Hard for there to be a QB controversy in this town, really. It's not like Sedor was playing poorly, anyhow. Heh.

As for Small... I don't think he's going to get cut, but he clearly isn't very effective for us this season, and we're going to have a look at what we're doing there. I expect Jumbo Kinney to start our next game, and maybe we'll scatter around the carries that used to go to Small elsewhere... likely to Russell Becker, our nominal third down guy.

Obviously, we have to be very happy with the way the team has played thus far – you can’t really do much better than an 8-0 record and a scoring advantage of 188 points. We’re obviously looking very sharp – but regrettably we have not been able to pull away even in our own division, where Dodge City is also 8-0, and we are lining up for a massive showdown in Week 11 (and another four weeks later).

Here’s a look at some of the key stats so far:

Code:
Front Office Football 2007 2016 Summary for Chesapeake Chili Dogs Chesapeake Chili Dogs Team Rank Rushes per Game 33.1 4 Rushing Yards 120.4 11 Yards Per Carry 3.63 30 Pass Attempts 29.5 28 Completions 18.8 25 Completion Pct. 63.6 12 Passing Yards 287.1 5 Yards Per Attempt 9.73 2 Yards Per Catch 15.31 2 Total Yardage Gained 398.0 5 3rd Down Conversions 50.0 4 Points Per Game 38.4 1 Pass Rush Pct. 21.8 1 Pass Defense Pct. 88.8 1 Turnovers 12 14 (T) Turnover Margin +9 2 (T)

The passing game has been tremendous – Sedor was playing well, and Gerhardt has been unreal in his stead. We’re spreading the ball around effectively, but we are able to pass even when it’s obvious we are going to pass – and that makes a pretty big difference.

I keep pointing to a lot of late-game crap depressing our running game stats – but the fact is, we aren’t putting together those occasional 200-yard rushing days that we did from time to time in the not too distant past. The running game is okay, but not a team strength right now – that 30th ranking in yards per carry might be overstating it a bit. I’m guessing that our typical game of 33 carries might include something like 6 carries for 10 yards at the end, when the team has folded up into a “lead-draining” mentality… if that’s true then our more reasonable average might be 27 for 110, or just about 4 yards per carry.

Code:
Opponents Team Rank Rushes per Game 22.9 6 Rushing Yards 104.6 14 (T) Yards Per Carry 4.57 25 Pass Attempts 39.6 31 Completions 19.3 9 Completion Pct. 48.6 2 Passing Yards 199.8 4 Yards Per Attempt 5.04 1 Yards Per Catch 10.38 5 Total Yardage Gained 293.5 5 3rd Down Conversions 31.5 2 Points Per Game 14.9 3 Pass Rush Pct. 12.6 7 Pass Defense Pct. 48.6 13 Turnovers 21 1

Defense against the run isn’t great, but we have been way ahead in most of our games, so we are dropping into pass setups pretty often. The key stat here, for me, is the remarkable 5.04 yards per attempt we have conceded on the year – that is just stratospherically good, and even (basically) ignores our opportunism on defense. If we truly are that tough to pass against, and we also cause more turnovers than anyone – that’s a brutally tough combination to overcome. For a team that has the lead as much as we have, to only be giving up 200 yards a game through the air is just crazy.

As noted – just off the charts good here. Too bad for Alex Gerhardt that he seems to think he’s just a minimum salary type of guy, or else he might be looking to go cash in on this success.

I can’t be happy with this production, and we will be looking to make some improvements. I think for next week, we will have Kinney in the starting role (he’s a TD machine, if nothing else) and we might rotate Russell becker in more than we have been—I’m not sure what Harry Small’s role is right now, as I’m losing faith in him as a starter and 1st and ten principal option.

Jamie Leverette has gotten a lot more looks than my gameplan seems to call for, but with nearly 11 yards per target, I’m not about to stop that. After a slow start, Burt Pearson has again regained the slot as our top guy here, but we are clearly committed to spreading it around. Even the underneath options are all effective – we have three tight ends who all contribute and play well.

Well, I think the turnaround here starts at CB, where youngsters Emmanuel White (team-leading 11 passes defensed to only 21 catches allowed) and Quentin Gailey (league-leading 6 interceptions) are proving to be a big step forward over the long-time veterans we had been using in those slots. Now, with guys like Herman Padgett, Lewis Kuehler giving us quality depth, I feel really good at this position. And 5th year man C.J. Daniels as grabbed the role of nickelback, and is proving to be very solid there, too, with 7 passes defensed of his own. We have 8 defensive backs we are very happy to get onto the field.

Up front, we’re getting solid pressure from our usual threesome – DT Bryan Lents and starting ends Kerry Meadows and Dwight Reynolds. If I’m reading the stats correctly, we are 1st in the league in both pass rushing percentage, and in passes defensed percentage (plus takeaways). Damn. I don’t think this is sustainable by any stretch, but we have been playing better than I can ever recall on defense this year.

Pretty obviously a game we ought to win. We will have RB Jumbo Kinney in as the starter and hope to get him a majority of the carries, and we expect to see rookie Skip Ogu with the ball in his hands for the first time this season. We’ll see how the tweaking goes.

Live commentary

Well, in a game where Alex Gerhardt suddenly ran into difficulty running the offense (and also decided to go inexplicably deep-pass happy) we at least get a great game from the defense to keep us ahead through three quarters. We drive for a FG early in the 4th, but a 6-point lead just doesn’t feel safe. But Doug Schwantz comes up with a big interception while Seal Beach is near midfield, and sets us up for the ice-away score. However, Gerhardt tries a bomb again, then gets sacked, and we find ourselves outside FG range – Rose’s try from 55 falls short, and they get their shot once again.

And as the clock dwindles to under three minutes, SLB connects on two big plays to get first and goal. A TD likely gives them the win here, so it’s on our defense. We stop them on first down with a short completion, but commit defensive holding and they get a do-over. Another 2-yard catch makes it second and short. Their FB dropped the next short pass, and it’s 3rd and goal from the 2. Another short pass, again to the FB, and Vesser makes the key tackle to hold them at the 2. Fourth and goal. We are looking for the run here.

It’s another short pass, it’s complete again, and this time they are in for the score and their first lead, 14-13. We have two minutes. One stupid bomb and one drop by Burt, and we turn it over on downs. Trap game identified, trap closed, trap victim caught. Ballgame.

So, our perfect season is out the door, and now we have to travel to play 9-0 Dodge City, where our division hopes might go down the drain entirely. This is not so good – it’s looking like the #5 seed is our destiny, unless was can rise up and sting Dodge City head-to-head.

Uh, yeah. Big game.

It was a big game anyway, but last week’s flop actually raised the stakes, in my view. Were we both undefeated, we could sort of afford to lose this one, but win the rematch at our place, and have a shot to come away with the division. Now, if we lose this one, things are **way** out of our hands, and we are most likely looking at a late-season coast into the #5 seed.

So, buck up fellas, and see if we can pull it off. I think we need to catch a break or two to win on the road without Sedor, but it’s not impossible. Dodge City is very good, but not flawless.

Live Commentary

Dodge City gets the first chance, - they move to midfield, and bury a punt at our 2. At least we stopped them, I suppose. We stay on the ground, and earn a three-and-out. They quickly move down the field – fueled primarily by those annoying little plays in Solevision where your (my) pass rusher is noted for making a huge move, and then the QB goes right ahead and connects for the big pass anyhow. Some luck, we trail 7-0.

We respond with a good drive, we manage to recover a fumble from Jumbo Kinney, and connect to Kent Fields for a TD pass to even things up. Good drive for us, including a couple solid run plays, which I think we will need to keep in this game. However, the DGC offense is just awfully tough to stop – we get lucky to hold them to a short FG, but it’s clear that we are really outgunned here. Our best chance to win here, I think, it probably by getting a couple of big plays (turnovers or returns) because I just don’t see us keeping pace with them. Ugh.

We go for it on 4th and 1 from their 41, and Jumbo up the gut is just barely good enough – kudos to FB Bert Berube for the key block, as the time-tested I-formation does its job, and we keep it going. Pretty high drama for the middle of the second quarter. We cap off the drive with another TD pass from Gerhardt, and find ourselves ahead 14-10.

Short-lived, though. Dodge City is relentless, and hits another bomb to set up a short TD plunge to reclaim the lead with 2 minutes left before the half. We came close to stopping them, but they converted their third downs and then hit us big. We have a mini-drive ended by an interception, they return the favor, but the clock runs out before we can get anywhere. 17-14 at the half – we’re still in it, but I still feel like we need to catch a break.

**exhales**

We come out from halftime, and stick to the ground game to churn out a couple nice first downs. Two big catches from Burt set us up in goal line territory, and Jumbo Kinney the TD machine pounds it in on the second try. We again have the lead, and will send out the defense. And we once again can barely cause any resistance – it’s a seemingly effortless drive for a TD from their juggernaut offense, and they reclaim the lead, 24-21. Our much-revered defense is barley slowing down their receivers downfield, it seems.

Pressure is on our offense to keep pace, and we start well with a good strike to George Ellis to get into DGC territory right away. But a bad pass from Alex puts us in 3rd and 8, and then he gives up a second interception to fritter away the scoring opportunity. I don’t feel like we can afford that at all – not it’s on the defense to keep us in this thing. Falling behind 10 points to an offense we cannot stop isn’t a recipe for good things.

DGC is quickly across midfield, but a dropped pass forces third and long, and we hold for once – so we dodge their bullet here. We start from our own 10, but can’t get things going, and punt it right back to them. However, they fumble the punt – and WR Jamie Leverette is there for the recovery, giving us new life at the DGC 30. We clearly need to cash this one in – there are 12 minutes left in the 4th quarter, and a TD here could give us a 4 point lead, at least keeping us in the back-and-forth mode.

A run and a dropped pass put us in 3rd and 6, but Burt comes up with the big catch to keep things live at the 14. Kinney again gets a couple of tries to take it in, but it works – and we take the all-important 28-24 lead. The fans are definitely getting their money’s worth today.

Dodge City opens up with two successive penalties, and immediate faces 1st and 20 – what a great chance for our defense to clamp down and stop them. Two receptions later, they have first and ten – so opportunity knocked, and we didn’t answer. We then force a 3rd and 10 – another great chance to shut them down. But a 23 yard catch for Isaac Mansour renders that another missed opportunity. (I know you think I’m writing this stuff after the fact, but I’m not) With 5:14 on the clock, they have first and goal from our 1 yard line. I honestly can’t understand how they only have 24 points – it just seems like every single play is a 24 yard completion… Anyway, Bill Sampson scrambles it in on the first play, and they retake the lead.

We convert a first down, but then get our first “familiar” of the game – a very bad omen. A pointless screen pass forces 3rd and 7, and then we miss on a long one to Burt. I guess we punt here and hope for an unlikely stop, but this feels like it might have been the whimper, rather than the bang.

2:33 on the clock, Dodge City probably wins with a first down. We force 3rd and 2… could we possibly hold here? Any chance? Richie Shaw comes up with the tackle, and we stop them at their 21 – looks like we will get that last chance after all.

2:04 left (nice clock management there) and we have it at our own 47, trailing by 3 points. I don’t want any part of overtime here, I can say that right now. Gerhardt scrambles for 8, but we give 5 back with a penalty, and quickly face 3rd and 7. Incomplete pass – 4th and 8. Oh nice – here’s another chance for a stupid AI decision to fuck me right in front of god and everyone.

Yup, we send out the punter. 1:22 left on the clock, we have used at least one of our time outs, and we choose to punt from midfield. Awesome.

Dodge City essentially takes a knee three times and finishes up the win. Well done. We’re fucked.

Week 12: New Jersey (5-5) at Chesapeake (8-2)

We’re in a fairly low-pressure situation here, I think – we can probably limp home to something like 10 or 11 wins without a lot of effort, and since it’s so unlikely we could get back into the picture for a bye week, we have nothing to gain by being the 13-3 #5 seed. So, not much to worry about here. Alex Gerhardt back in the saddle, and expect to see a young Skip Ogu getting the rock a few times too.

No other major changes to the gameplan or the personnel – we’ll just try to tread water and see where we are next time we face Dodge City.

In the first half, we are completely outplayed by Jersey – and are very lucky to trail by only a 7-0 margin. Skip Ogu has three carries for zero yards and a costly fumble lost at in the red zone – not a way to earn yourself a lot more looks, there, rook.

Another red zone turnover keeps us at zero after a good opening drive in the third quarter, and New Jersey has a chance to really put this game out of hand for us. They can’t move the ball, but we give it right back to them with another fumble at our 20 yard line, and it’s quickly 10-0. We drive in response, and look pretty sharp in putting up our first score – a short plunge from Skip Ogu.

Jersey makes the big play in the fourth quarter, but a penalty calls back the likely game-clinching 80 yard TD pass, and we have new life after barely holding on the ensuing 3rd and 20. And while we don’t have a lot going right today, we do set up with a possession to take the lead at the two-minute warning on a TD run from Kinney. We come up with a big sack on 4th down to push the ball over back to us, and cinch a win that we really didn’t deserve today.

Sedor is cleared for duty for next week, and hopefully that will add a bit more consistency to our offense. We will continue contract talks with Alex Gerhardt on an extension, which we hope to wrap up before too long. He’s been solid for us, despite the obvious dropoff since his first couple of starts.

So – in short, we get some late-game heroics in Madison to come away with a win in a game that we very well could have lost. Then we manage some late-game anti-heroics to choke away a game that we certainly could have won in Bar Harbor. So it goes.

Dodge City was **tied** a week back, but now that they have a game and a half on us, we’re just out of the picture, and are destined to be wild card fodder. We mostly knew that already, but now the math is even more daunting.

Week 15: Dodge City (12-0-1) at Chesapeake (10-3)

Well a few weeks ago this was looking like a **huge** game, when both teams were really cooking along, and both undefeated. DGS suffered one tie since then, but we have limped to three losses (including one at DGC) and are now essentially out of the division race, but assured a wild card. So, barring a really odd finish to the season, this game is basically meaningless for both teams.

Anyway – probably for the best, I have a crash-to-desktop error and cannot watch this horror in solevision. That should be a sign that I ought to just skip it entirely and just go to the box score, but instead I have a look at the game log.

Heh. We open up a 21-0 lead by the end of the first quarter as we catch every break possible. If this game really mattered, I’d be setting up for massive heartbreak here – but as it stands, perhaps we will get an inexplicable walkover here just to ground in the pain of the games we lost to put us out of reach already.

And the beat(ing) goes on. Holy shit. Wish this game counted for something.

Our main focus now is getting healthy for the playoffs, where we will hope to get another shot at Dodge City. Regrettably, we won’t get them at home like this.

We get a new deal worked out with QB Alex Gerhardt, but still have some haggling to do – I’d prefer not to have to tag Sedor, but his demands are pretty astronomical.

[u]Week 16: Sam’s Town (4-10) at Chesapeake (11-3)

The only thing that can change our fortune here is a win and a loss by Dodge City, and then we’d need the same thing again in week 17. So, basically, this is a meaningless game for us, barring a very odd endgame. We have starters in, though. Hope that doesn’t backfire.

Nice game for RB Skip Ogu, who posted a couple more rushing TDs as he carried a fair share of the rushing load this week. We were pretty mistake-prone overall, even setting up the only scores of the week for Sam’s Town with a 38-yard Sdeor scramble that turned into a safety due to holding in the endzone, and an ensuing short-field FG. But by and large, an excellent game from both sides of the ball.

And well, well, well. Dodge City loses on the road in new jersey, and we suddenly have a serious division race. As usual, both wild card teams will come from our division, but the seedings are really up for grabs:

Code:
Code:
NC East W L T Pct PF PA Conf Div Dodge City 12 2 1 .833 442 345 9-1-1 4-1 Chesapeake 12 3 0 .800 486 224 9-2 4-1 South Carolina 12 3 0 .800 427 302 8-3 2-3 Portland 4 11 0 .267 319 391 3-8 0-5

So, this week we wrap up the season with intra-divisional games… and we are home to Portland. Dodge City hosts South Carolina in a HUGE HUGE HUGE game, as we actually have some hope to get the top seed and bye week after all. Since we pwned South Carolina head-to-head this week, they are not our worry – so it’s simple: if we win, and Dodge City loses, we take the division and the #1 seed. Otherwise, we’re a wild card and working our way through the hard way.

We’d rather control our own destiny, but given that we were 2 ½ games down with 3 to play, this is as good a scenario as we could have hoped for.

Week 17: Portland (4-11) at Chesapeake (12-3) and South Carolina (12-3) at Dodge City (12-2-1)

Well, for our interests, these games count equally important. Wins by both Chesapeake and South Carolina are our only ticket to the sweet, sweet bye week and home field advantage. Anything else, and we hit the road for three games. That sucks – but it’s the price we pay for the artificial joys of division-based forced rivalries.

Anyway… I’ll do dual-game live commentary from my owners’ box seat in Solevision, assuming the game doesn’t crash on me again.

Live Commentary

In advance of the game, I would note an utter absence of my usual sense that I’m in for a royal screwing. I don’t know why – it’[s not that I **believe** we will come out as the division champs, but just that I don’t have the itch that I often do when anticipating a brutally difficult loss. One may indeed be in the offing, but I don’t smell it yet.

Portland is moving the ball in their opening drive, but fumble the ball to us, and we cash in for a TD pass to George Ellis to take the 7-0 lead. I see that Dodge City has also taken a 7-0 lead in its game – I still can’t tell whether South Carolina decided to “tank” this game and insert all scrub players, as their owner publicly pledged to do.

South Carolina pulls even with Dodge City at 7-7, so it looks like a ballgame out there. Good to see. Portland is doing their share, too – pulling even with us at 7-7 and with their offense in full gear so far.

We go ahead on a Sedor plunge, and manage to slow Portland down enough to force two (questionable) punts from fairly deep into our territory, and lead 14-7 late in the 2nd quarter. We finish off the first half with a drive for a FG and a 17-7 lead – not out of reach, but our offense is playing pretty well, and the running game is looking okay behind Jumbo Kinney and, lo and behold, Harry Small.

Meanwhile, Dodge City takes a 10-7 lead toward the half in their game – so that one is still close, at least. But South Carolina tags on a TD to take a 14-10 lead (I missed the detail, it was either right at the end of the half, or a KO return to open the second half). And very quickly, South Carolina opens up a 21-10 lead, following what must have been a turnover.

Meanwhile, we get Burt Pearson into the endzone on our opening drive, and go up 24-7. At this point, things are set up to either fall right into place for us – or potentially to develop into yet another season-ending super-sting. I understandably refuse to celebrate anything yet.

No sooner do I start musing about having our game wrapped up than we yield a 39-yard TD pass to get Portland back in our game. We respond with a drive for a FG, making it 27-14, still a solid lead, but not out of reach yet. South Carolina has just tacked on another TD, and they lead their game 28-10. Wow. Dodge City wastes no time, and they quickly make that score 28-18 – so both games are two-score margins now.

We apparently think our game is too easy, and a Jumbo fumble sets up Portland with a short field. Meanwhile, Dodge City posts a KO return TD after a SCA field goal, making that game now 31-25. Yikes. On 3rd and 10, we give up the 19 yard TD pass to Portland, and they pull within six points as well. As we hit the early fourth quarter, these two games are almost playing out in parallel – things were just looking too secure, I guess.

We move the ball well, overcome a key holding call with a Sedor strike to TE Cooper, and we get George Ellis (big game today) into the endzone for a huge score. A Jumbo Kinney plunge for the conversion makes it 35-21. Meanwhile, nearly as importantly, South Carolina has tacked on another FG to take a 9-point edge at Dodge City. We can’t just watch that game, but it’s going the right way at least.

Dodge City returns the favor with their own FG, and are back within one score. An interception from Quentin Gailey probably seals our game, as we take the ball back with a 14 point lead and about four minutes left to play.

And with 2:31 on the clock in Dodge City, South Carolina has just kicked a FG to take a 9-point lead themselves. Wow.

We take the ball on downs and wrap things up against Portland, and I switch “channels” to see the wrap-up in Dodge City, where it’s still a two-score margin. Dodge City is moving the ball, but they simply don’t have time to get the job done, and they fall short, giving South Carolina the win.

And with the 13-3 record, the tiebreaker over South Carolina, the division title, the bye week, and the home field advantage throughout the playoffs. WOW.

And so, this time, we catch **all** the late-season breaks, and manage to get away with our sloppiness in the mid-season. If this weren’t a lifeless little computer game, I might be writing prose about how our unexpected throttling of the Vigilantes shook the life out of them, and sent them spiraling into the abyss of the wild card. Alas, it sure looked that way. Whatever the explanation, we get some much-needed rest, and will get to watch to see who earns the right to come visit us at our place. As for the regular season – mission accomplished.

So, here’s this big picture for another regular season. We looked unstoppable early on, skipped several beats in the middle of the season, and then finished with a big rally and got the help we needed to end up in the #1 seed. That’s all we can ask from a regular season, really – that and health, which we also have.

Code:
Chesapeake Chili Dogs Team Rank Rushes per Game 32.8 4 Rushing Yards 126.4 10 Yards Per Carry 3.85 30 Pass Attempts 31.8 26 Completions 19.6 23 Completion Pct. 61.7 15 Passing Yards 279.7 5 Yards Per Attempt 8.79 3 Yards Per Catch 14.25 2 Total Yardage Gained 395.5 6 3rd Down Conversions 48.2 5 Points Per Game 32.6 1 Pass Rush Pct. 20.3 1 Pass Defense Pct. 72.7 1 Turnovers 24 14 (T) Turnover Margin +13 1 (T)

Well, the #1 scoring offense in the league, and we have to be pretty glad about that. The air game was very crisp and efficient – 8.8 yards per attempt is a solid ratio, and will keep the chains moving. I’m disappointed with our yardage per carry, but I attribute part of that drop to seeing an awful lot of late-game carries destined to fail in games where we had a big lead. The “lead-draining” offense also works well to depress offensive stats, when you run 6 or 9 such plays at the end of the game. Anyway – I’m not thrilled with the running game, but overall we can’t be upset here.

Code:
Opponents Team Rank Rushes per Game 21.7 3 Rushing Yards 91.5 4 Yards Per Carry 4.22 18 Pass Attempts 37.4 31 Completions 19.6 7 (T) Completion Pct. 52.5 1 Passing Yards 209.4 5 Yards Per Attempt 5.60 2 Yards Per Catch 10.67 11 Total Yardage Gained 289.0 2 3rd Down Conversions 28.4 1 Points Per Game 15.3 2 (T) Pass Rush Pct. 13.0 5 (T) Pass Defense Pct. 55.1 22 Turnovers 37 1

Here is where the big turnaround came. That figure of 5.6 yards per pass attempt is a huge, huge improvement over previous years for us – we got production from our starting cornerbacks like we have really never seen before, and it flowed through the whole defense. We were average against the run in yards per carry, but with big leads that number gets silly. I don’t think we are a pushover there, and I have a lot of faith in our defense – I have **liked** my defense before, but never really believed in them.

That was one hell of a run in the early season. We are playing pretty well right now, but those first 8 games were just unconscious.

Code:

No complaints here – it looks like our offense just dictates a few turnovers along the way, and Gerhardt had one bad game in his run, but overall we are going to beat a lot of teams with numbers like these.

Code:
Rushing Pos Att Yards Y/Att TD Fum 37 J. Kinney RB 277 1083 3.91 11 6 20 H. Small RB 124 430 3.47 2 3 16 B. Sedor QB 46 204 4.43 3 3 43 R. Becker RB 45 199 4.42 1 1 **Team --- 525 2023 3.85 20 22 $$Opp --- 347 1464 4.22 7 22

So, Jumbo Kinney tops the 1,000 yard mark, and also gets into the end zone a fairly shocking 15 times – it looks like he is an asset to the offense, and ought to continue to develop. Not that we couldn’t use another player, but he’s a keeper. Russell Becker continues to chip in as a utility back, but is ticked off about not starting and is very likely out after this year.

Harry Small? I don’t know. He was pretty effective the preceding two years. I don’t know what to expect there – he’s cheap, and has been pretty good. Would be tough to just dump him, it seems.

In the early going, young Jamie Leverette was posting oddly big numbers – he cooled off, but still posted 8 total TDs on the year, second highest on the team. Burt Pearson did step into his star target role in time, and in the end put up another brilliant season. In the late season especially, he had a couple of games where he looked just unstoppable. To have six primary targets in the attack all over 8 yards a target makes us pretty tough to defend.

Nobdy gets the gaudy tackle numbers on this defense – Matt Sheldon is the starter at MLB, but due to injuries and deliberate rotations, we see lots of guys in and out.

At defensive end, we got the first bona fide star-quality stats from Kerry Meadows – double digit sacks and an impressive 37 hurries makes him a difference-maker. I dropped the role for Dwight Reynolds later in the season, but he remains very effective against the pass as well. Bryan Lents suffered a ratings drop in the offseason, but put together another excellent season for us this year.

In the secondary – Gailey and White look like the bookends we would have dreamed of landing. Gailey seems like a playmaker, but is also solid in coverage – White posted 19 passes defensed, which is only a few short of the best total we’ve ever seen on this team (Herman Padgett had 21 last year). Both these guys can play the run, can make a play on the ball, and can cover a top receiver. We’re a different team with them in the fold – look at the numbers for our safeties, all three of whom posted a PD% number over 80, as did C.J. Daniels, who was slotted at the nickel back most of the year. This group is suddenly a team strength, rather than just an area where we were “good enough” all these years.

Monday we will host South Carolina -- bad news is they are a 13-3 team, good news is that we handled them twice in the regular season, earning the tiebreaker that made thee difference between two home games and three road games.

Divisional Playoff – South Carolina at Chesapeake

You know the deal here – SCA was part of the triad of power teams from our division, we only won the division based on beating them head to head. They have superstar caliber players at QB, RB, and WR – the standard “triplets” formula that has made for some of the best offenses in football. They are very solid everywhere on offense, and are pretty decent everywhere on defense.

We have played well against them this year, and I think the matchup actually works pretty well for us overall – but this is not easy game. Whoever wins this game will be a strong favorite to represent the conference in the title game. I expect a good deal of scoring, and probably a pretty close game. Let’s go.

Live commentary

Our first drive leads to a punt, after Sedor is sacked on third down from midfield. Not a three and out, but not seven-zero either. We return the favor, and force them to punt from midfields as well, though they execute better and pin us deep. So far, we look solid against their brilliant RB Grady Milliken, who has yet to turn a carry into anything much.

While we have their rushing game bottled up, Dixon Zhao is getting them downfield for a good drive, but early in the second quarter we come up with a fumble near our goal line and dodge a bullet to stay scoreless. We march for the long drive, lead by WR Burt Pearson, and take it in for the score to assume the lead – that’s a pretty big turnaround in what might not be as high-scoring an affair as it was billed to be.

We force another punt – the second time today we allowed a pretty long completion on third down that was still just short of the first down marker – and are again pinned back deep. Our starting field position has just been atrocious today. A few quick snaps downfield from Sedor get us out of the shadow of our own goalposts, at least. Harry Small plunges in with it to cap off the drive, and that makes two TD drives of over 95 yards – no reward for the good ball-control play by the SCA offense and special teams today.

In the third quarter, we force a punt and get a nice return from Skip Ogu to put us into solid field position for a change – well, our 22. But the first play is a Jumbo fumble, and SCA takes over deep to gain new life. We hold them to three and out, and a 41 yard kick – they are on the board for a 14-3 margin. But we respond with a TD drive again capped off by Pearson, and the lead stretches to 21-3. Our offense is looking very crisp right now, and the defense is more than holding its own.

SCA responds with a nice drive of their own, punctuated by a very ballsy 11-yard pass on a 3rd and 1, and end up in the end zone for the first time, but with no 2-pointer they settle for a 21-9 deficit. The 4th quarter starts, and we would love a nice, long possession and score here. Instead, they recover an onside kick, and get the chance to replay their scoring assault. But soon after, there’s a jailbreak after QB Zhao, who gets smothered and fumbles the ball away – S Jeff McCartney comes up with another huge play for us in a big game, and it looks like Zhao is hurt.

And now, working with a short field, we grind out two first downs on six plays to get into the red zone, and then Sedor finds Pearson for a third strike of the day. That ought to seal this one, as it puts things pretty far away from SCA, and we’re closing in on 8 minutes left already.

Sure enough, Dixon Zhao has been replaced in the game – so they will need some crazy late game heroics from a rusty backup. On 4th and 10, we add insult to injury with another sack-and-fumble combo, and take over deep in SCA territory. Sedor again finds Pearson for the score on third down, this one is over. We see that #2 seed White Rock is winning fairly easily, too, and they shape up as our visitor for next week. Just hope we can avoid injuries down the stretch in this one.

I fear that we're overmatched in this one and will lose our second FOFL Bowl in the last three seasons, but we'll give it a go.

Yeah, a tough one to swallow. Not like you can expect to win if the other team's QB goes 33 of 35 on the day, but they reeled it in and played a very conservative short game all day long (by design).

Lot of fluky little things, though.

Burt Pearson makes a huge play in overtime to haul in a 36 yard catch to get us into FG position... but gets the ball stripped and they take over, and naturally proceed to march for the winning score.

As I said at the FOFL boards, I'm not going to try to claim that the better team won today. If we'd played Chesapeake 100 times, I suspect that they'd win 2/3 or more of the games. We executed well today, and got just enough breaks to win. The Chili Dogs are still one of the best franchises around.

Chesapeake Chili Dogs, 2017 Season

Welcome back for a renewal of this career thread. We are into the early offseason, and candidly there just isn’t too much to talk about. I’ll post here to catch things up.

Retirements – we have a pretty veteran team, but only had one retirement. MLB Doug McKenzie, a guy we grabbed back in 2009 right after he had an offseason “breakout” and settled in as our long-term man in the middle, finally hung up the cleats. This isn’t a major surprise – we tried to deal him last year as his starting job has passed on to young Matt Sheldon, but there wasn’t meaningful interest as he was pretty clearly wrapping up his career. No worries here.

The loss of McKenzie does give us only five players at the LB position – so we will need a body or two there. But it’s not a top priority, exactly, to add a starting-caliber player – I am very happy with the players we have at LB right now, and think that with the players we have (and possibly a rotation in from one of our run-stuffing safeties as needed) we’re basically covered. So, maybe a late-round draft pick on a special teams type, or an affinity guy, will be in order. If a LB comes up as a BPA candidate early, that’s certainly fine, too, but we’re not under real pressure.

Our other major personnel move was a trade of RT Donovan Webster – the impact run-blocking lineman we inked as a free agent last year. (Yet again, the dividends of some sweat equity there – we were nowhere near as cap-flexible as most other teams, but for some reason we were able to land two of the biggest impact players available with aggressive bids, while other teams seemed reluctant to pour their massive cap space into the best players available) Anyway, while the 6th year Webster would have made a perfectly solid starter for us this year, his base salary was $14 million and his renegotiated base would have left us pretty cap-stretched for this season. We deal him to Keene for a fairly late second round pick in this year’s draft, essentially replacing the second rounder we lost in our deal for CB White last year.

So, past the loss of T Webster (time-splitter at RT last year) and LB McKenzie (basically our #4 LB last year) we will return pretty much everyone this year. That means that of the 30-35 major contributors on a given football team, we will have all but two back in essentially the same slots as last year. Maybe third-down RB Russell Becker counts as a loss, too, but we’re still looking very very stable this season.

However, this also means that we won’t be making any meaningful additions this offseason unless they are by trade (which I judge to be pretty doubtful). We are cap-strapped, but it’s a good year for that – the FA market looks atrociously weak, so I’d much rather be cap-strapped and loaded with talent than $40 million or more under the cap with nobody worth a damn to spend it on. (And that is exactly where a few teams in this league stand right now)

So… the draft nominally starts Thursday, Nov 8. Until then we will see picks made in trickles, I suspect, but at 1.31 we will be waiting a while. In the early FA stages, I don’t expect any additions as we are just trying to manage our cap now. Once we get under the cap, we will probably work out a few deals with affinity guys and our own RFAs, but I don’t expect any headline grabbers.

So, not a lot ahead… probably nothing of real import to mention until we’re on the draft clock.

Here’s the snapshot of what we think our lineup looks like at the moment:

We are pretty comfortably two deep at every position except offensive tackle (and technically SLB, though I have plenty of guys who are fine there if needed).

I think we will have the luxury of thinking fairly long term with our draft picks this year – a tackle would be fine, but I’m generally not inclined to target the OL early in the draft. Another DB, RB or WR would be fine, too, but none are screaming voids in our lineup as it sits.

Okay, so I'm a little low tech. *shurg*

Basically, I keep a monstrous Excel document for each of my MP teams, in which I try to track stuff that isn't all that easy to watch in-game. My main roster listing makes it pretty simple to plan for and manage affinities and conflicts, and off to the side I have little notes posted about position switching, combine-rating correlations, and so forth. Then, I have a couple of table that help me visualize the roster -- one just seeing how many guys are *really* locked into roster slots, and then a table like the one above visualizing my depth chart by position. I keep one page like that intact from each previous offseason, and have some separate worksheets where I store historical information about my players' ratings and movement thereof.

None of it is terribly sophisticated, but all in one place it's a very handy little roster management tool, and keeps me from having a ton of little scraps of paper lying around reminding me to put in a FA offer on so-and-so and having to open the game every ten minutes to see whether I have three or four outside linebackers.

Cap Issues Resolved, we’re moving on…

Okay, free agency is well underway, and we have finally worked out our issues with DE Roderick Burgess. The run-stopping lineman has worked out a new deal with a $15m bonus, which should essentially keep him with us for the next two seasons. This gives us a pretty solid four-deep rotation at DE (Burgess could also play DT if needed, with his skills) and likely takes the DL off the table as a target slot for our top draft pick this year.

We have done our rookie interviews, and once again basically revealed to myself that I know far too little about this still-evolving game. My scout (possibly the best overall scout in the league – we’re nothing if not extravagant spenders in the front office) is offering me precious little guidance on actually finding players that he likes in the draft. Presumably this is largely because I am just picking the wrong players to go out an interview. Anyway… I don’t really have anyone in mind to target for the pick at 1.31 anymore… making it incrementally more likely that we will just seek to trade the pick away and try to land a productive player instead. More to come on that front, perhaps.

Top pick dealt for Veteran RB

With out first round pick approaching, I liked a number of rookie players, but felt that we got a better bang for our buck with a trade – so we dealt away the 1.31 pick to land 9th year RB Quinn Vinatieri:

He’s with us signed for two pretty affordable years, and he ought to be the most talented guy we have ever fielded at the RB position. With my concern about our ground game looking a little lackluster last season, and with young Jumbo Kinney being very limited in his ability to carry the primary load for a team (as he suffers from the apparently wide-ranging endurance problems plaguing running backs in the FOF universe) this seems like a pretty meaningful impact addition for our team. I am not worried about the passing game, and adding QV ought to take our rushing game up a substantial notch this year. I’m pleased with the move.

Our second round pick will likely get triggered today (Saturday) and we have players from a number of different positions – this may well be a BPA type pick, though my ordering of my top choices is essentially need-driven. After that, we wait two full rounds to pick again – so the 2.26 (acquired by our trade of T Webster) will basically be our only early selection this year.

Chesapeake lands OT with second round pick

We had a bit of a quandary with our second round pick, as my BPA list dictated an offensive tackle and there was one guy left I felt was worth targeting – but a QB fell a lot farther than I had expected, and I was getting tempted there. In the end, QB Bert Rasheed went a few slots ahead of us, and that obviated the struggle.

We land OT Kyle Wolf, a guy who my scout didn’t like much (great), but whose combines were all above average, and whom I expect will slide over to LT and hopefully become our long-term answer there. He’s a bit more run blocker than pass protector, which I don’t mind. Hopefully, our scout just missed on him and he pans out to be a pretty solid starter for us. (My list of scout-endorsed players is a perilously thin one from this year, so I will mostly end up drafting non-interviewed players I reckon).

Second draft pick yields needed LB help

With our second selection in the draft, in the late fourth round, we landed LB Aaron Arnold. I suspect that his skill set – pretty decent against the run, possibly strong in coverage, and weak in the pass rush – makes him pretty well suited for a backup role at MLB in our 4-3 front.

LB was the one position where we were (before this pick) actually short of a legal roster, with only 5 guys on the team. My expectation is that we will probably spend one of our two 5th round picks at LB as well (there are two or three guys we still like a bit out there) and we’ll probably end up carrying two rookies into the season there. We are generally pretty young at LB now, but it’s good to have a little depth even when the starters are solid.

We have four picks in the later rounds, and since my scout hasn’t really identified anyone we have particularly high hopes for, we’ll just be casting a net looking for marginal contributors wherever we might find them. We might be targeting one or two “practice squad” types in the last round or two as well, as I don’t think we will actually have room to carry more than four or five rookies on the roster into the season. So, more to come there.

Two More Draft Picks

With our two fifth round picks, I try to fill out the roster a bit more – no great and high hopes here, just a couple of possible marginal fits.

QB Emmitt Barker graded out as pretty fast at the combine (clocked at 4.58) and his skill set suggests a pretty competent short-pass type of guy with wheels. We don’t currently have a QB younger than 7th year on the roster, so we will give him a look, and have trade-blocked our current 3rd string QB Jim Baker.

LB Bo Randle is the complement to our earlier pick of LB Aaron Arnold. Arnold lists at SLB, but seems better suited to play inside – Randle is a pass-rushing and coverage guy slotted at MLB, so we will plan to move him outside. If he holds a fair share of his apparent ratings, I see him being a useful reserve for passing situations, or against pass-heavy offenses.

We hold our own pick in round six (though I’m trying to deal it away), and will be targeting “practice squad” players with our two seventh rounders (via trade).

6th round pick

With our last meaningful draft pick, I grab FB Jon O’Neil, a combine skipper with some decent apparent skills in blocking and blitz pickup, basically the portfolio I’m looking for from the position. With Bert Berube, our current starter, being a pretty marginal guy on a ratings slide, O’Neil has a shot to make the team as a starter for us – I think FB is the only position on this team where that’s true at this point in the draft, fortunately. We’ll give him a look, no serious risk if he doesn’t stick.

We will load up the practice squad in the 7th round, and likely end up grabbing a handful of unsigned rookies in search of that elusive creeper type.

Depth Chart Taking Shape

Today, we’ll see the beginnings of the after-draft free agency, and we will be putting the finishing touches onto our roster. As we head into this stage, I usually try to have a pretty clear picture of where we are roster-wise… if only so I know who might get displaced from the roster in the event that we actually do land a keepable guy in the after-draft market (and every year I seem to pick up a guy there whom I like enough to want to hold onto).

Here’s my snapshot as we stand right now:

So, as I see it, we have 51 slots essentially “full” from our eventual 53-man roster. In that count, I am assuming that all our rookie draft picks (before the 7th round) will be signed and retained, and that only one of the two fullbacks we have will make the team – whether it’s Berube or O’Neal doesn’t matter for that count, really.

So, the guys on the “bubble” are basically:

RB Harry Small and RB Emmitt Small – battling for the #3 job this year, very similar ratings profiles, Emmitt is a mentor and may have the edge despite our decent history with Harry (incidentally, I am counting one of these two guys as part of my 51 slots)

RB Skip Ogu – the Flyin’ Hawai’ian decent young utility back and return man, but probably not good enough to get any carries for this team

WR Nolan Bellevue – low ratings, but still creeping slightly, I think he has a decent shot to stick just because we are only 4 deep at WR without him

C Wendell Lambeau – solid veteran C who can play several roles, but squeezed to #2 on depth chart by blossoming young Willie McGregor, longshot

CB Leland Tellez – he is on this list pretty much every year, and always seems to make it onto the team in the end, a decent reserve CB and return man, a strong affinity, and a good cohesion help

My best guess is that if I had to make the call right now, I’d probably end up carrying four RBs (both Smalls, or possibly Emmitt and Ogu), WR Nolan Bellevue, and CB Tellez. I think Tellez would be the first to lose his job if a rookie jumps up and shows a lot in camp.

Another possibility is that we see a massive erosion from a veteran player like 13th year CB Lewis Kuehler, making him unworthy of any playing time – and that would put him on the cut list, and free up a slot for another player somewhere (maybe just Tellez).

Anyway – that’s basically where we stand heading into late free agency. I’m comfy with the roster, for certain, and just tweaking the edges at this point.

Training Camp Results Shed Light

We have come through training camp, and have a few new perspectives.

First – our secondary is aging, and rapidly. We have two very good young corners in White and Gailey, and a nice solid nickelback in CJ Daniels – and that’s a good thing. Because our veterans who have made this the most stable unit on the team are starting to show their age – we got age-related drops from CB Herman Padgett (10th year), CB Lewis Kuehler (12th year), and S Doug Schwantz (9th year). We are going to be okay for right now, I think – only Kuehler is in jeopardy of being cut – but in the next season or two we probably need to bring in one or two quality players at DB.

Next – fortunately, our veteran RB acquisition Quinn Vinatieri looks like he is up to the task for this year – the 9th year man managed to get through camp without any ratings hit at all, to my surprise. he charts for us at 72/72, and ought to be a major addition to our offense.

Also – our top rookie pick LT Kyle Wolf took a 2-point drop in camp, which isn’t a good sign. But at 33/69, we can still hope that he develops into a passable starter, maybe a guy with ratings into the 50s. Not all hope is lost. MLB Aaron Arnold was a hold in camp, and probably locks up the backup MLB role for this season, while SLB Bo Randle appears to be several rounds of development away from being the pass rusher we had hoped for – probably not a long term keeper. Our FB Jon O’Neal dropped 5 points in camp, and the FB job is still really wide open. Mixed bag with rookies.

Vacuous preseason ahead, and then the real cutdown starts.

Yawn.

Online Box Score

Two touchdowns and two fumbles for RB Quinn Vinatieri. Sedor mostly sits. Nothing much to see here.

Tragically poor effort from backup QB Gerhardt. Everybody else was sterling.

Season Opener At Hand

We have made our final cut-downs, and we’re ready for our opening game at Dodge City. DGC was the strange story last year – starting out with a long unbeaten run, getting all the way to 12-0-1, and then losing four straight including a **wild card** game as they tumbled all the way to third in the division. Ouch. Their signature lately has been the air game, but this offseason they traded away both starting WRs to go younger – I expect they will be a bit easier to contain now, despite still having a dangerous QB, and we are solid favorites on the road here.

In roster news, I can’t really explain how it happened, but once again [url=http://www.thefofl.com/players/player.php?player=7962]Leland Tellez[url] has made the final roster of 53. I didn’t think that he would, but basically the complete dissolution of Lewis Kuehler made it easier for Tellez to stick – he’s a strong affinity guy, with a little bit of return skill, and rather little else – so this is not a serious contributor. But every year he seems to make it in off the bubble.

We also kept four RBs, including the currently inactive Harry Small. I was open to finding a free agent here or there to go after, but was unimpressed and doubt we will be making moves there after all. At FB, second year man Bert Berube made the cut and will start, after rookie Jon O’Neal had a terrible camp.

Today, we kick things off, and get on with the regular season.

Week 1: Chesapeake at Dodge City

Nothing silly here, we will play a pretty vanilla gameplan, and I expect good things here, even on the road. We will be running a bit more than we generally did last year, and I hope that pays off with increased efficiency in the passing game.

SO, we get pretty much the game we hoped for. Defense played very well, Sedor and the offense clicked nicely, and we put this one in the W column pretty early. The one TD drive for DGC came in “junk time” – basically we had this one under control.

Solid.

Yeah, I guess that was disappointing -- while it nice to have a guy who can carry the load for us, it would also be nice to have said guy post more than two yards a carry. If the red bars are a fair indication, he will see his share in time. One thing about getting way ahead in a game is that Rex defenses (and most human defenses) start to expect the run a lot, so if you go to it, it's not all that effective. I'm figuring that was largely at work here, so I'm not too upset... I'll take a fairly stodgy with-a-20-point-lead-offense in exchange for getting 20 points ahead in every game.

Another related note -- WR Burt Pearson will miss a few games with a minor injury. Looks like Kent Fields will be starting, and look for super-sub Jamie Leverette to play in the slot a good deal. I'd expect both guys to be seeing plenty of targets in the next few weeks - and the tight ends, too.

Week 2: Norman (0-1) at Chesapeake (1-0)

Again nothing too special here – we’d like to see Quinn Vinatieri get rolling today at home, as we are without WR Burt Pearson, our top receiving target. But no dramatic changes to the gameplans.

So, we allow a long opening drive, but after that we pretty much clamp down on defense. They posted 80 yards on the first possession, but only another 160 the rest of the day. Again, solid effort from both sides of the ball.

WR Jamie Leverette continues to show himself as an overachiever – my scout rates him as a measly 30/30, but when he gets targets, he seems to be pretty reliable, especially in the end zone. This week – 3 targets, 3 catches, 3 touchdowns.

So, another very good game, and we are geared up for a serious showdown next week with Washington, another division winner from last year and a team loaded with solid talent.

I'd say one of these teams made better use of their 24 pass attempts.

As well as their 30+ rushing attempts.

My immediate guess is that the Chilli Dogs have a heck of an offense, both on the line and at the skill positions.

The CHE roster is pretty strong at most every position. We have a monster at QB, but probably nobody else who would be in the top handful at his position -- just a lot of solid players overall. Here's my scout's view of the lineup:

So, I'm not sure whether this is an overwhelming roster at any particular position -- we're just pretty good just about everywhere, around a monster QB who's something like 4th on the "League's Fastest Man" list on top of being one of the best passers around.

Our in-game roster rating, incidentally, is 85 -- second best in the league to Fall River, who has been good for a while, but has yet to really "put it all together" into a title run.

Week 3: Washington (1-1) at Chesapeake (2-0)

I openly mocked the in-game betting line here – a 4 point spread here suggests that CHE is really only very slightly better than Washington, and I don’t see that myself. Regardless, I do know that this is a tough matchup – they have a prolific RB and a potent offense, plus a very solid pass rush. We ought to have our hands full, even if I’m publicly proclaiming that we can cover the 4 points without breaking a sweat.

With that, no major changes to the game plan – we will be prepared for their stud RB Randy Locher, but I think we can slow him down more with personnel than with scheme. I do not want to get into a guessing game when I feel we have the superior personnel and are playing at home – we will do what we do, and we’ll see if they can do what they do better.

Game MVP: Terrell Crittenden, Washington Piledrivers

OnlineBox Score

So, we manage to squeak this one out, despite not really controlling the game like I had hopes we might be able to. We posted 170 yards rushing, but close inspection will reveal that this wasn’t a product of our new investment at RB – it was crazylegs Brent Sedor posting 94 yards, and seemingly coming up with a clutch scramble for a first down time after time. We’ll take the win, of course, but this was no cakewalk. Without Burt Pearson at WR, I suspect we simply are not all that dynamic a downfield offense, and perhaps Washington piled up to stop us in the smaller stuff.

Regardless of my misgivings, we are 3-0 and looking pretty good overall.

Week 5: Myrtle Beach (1-3) at Chesapeake (3-0)

We come off our bye week looking for a solid win at home against a team we pretty much overmatch. I wish the bye had been later in the season, when we probably will have more injuries to recover from – but we’ll be fine, I reckon. Regardless, expect more balance on offense, and hopefully a solid defensive effort.

Game MVP: Brent Sedor, Chesapeake Chili Dogs

Snappy Online Box Score

So, we get everything we wanted here, and more. The defense was lights-out, and the offense was very solid once again. This was a very impressive win for the C-Dogs, as we move to 4-0 on the season, and are already +100 in the point totals, tops in the league in both points scored and allowed per game. Strong start, needless to say.

It’s also nice to see that we can be effective in the passing game, even with the serious downfield stuff, without WR Burt Pearson. Burt is one the top 10 receivers in this league’s history, I reckon, but even when he is dinged up we are still deadly… Kent Fields this week was in the starting slot for Pearson and hauled in the three TDs, but George Ellis chipped in with 111 yards of his own, while each of our top two tight ends had a long reception over the middle. The best complement we can make is that our team makes it hard to tell whether it’s just Brent Sedor making everyone else look good.

And the defense this week… tremendous. Turnovers, QB pressure, solid against the run… nothing more we could ask of them. Shutout all the way, and had the game in control the whole way. Not much more to say.

Great effort, and we’re pretty healthy leading into next week, where we travel to face the surprisingly hot 5-0 Portland Pisces. So much for that team being in “rebuilding” mode. They seem to be back in winning form pretty damned quickly.
