If MLB gets their collective asses kicked by this Astro team after this past off season...

I'm wondering what they're doing to cheat. They have to be doing something.

...it would be freaking hilarious!

Especially if they rolled through the Yankees and the Dodgers, after all their whining (as if these aren't teams that have bent the rules excessively, as well, while trying to play the "oh, we're totally clean next to these guys" card)

That would give the Astros the asterisk title in 2017 and the asterisk (for a different reason) title in 2020. There's some lovely symmetry to it.

Oh, Zack, you lovable rascal. Showed the sign to the catcher (and batter), but hung the slider to give the A's a 3-0 lead. Whoops.

I can handle a Rays championship.

They simply must beat the Astros.

Bummer. Sucks that you can only muster 1 run out of that lineup. But i guess the outcome is expected when you only have 1 starting pitcher.

I am so confused with did he or did he not try to get out of the way of a pitched ball decisions.

End of an era. Seems strange to not think about him as head of the A's and also likely not a good thing for the A's to maintain any semblance of competitiveness.

Then again, I have no idea how much he was involved in day-to-day ops of the team these days.

I have not followed the Astros in depth after the intial reaction to the cheating scandal so I may be way off with this. Are the Altuve struggles similar to Lebron's first year in Miami? I don't mean how they played on the field per se. I mean how they went through that season trying to embrace being the villian despite wanting everyone to love him. It may be an act but I believe Carlos Correa is like fuck you guys I am going to show you. Same with Alex Bregman. Altuve from the outside seems like someone who is troubled by the accusations.

Also I read that you can't watch your previous at bats in the dugout anymore during the game. That seems like a really good rule.

Meanwhile, the Dodgers have left an army of runners on base so either team is going to have something to point to when they lose

Roberts finally did something right. Urias had to at least start the 9th, and to my stunned dismay, HE DID.

Of course, it was 29-3 prior to Atlanta's game. But still.

So not everyone cares equally about all of these to be sure. But:

- Braves choked away 3-1 series lead
- GT destroyed by Clemson
- UGA reminded that they have to play the second half against Alabama
- ATL United lost
- Falcons won and started their fuck up of their draft pick.

Even Georgia State lost in football.

Whew. What a series. Hopefully we can get the ring for Kershaw and don't need to keep foolishly pushing him out there in a desperate attempt to win it all. Just play our game and hopefully we can take it. 1988 was a long time ago. We should have won in 17, but the Astros. Should be a fun matchup with two teams built similarly in style

And #2 in payroll vs. #28 in payroll should provide a lot of narrative fun.

It shouldn't, since the Dodgers President of Baseball Operations led the Rays to the postseason with a minimal payroll as well. The story should more be how the Dodgers President left a culture of winning on limited resources, but there shouldn't be a comparison. The Dodgers aren't buying championships. You could put in a salary cap of 100 million and the Dodgers will still be a successful organization and the Rays still wouldn't hit the cap ceiling

If this were a full season the Dodgers would have 85.5 million in payroll, more than the entire Rays payroll, for,

Mookie
Turner
Pollock
Treinen
Kelly

The Dodgers are a very good organization, but it makes a huge difference that they have so much money to spend.

As much as I love Kershaw and really want him to get a ring,..and as predisposed as I am to cheering for Mookie (though he doesn't really need another ring)...I'd be 100% okay with the Rays winning this one.

Perhaps related, I watched Moneyball again this weekend (since it just dropped on Hulu or Netflix or whatever). Man, what a fantastic movie that is. One of those rare cases where the movie is -- in some ways -- just as good or better than the original.

Cool graph of how the teams were built. Dodgers have the second most FA's signed, but also have the second most drafted players. Not bad considering they never picked very high, other than a decade and a half ago when they grabbed Kershaw

yeah, it's a great movie.

I dunno about what they're saying about his next movie (Chicago 7) but Aaron Sorkin had a helluva run there as a screenwriter. The Social Network, Moneyball, Steve Jobs were all excellent films. His directoral debut Molly's Game is great, but if you gave his script to a better director I'm pretty sure it would be top tier.

I'll totally admit to being non traditional, but a neutral site WS/LCS should be the norm. Rotate it among the warm weather stadiums. Those places are also attractive vacation destinations. Plus if you schedule it in Miami often, there's no chance that a team will get homefield advantage.

I believe 2020 is the 1st year they made the playoffs and haven't won the World Series.

Uh... There seems to be a good amount of people at the World Series with areas that don't seem to have much social distancing in a state that isn't known for a good plan for Covid... Yikes

Edit: Ah, looks to be far less people/spread out in the OF areas.

The Kershaw post season thing is funny to me. He has been pretty much the same picture minus two things that are mostly uncontrollable. His HR/FB percentage is absurdly high in the postseason 15.6% vs 9.2% in the regular season. His left on base percentage is typically around 80 percent in the regular season while his postseason has fallen to 68%.

Kershaw has basically had his worst luck in the postseason. Last night's performance might start the progression back to the mean for him.
