends were tied up, and really was a pretty well thought out movie. For me, its one of those movies where it was a good movie, i just didnt enjoy it all that much. Some movies are great movies and great fun, some are great fun but crappy movies, this was a great movie but just not fun. Take that for what you will...

So shooter was fun but not neceassarily good, and premonition was good but no fun. And Scoop was just crap...

The 300 - 8/10
Saw it at IMAX, and I think watching it on that massive screen really enhanced the viewing experience. Yeah, it was flash without much substance complete with a Xerxes who looked straight out of an episode of Stargate, but as a stylish fantasy flick it was pretty good in my books.

Porco Rosso - 8.5/10
I liked this more than I expected. A very fun movie in the usual Miyazaki style, albeit a little more serious in some parts. The "plane graveyard" scene was particularily awesome.

Children of Men - 5/10 Nothing new here. It just didn't do anything for me. Pretty boring. Wondering what all the fuss was about.

The Departed - 6.5/10 I thought the poor casting really prevented this from being a good film. Jack Nicholson, Matt Damon and Marky Mark were bad choices, with Damon clearly in way over his head.

Grindhouse - 10/10 I don't give out a score like this easily, but this was the most fun I have ever had at a movie. It really helps to know the aim of the directors going into this movie. If you don't know they are going for a horror/terror double-feature in the 70's style, the movie won't be near as fun. This will probably also be a hit or miss movie with some people rating it very high and some very low. It was over the top in the right places, gruesome and funny at the same time and overall just a blast.

Disturbia - 3 of 5 stars, thumbs up

I went in with basically no expectations, this was a sort of "just going to see a movie" movie. I think Shia LaBeouf is a very solid actor, and he is actually a character in a movie where it could have easily been a cardboard cutout role. I thought he and his friend Ronnie were solid and funny chracters. The chick was pretty weak, but overall the movie works enough to enjoy. It's definitely aimed at young teens, but I liked it. Far better than most thrillers going for that audience. Thumbs up.

And it's basically a flat-out remake of Rear Window without officially crediting it.

REIGN OVER ME - There were times during the movie where I just wasn't getting it... wasn't enjoying it. I've sat here for about 3 hours now and thinking about it, maybe Sandler didn't sell his character well enough for me. He was ok, he wasn't terrible, but I just didn't see a real person there... Cheadle, one of my favorite actors, I think was mis-cast but still played his usual "I can't believe this shit" scenes as well as anybody in the business. I hated the last 20 minutes, absolutely hated the ending. Ugh.

Hmmm.... 5/10

Hot Fuzz-- 9/10

This movie had some brilliant and hilarious moments in it. Anyone who loves the cliched action cop thrillers should check this out. They cram every cliche in the book into this one, on purpose, to make fun of it. It was a little slow at first, but enjoyable, maybe a bit overlong. And then the last 30 minutes or so(which, of course, I won't detail) moved into the sublime and really brought the whole satire together.

I'm probably going to go see Fracture tonight.

I probably wouldn't go 9/10... 3 of 5 stars, definite thumbs up on my rating scale... but Hot Fuzz definitely deliverd. Makes a nice transition from poking fun at cop thrillers to becoming one. I agree maybe it was 15-20 minutes too long, but it definitely worked overall.

It's probably more of a 9 out of 10 on my scale, noting I have tor eally hate a movie to give it below a 5. I mean, mediocre and forgettable probably gets a 6 out of me. I gave Shooter a 7.5, and that's a typical action movie (even if I enjoyed it enough to raise it slightly above typical).

So Hot Fuzz is graded more on that scale. It's probably closer to your 3 of 5 stars than it seems. Like 3.5 perhaps.

Yeah, having that transition was great. MAde the movie for me.

I'm glad to see people are digging this movie. I'll probably never get to see it theatres...as I don't have a girlfriend and my friends hate the British (just kidding). alas, I will have to wait until this hits store shelves.

Rocky Balboa - 6/10
Meh. Better than Rocky 5, but I thought it was pretty....uneven. And the fight at the end reminded me of the phrase "sometimes less is more". It was way too "busy". I'm not talking about the amount of punches and the way they reacted to them (typical "Rocky" fight), they just tried to hard to fit in flashes of old Rocky movies, to the point where it's overkill.

My enjoyment of movies doubled when I realized I didn't give a shit if I went to see a movie alone. I see plenty of movies with friends and family, but if something comes out that I want to see, I don't waste my free time trying to find someone else to go with. I just go.

But I know I'm very much the exception in this respect.

Sophie's Choice 9/10
I watched this today for the first time and was blown away by it. Meryl Streep was fantastic. I had heard a little about the movie but did not know much including what the choice was.

Same here. I think i see about 80% of the movies I see alone. It's not like you should be talking during it anyway. I think often it's easier to really get into a movie when you don't have the distraction of company with you.

Liberties? You do realize that no version of the Hitchhiker's Guide perfectly matches another, right? I guess it can be argued that the book too many liberties with the radio show, if you expect an exact reproduction.

Caveat...I'm comparing it with the BBC tv production, which is the only version I have experience with.

Double whammy last night:

Fracture - Hopkins and Gosling were perfectly cast. Hopkins is just so creepy, and Gosling is just young enough to be believably rattled. I thought it was pretty good, there were some holes, but it was damn worth the $7.50 (x2) admission price. 8.5/10

In The Land of Women - The woman sucked me into seeing this. Roeper called it "The Garden State of Michigan." So I wasn't too pissed off about having to see it. It was ok, and I kept joking about how excited I was to see a "cookie cutter love story," but it wasn't that at all. Decent acting; Meg Ryan is still hot. It wasn't terrible. 6/10

Hot Fuzz 9 out of 10, I could not stop laughing, it was a great movie, Probably one of the best I've seen so far this year. Although the last bit was a little goofy.

Half Nelson - Ryan Gosling is the man. Great film. I didn't exactly like the end, but I don't know how any other way it could've ended and worked as well. Enjoyed the dialogue immensely. 9/10

I'm still a little unsure about this one. It contained all the stereotypical sci-fi elements that have been beaten to death in every sci-fi film over the past couple of decades, but the film did it with style. Character-wise it was pretty weak effort I thought. It tried to quickly brush on aspects of the characters, but it was never really fleshed out. Could have maybe used less characters which would've given them the chance to flesh it out more. It also suffered from trying to get a little bit too "2001"-esque towards the end of the film.

All-in-all it was an enjoyable and pretty exciting movie at times, but it was let down by a lack of originality and unremarkable characters. It's basically two parts Solaris (the newer one with Clooney), one part Event Horizon, one part 2001.

Loved the soundtrack though.

don't take this the wrong way but you are out of your fucking mind. Damon was amazing in this. If playing a punk form south boston is over his head then I am not sure what role fits him.

Nicholson was an awesome likeable bad guy and Wahlberg was a perfect prick.

If you thought the casting was bad then you must have liked the story so please, tell us who would have been better suited for these roles?

Well, I don't take it personally. Different strokes for different folks. Damon was just plain bad, IMO. If it were not a Scorsese movie, I would have said he was getting bad direction. Nicholson just didn't fit his role. And Wahlberg didn't do anything at all with the little he was given. He wasn't awful, but he brought nothing to the film.

Yes, I thought the story was good. No, I don't have alternate casting ideas at this time.

Two on DVD, one in the theater:

Syriana - 7/10 - a bit dry at times, put a pretty facinating story where all the wide ranging stories come together in the end. Clooney was excellent in his role, as was Damon, and the guy who played the liberal emir.

Munich - 9/10 - a shame it didn't get a nomination for an Academy Award. Now that I've seen it, I think it was probably the best movie of the past year (save for Pan's Labyrinth, but foriegn films never win the top prize). It's two movies really, one performing "the mission" and the other dealing with the aftermath. It's the aftermath part which really sets it apart. How does a person deal with that much death and paranoia. Brilliant stuff, and Eric Bana is perfect for the main role.

Hot Fuzz - 9/10 - Just utterly hilarious. They topped Shawn of the Dead, and I wasn't sure that they could. But Hot Fuzz just was so much better. I don't think I've seen another movie which had so many laughs per minute. Many memorable scenes, such as the emptying out the pub and two pistols on a bike make this one I'll look to get on DVD.

I saw a movie Saturday night, rented it at Blockbuster, and can honestly say it's one of the worst movies I have ever seen.

Black Christmas - 1/10

I'd give it a zero, but it did provide some comic relief, even though it was meant to be a horror movie. Horrible writing, horrible acting, horrible plot...well, the plot had potential, but with the bad acting and writing, it just had no hope. Horrible horrible movie, don't waste your money or your time.

Agreed. I laughed the entire time. I went in without expectations since I never saw Shaun of the Dead but Hot Fuzz was a riot. The less you know going in, the better. I loved it.

Away From Her (8/10)

This is a film directed by Sarah Polley about an older married couple who deal with separation when the wife is diagnosed with Alzheimer's and goes to a nursing home. Handled in a very mature fashion, not like a tv-movie. In the cast is Julie Christie, Gordon Pinsent, Olympia Dukakis. I think Christie has an excellent shot at an Oscar nomination.

The TV Set (7/10)

David Duchovny and Sigourney Weaver in a movie that satires the process of a TV pilot from casting until finished product. Duchovny watches as his original vision of the show is ripped apart by bitchy Weaver. Pretty funny stuff, if a little obvious. Has an annoying subplot that doesn't work.

I'm really surprised that people have liked this. It has some potential, but makes some serious errors especially with the ending. It's more like a remake of Rear Window for the first 2/3 and a remake of Friday the 13th for the last 1/3.

Yup, it's the Cillian Murphy film. *shrug* It's out in cinemas right now in Australia, and has been for a while now. The session I saw on the weekend is probably one of the last because it's been reduced to two plays per day at most cinemas.

Maybe they are testing it outside the States first or something? It could definately use some polish.

What a powerful, powerful movie. One part of the movie was so intense I could feel the knot in my throat but was so in awe my tears couldn't come out. Amazing, amazing movie... camera work - outstanding.

I just got around to watchiing this and it totaly rocked. It was everything I expected it to be. Great cheesy action and gore and completely predictable.

My only regret is I watched it alone ( Molly had zero desire to see it).

Lost In Translation - Finally got around to seeing this... shouldn't have held off for so long. I liked the story, albeit without much of a point to it other than two people meeting in an atmosphere unfamiliar to both. Well done. 8.5/10
