Angles are hiring Ron Washington and all the Braves fans are sad to see him go. Just an all around good guy. Hope he has success in what looks like a rebuilding project.

Nope and no one else in Chicago did. Wasn't a single rumor about it. Everyone thought Ross was safe. Counsell is a better manager but that's a lot to pay. Ross is a bit of a cult hero here and probably finished above expectations last season. The only thing I can think of is that the Cubs have a stacked farm system and Ross really hates playing young guys. Maybe they thought he would stunt their development. |

You know it’s a franchise in a bad spot when a surprise arm injury to Johan Oviedo has the fan base on a ledge.

I don't understand the Cards jumping in early for Lynn and Gibson. I'd rather spend their combined salaries on a much better pitcher.

IDK what league this is, but Kung-fu Panda probably should count as three runs.

Why doesn’t Division 1 baseball use wooden bats? I know it’s more expensive probably. But it’s still a rounding error I would assume. I get why Div2 won’t, but the top 25 schools are all drawing more than 3000 fans a game.

I love that Sandoval is thinner now than he was the season after he signed that huge contract with the Red Sox.
I guess the motivation comes back once you can't stick in the Mexican League and are trying to earn at-bats for your "Dubai Baseball United League" team Last edited by molson : 11-27-2023 at 11:46 AM. |

With the BBCOR bats there isn't a huge difference between wood and metal anymore, from a performance perspective. The cost effectiveness just doesn't make sense for a sport that already loses money for most schools. The biggest difference is the obvious, you aren't going to break a metal bat with a bad swing on a ball on the inner half. Most D1 schools also don't pay for their metal bats and they're not going to find a bat maker for wood bats that's going to be willing to do the same. My son's juco league is a wood bat league and even using composite wood bats, which cost about the same as a good metal bat, they'll go through 2-3 a year. So about 1k in bats right there per player. |

Braves get - Jarred Kelenic, Marco Gonzales, Evan White
Mariners get - Jackson Kowar, Cole Phillips

It's an interesting trade. The Mariners are betting big on Cole Philips. The Braves are betting they can fix Kelenic and get some rotational depth with Gonzales. Personally, I don't think Kelenic is fixable. You won't see many guys worse on anything offspeed. Especially offspeed and down in zone. I think the Mariners did a good job of getting a solid prospect for Kelenic before the hype completely falls of Kelenic. It's the braves, though, so kelenic probably hits 40 homers this year. |

This is a salary dump, plain and simple. The team is not committed to winning. It seems odd why the team wants to commit to "payroll flexibility." But hey, they'll get that operating income championship again. Last edited by Jon : 12-04-2023 at 12:17 AM. |

Congrats to Jim Leyland for being elected to the Hall of Fame.
What is the criteria for a Hall of Fame umpire?

Rosenthal says the Braves are not planning to keep Gonzales, that he is being pitch in another trade. Now, here is the dream. Gonzales, Ozuna and Raisel Iglesias all get traded out. Those salaries pretty much total out what Shohei's expected yearly salary. It sounds insane, but somehow Morosi says the Braves are still in discussions with his camp.

I was thinking this morning about how the Mets should go all in on becoming the team of Japanese stars. Senga, Yamamoto, and Ohtani would bring in massive money in merchandising and licensing in Japan. They could end up making money on the 100 mil a year it might cost to sign all three.

I'm just excited that the Pirates picked up OOTP2019 legend Seth Beer in the minor league round of the Rule 5. That man was a hall of fame in every career I played in that version.

By the way. That Seth Beer is the same kid that set all the swim records for Swim Atlanta when my kids were growing up. I’m pretty sure he got a couple mentions in the swim dynasty thread. Last edited by Breeze : 12-08-2023 at 08:20 AM. |

Sounds like there's just a plane flying from Anaheim to Toronto being tracked on Flight Aware and everybody is assuming it's Ohtani.

Jon Morosi was the one that reported he was on it. Now Bob Nightengale says he wasn't and he still home. Morosi is the guy when it comes to these announcement, and now has egg all over his face.

Hilarious. The baseball subreddit is melting down, calling for Jon Morosi to be banned, trying to track other flights, its madness.

I don’t know how cognizant Ohtani is of the Japanese market, but I doubt he breaks any news while the island is asleep. I think any major announcement would be made between 7-10PM Eastern

Thats a lot of money. Glad he goes to a major team because that's a guy baseball fans deserve to see in the playoffs every year. Shame we never got to see this with Trout.

Sounds like some of the money will be differed, but still that is insane money. More than the GDP of 12 countries.

Over half is deferred. The actual cost in today's estimated dollars on the contract is about $550 mil from what I've read.
If he can still pitch after TJ it should be a solid contract. |

I'd rather spend 300 mil for a pitcher and 200 mil for a batter, personally. Given that he's already 29, and going to miss the next season for his pitching at least. But the Dodgers can afford to lose him because their roster is already packed with superstars. It would be much more devastating for a team like the Jays.

$2M/year and then $680M for the 10 years after his contract ends? Interesting.
EDIT: I chuckled!

I don't think you're going to see many players willing to take a contract like that, but I could see this moving MLB to crack down on deferred money.
