That's an appeal play if he thinks Pedroia left early. Unless he appealed to third and was denied, he is a dumbass for arguing for a review instead of...keeping the players on the field and having the pitcher throw over to third. There is no reason for him to ask for a review, reviewable or not, unless he does that first. |

Does advancing the game like that eliminate replay, though? In football, as soon as the ball is snapped for the next play you're SOL. How is that written in to the baseball replay? The "timely manner" part of the rule?

I didn't see any appeal, but Showalter thought he had the right to ask the umps for a review: Left fielder David Lough was charged with a throwing error on the final play of the game when his throw home after catching the second out of the ninth inning was wide of the plate and bounced to the backstop, allowing Dustin Pedroia who was shuffling between third base and home plate time to score the winning run to prompt a celebration at home in front of what remained of an announced 33,947. Orioles manager Buck Showalter, the beneficiary of one umpire-initiated review in the inning, remained on the field to argue for another review to confirm whether Pedroia tagged at third, but he wasn't granted it. If he tagged up properly, and if the other two people had tagged up going to the next base, Showalter said of his appeal for a review. It's a timing play, though, on the trailers. So, no shot there. Plus you can't appeal a tag. Go figure. They've got some really strange rules. That will change, too, going forward.

Yes, if you're going to appeal, it has to be before the next pitch is thrown. In the case of Pedroia, if his run ended the game, you could still leave the players on the field and appeal by throwing over to third. I'm not sure why Showalter didn't do that if he was convinced Pedroia left early. The base umpires only make that call if the ball is thrown behind the runner to the base he left, or if an appeal happens after the play. |

The only thing I can think is that before he could appeal (if he didn't), all the Orioles stepped over the foul line (once you do that, you can no longer appeal)

35 years ago this year, a radio station promotion "Destroyed Disco". (and the ensuing fan celebration destroyed a good part of Comiskey Field).
Let's hope that no one has the bright idea to have "Justin Bieber Demolition Night". ESPN story about Disco Demolition - July 12, 1979 - YouTube

I don't understand for the life of me how the call at 2b was overturned in Pittsburgh-Cincinnati game. I've grown tired of replay in less than a month.

Alex Wood is well on his way to another 1-0 loss. Last 2 games of 16 innings and 18ks. He's given up 6 runs in 5 starts and seems likely to be 2-3.

Well at least it wasn't me who jinxed Cueto and his scoreless innings streak. He is still pitching lights out this year.

How much larger must the sample size get before we can determine that Tanaka is a bona fide stud? Don't you need at least 75-100 innings pitched before you can draw conclusions?

I think we can conclude he is a bonafied stud! The question is whether he will be Yu good or just a touch below. If Tanaka just had a bit better command(which I am sure he will learn) he seems to be every bit the pitcher Yu Darvish is. |

He is an interesting pitcher. Looks funny with his delivery but he controls the outside part of the plate and hitters cant seem to figure out his aggressive style. |

Looks like no one here noticed...
Pujols hit #500 tonight. He also hit #499 (first player to hit both 499 and 500 on the same night). He has been playing well this year.

Ahh shoot. I had MLB mix on and didnt even realize he got 500 tonight. It is nice to finally see him healthy again and enjoying playing. The past few years he sort of looked in pain playing most of the time. |

The streak continues. Royals are 10-0 when scoring 4+, 0-9 when scoring less than 4.

I don't think there is any doubt he is a star this season I think Nomo and Dice K are two great examples of why people discuss about what happens when the league sees him a 2nd or 3rd time around. |

He actually said as much last night in the interview. Says he feels healthy again, really, for the first time since leaving St. Louis. The other night, I watched him steal a base. Not a blown hit and run, he actually did a straight steal and he even made it without it being too close. No way he could do that on the plascar fasciatis (sp) he had last year.

Ya, that's a great idea, What would be the right amount, 25K in my name from Albert to the charity of my choice. I'd imagine that ball would get at least 50-100K on the open market? I think I'd be very tempted to keep the ball and sell it to a collector. 50-100K is a lot of money for most people. |

Yeah, before I opened the link, I assumed that he was going to ask to have a donation to Wounded Warriors or something like that. I'm not sure I'd demand a certain amount. I'd just rely on his generosity. The fact that I stated it in public would keep him honest. |

No way in hell I give that ball up for free. I'm all for doing the right thing but that ball has value to someone who is very rich. Somewhere between $20/50K would be fine with me.

Michael Pineda ejected for pine tar. Came out with it on his neck for the 2nd inning, tossed before the end of the inning. Considering the brouhaha last time, what was he (and Girardi) thinking?

Pineda's an idiot for not being more discrete but Farrell knows his guys do it too and just opened a can of worms. All of his pitchers will now be subject to scrutiny when Girardi comes out there and has them checked.

I disagree. Pineda should have been aware of a massive target on his back after what happened a couple of starts ago. Being discreet is an important part of it. You essentially put the manager in a no win situation when you become a jack ass and bring it that far in the open. Farrell couldn't let it take place again without saying anything. He had to do what he had to do. Girardi knows this and won't be an idiot about it. Pineda has just ensured EVERY single movement he makes from now until the end of time will be watched like a hawk. If the pine tar was giving him a massive advantage, he's just lost that aid for quite awhile. |

If tonight's any indication, I'm gonna miss the Derek Jeter farewell tour. Kinda throwing stones from a glass house with Bogaerts current performance in the field, but wow Jeter is just bad at this point. Throws, pick ups are off and the range clearly isn't improving at age 40.

How did Arizona get to a minus sixty run differential in less than a month?

Haven't said much around here but I'm pretty thrilled with the Brewers starting 16-6. It's still a long season but my 79 win prediction may be a tad low.
One of my employees was pretty down in the dumps today as his grandmother died in Nicaragua. He's a pretty big baseball fan and comes from the same town as Vicente Padilla, so I'm taking him to his first Major League game on Sunday to cheer him up a bit. Sixth row behind home plate so he's going to have some awesome seats for his first game. |

They better keep that shift up. I saw they were like playing Roberts at Rover the other day vs Tampa vs some hitters. He truly has arms length range now. I guess the plan was to probably go to Ryan a lot late but then he got hurt. |

My interest in baseball has definitely dropped in recent years, so maybe it's just that...but this is really a thing, that so many pitchers use pine tar these days? Or are people just talking out of their ass?

This was a hell of a tag by d'Arnaud off a great relay to prevent the tying run from scoring.

Every so often there's a inconclusive photo or video of a pitcher with some kind of weird substance on his finger, or glove, or hat. It looks like either sunscreen, or vaseline, or some concoction. There was a whole thing last year with Clay Buchholz having something like that. But the substance always clear or transparent so you can't be 100% sure it's not just sweat or something. Pine tar though, I've never actually seen come up. Which makes sense, pine tar is super-obvious and impossible to miss unless you're concealing it under part of your uniform or something. So I think pitchers use substances with some regularity, but using pine tar, especially like this, is pretty ballsy. |

I don't understand how using say...vaseline/sunscreen (which would make the ball slipperier) is supposed to help you get a better grip?
I get how using pine tar to dirty the ball up would help you get a better grip. |
