#5 Florida State (8-1) (-8) at North Carolina State (5-4), TV5
Weather: 60 degrees and fair We win the toss and elect to receive. Kickoff is through the end zone for a touchback. 1st and 10 at our own 20. Macri runs off the right guard for a 1 yard loss. 2nd and 11. A passing down, and FSU is called for Illegal Contact with Receiver - first down! 1st and 10 at the 29. False Start, NC State (here we go again). 1st and 15. Amaya fades back and is sacked by Corrigan for a 7 yard loss (ugh). Sack allowed by Earnest Sweeney. 2nd and 22. Amaya takes a three step drop and completes the pass to TE Jack Mackie for a short 6 yard gain. 3rd and 16. FSU offsides - 3rd and 11. Amaya fades and connects with Jack Mackie again, but he's stopped a yard short of the first down marker. 4th and 1 at the 38 - on comes the punting unit.

From the "son of a gun" dept - we go for it on 4th down. Orlando Macri gains the requisite yard behind the block of Nathan Matthews for the first down! go figure...
1st and 10 at our 39. On first down Macri runs up the middle and is forced to the outside where he finally finds a hole and gains 10. 1st and 10. False start, NC State. Argh! 1st and 15. FSU offsides. 1st and 10 - ha. Gino Linquist gets his first carry of the game and gains 2 off the left guard. 2nd and 8. Orlando Macri runs to the same area, finds a small seam and falls forward for a gain of 6. 3rd and 2. Again Macri takes it to the left-hand side of the line and follows Nathan Matthews' block. A big hole is formed and Macri busts it for 9 yards! 1st down at the FSU 34! On first down, Macri is the tailback and he's stopped after a short gain of 1. 2nd and 9. Amaya fades back on a passing down and manages to screw up what was becoming a nice, time-consuming drive. His pass is intercepted at the FSU 27. End of drive, but we manage to chew up 6:02 of the first quarter.

Time to face that FSU rushing attack...
1st and 10 at their own 27, Schwartz gets the hand off and is dropped for a 2 yard loss by C.J. Schmaltz. Wahoo! 2nd and 12. Mercury Turnbow goes deep on 2nd down, but is flattened by DT David Finley for an 11 yard loss. That's right, FSU - we mean business! 3rd and 23. Turnbow goes for the long pass on 3rd down, this time C.J. Schmaltz breaks through the line and tackles Turnbow for a 10 yard loss. 4th and 33 at their own 4, FSU decides to punt!

A KRB by Hugh Frederick on first down springs Macri for a 10 yard gain down to the 12 yard line. Note to OC: PLEASE CONTINUE TO RUN THE BALL! Macri rides Cedric Wayne's block for 5 yards down to the 7. 2nd and 5. Macri again, this time around the right side for 2, bringing up a pivotal 3rd and 3. To trip them up, Amaya calls for a pass and throws away from double coverage towards Macri for the 5 yard TD pass! YES!
NC State 7, Florida State 0, 5:04 left in the first

FSU starts their next drive at the 25.
1st and 10. Turnbow attempts a pass again and is forced to scramble for 2 yards. 2nd and 8. Abandoning the running game, Mercury Turnbow passes to Ramirez for a 17 yard gain - he's finally brought down by Herman Sanderson. 1st and 10 at the 44. Underthrown pass by Turnbow brings up 2nd and 10. Schwartz runs up the middle and gains 4 - 3rd and 6. Turnbow in an obvious passing down fades back and throws but it's picked off by Ralph Spaulding at the NC State 41! 1st and 10 Wolfpack at their own 43!

I hope that I set the percentages up right, but the game plan was to stuff it down their throats. They're weak up the middle, but nie invincible everywhere else.

Macri gets the call on first down, but is dropped for a 1 yard loss. 2nd and 11. Keying on Macri, so Gino Linquist gets the carry and springs for 5. 3rd and 6. Cedric Wayne gets the KRB, and Orlando Macri rides it for an 8 yard gain and the first down. 1st and 10 at the FSU 45! Amaya calls a pass play on first down and connects with Trent Brodie over the middle for 14! 1st and 10 at the 31. Amaya throws to Donald Clark for the first time all day, but it's underthrown, ending the first quarter.
North Carolina State 7, Florida State 0, end of 1st quarter Total Yards: N.C. State 85, Florida State 0

On a 2nd and 10 play, Macri gets stopped after a yard (he's 51 yards on 12 carries thus far). 3rd and 9 at the 30. Amaya attempts a pass to Trent Brodie, but it's knocked away by the Seminole defender. 4th and 9 at the 30 - does Allen have the leg for a 47 yarder?
Illegal motion, NC State. Argh! 4th and 14 at the 35. False start, NC State. So much for the FG. In one of the most bizarre plays in the history of college football, NC State chooses to go for it on 4th and 19. N.C. State catches FSU in a man-to-man with a linebacker blitzing. This spring Jack Mackie on a fly pattern and he collects the Amaya pass for a 40 yard TD! WTF?! 8 plays, 67 yards, 3:41 off the clock N.C. State 14, Florida State 0, 13:57 left in the half

A shocked FSU team lets the kickoff roll through the end zone for the touchback.
1st and 10 at the 20, and FSU decides to get back to what they do best - run the ball. Graham gains 6 up the middle. 2nd and 4. Defensive holding on N.C. State - automatic first down. 1st and 10 at the 36. Turnbow completes a pass for 22 yards to O'Neill. 1st and 10 at the NC State 42. Schwartz gains 3 on first down. 2nd and 7. Schwartz gets the carry again and gain another 3 around the other side. 3rd and 4 at the 36. Big play here...Turnbow completes a 13 yard pass to Lewis for the first down at the 23 yard line. Hmmm...I guess holding them to nothing was too good to be true. Counterplay to Schwartz surprises us and he runs 23 yards untouched for the TD. Hmmm... 6 plays, 70 yards, 3:20 off the clock NC State 14, Florida State 7, 10:37 left in the half

Trent Brodie returns the kickoff to our 27 yard line where we will begin our next drive. Hopefully seeing how easily FSU scored on their last drive doesn't give us the heebie-jeebies
Linquist carries on first down and is dropped for a 1 yard loss. 2nd and 11. Illegal Use of the Hands, NC State. 2nd and 21. Amaya overthrows Macri on the screen, but the FSU defense was ready to spring on him anyway. We were lucky that wasn't intercepted. 3rd and 21. A pass to Kenneth Wertz, but it's easily defended and the defense was in perfect position. 4th and 21 and heebie jeebies are confirmed 30 yard punt, 7 yard return, FSU ball at our 39. Uh oh.

A reverse by Singleton is *BAM* dropped by our aggressive secondary for a 4 yard loss - Bubba Flynn and Henry Westbrook combine on the tackle. 2nd and 14. Schwartz goes off the left tackle and is dropped for no gain. 3rd and 14. Turnbow takes a 4-step drop and he has Mario Beethoven in his face - incomplete pass. 4th and 14.
Taking nothing for granted here as we went for it...fortunately FSU doesn't. 33 yard punt, out of bounds at our 10. 8:26 left in the half.

A big unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on 2nd down gets us some breathing room to the 27. Amaya then follows with his first completion to Donald Clark for an 11 yard gain. After another false start, we're given a gift pass interference call for the first down. Amaya passes again to today's favorite target, Jack Mackie, and we gain 15 yards down to the FSU 42. You can see Amaya's confidence growing after each pass, so he tries to rekindle his ongoing romance with Donald Clark and sparks fly for a 22 yard completion. 1st and 10 at the FSU 20. Two runs by Macri and Linquist net a yard, so on a big 3rd and 9 play Amaya passes to almost-forgotten Earl Forbes for 17 yards! 1st and goal at the 2. Ugh...FSU keys on Macri and he loses 2 and the loses 3 on consecutive carries. 3rd and goal at the 7. Surprisingly, we try Macri again and he gains 5. 4th and goal at the 2. 19 yard FG by Allen is good.
11 plays, 68 yards, 5:55 chewed off the clock NC State 17, Florida State 7, 2:31 left in the half

Touchback on the kickoff and FSU begins at their 20.
An 11 yard gain on first down is followed by 2 incomplete passes and a pass blocked by C.J. Schmaltz, bringing up 4th and 10 at their own 31. 38 yard punt downed at the NC State 31. 1:13 left. We decide not to run it out and let Vincent Allen give it a go from 59 yards out. Not surprisingly, the ball is short of the crossbar ending the half. N.C. State 17, Florida State 7, halftime First Downs: FSU 6, NC State 17 Rushing: FSU 14, NC State 58 Passing: FSU 63, NC State 157 215-77 in total yards. How the heck did we lose to Georgia Tech?

FSU ball to begin the 2nd half.
Kickoff is down to the 5 and returned 31 yards where the returner FUMBLES the ball. CB Jorge Montgomery picks the ball up and returns it 10 yards to the FSU 26! Wahoo!

Time to hammer the first nail into the coffin...
Linquist gains 2 on first down. 2nd and 8. Play-action pass by Amaya to a streaking Brodie nets 24 yards and the touchdown! 2 plays, 26 yards, 46 secs off the clock. NC State 24, Florida State 7, 14:07 left in the 3rd

Of course...I lose the next update due to an Internet issue, so here's an update:
NC State 38, Florida State 7, 3:39 left in the 3rd. TDs by Macri (6 yards) and a TD pass to Clark (15 yards) since we last left you.

OMG.
FSU starts their next drive at their own 27. On first down, Mercury Turnbow tries to go deep, but the pass is picked off by Ralph Spaulding and return 75 yards for the TD. This is absolutely nuts. NC State 45, Florida State 7, 3:07 left in the 3rd

3 plays later, FSU scores their 2nd TD of the day on the strength of a Schwartz 14 yard TD run. Note: We are already sending in the prevent package.

Justin Amaya goes in a passing frenzy and leads us 65 yards in 11 plays, 6:32 taken off the clock. This drive ends in a 20 yard Vincent Allent FG.
I'm noticing that we're bringing in a lot of 2nd and 3rd team players now. NC State 48, Florida State 14, 6:53 left

Going against our nickel and prevent packages FSU drive but it stalls with a 4th and 3 at our 44. Surprisingly, they choose to punt and it's BLOCKED by DE Timothy Carter. FSU recovers, but it's in their territory, so they turn the ball over on downs. 3:24 left.
Our drive goes nowhere and we punt the ball into the end zone for a touchback. 1:37 left.

Only 3 emails...
The first tells us the Amaya is over his post-combat stress syndrome. The second tells us Johnnie Woodard is on academic notice (non-scholarship walkon). Third informs us that OLB Riddick Perry has accepted a scholarship offer from us. I went after Perry this week - he's unranked, but our scout rated him a 55 and my visit showed that he was better than scouted. He'll add depth but hopefully won't start.

Thanks, Quik. Just want to remind everyone that these sites are $6 for a lifetime page and the site is pre-formatted, all you have to do is add the information for your team.
Just finished recruiting...knowing that we set G, CB and DT on high priority, I've been checking the scouting services for the best guards and cornerbacks available. I made some contacts, some invites and some scholarship offers. Here's what I received at the end of the week... WR J.T. Lincoln has accepted a scholarship to Miami (FL). Argh - he had us listed first going into the week. WR Lee Prescott has accepted a scholarship to Arizona. C Richie Harmon has accepted our scholarship offer. T Terrell Richardson has accepted a scholarship to Georgia. Richie Harmon is #938 nationally with a 3.53 and 1429 SAT. That gives us 7 Top 1000 recruits on the year, and 0 of our remaining contacts are in the Top 1000. Ugh...we're going from bad to worse .

At some point, I think it makes sense to abandon the semi-usable recruits, and instead just go after academic superstars. I don't really care too much whether our 7th-best DL is a 15/20 or a 3/9, but if he drags a 3.90 GPA, he helps the team that way.
