Jozy looks amazing. Is there a reason they don't start him every game? He's been responsible for two chances that should have been goals.

The US has blown a few good chances, the 2-0 scoreline is a bit harsh imo. I wouldn't be surprised if they got a draw in the second half.

The announcer just said that if Jozy were to get another yellow, he would have to miss the 1st World Cup game. Is this true? And if so, why the fuck would you have him on the field right now in a meaningless game?

That is fucking awesome. Costa Rica delays like crazy, fakes injuries to stall, has 2 coaches ejected, then blows it in the last minute of stoppage time.
Still, a real bad 48 hours for the team. They lose Davies for the World Cup and it looks like Onyewu might have blown out his knee. |

Does winning the group help the U.S. in seeding at all for the World Cup draw?

That last minute, ten man equalizer means USA tops the group, suck it Mexico.
Sucks for Costa Rica. Their strength and conditioning coach (running the team after the manager and assistant were sent off and escorted off the field by DC police) looked like he was about to cry. Honestly though they had like three chances the entire match and scored two, USA had a lot more shots on goal and posession. Honduras are better than they are, I'm glad they'll be guaranteed a spot in the WC instead (although I will be rooting for Costa Rica against Uruguay out of CONCACAF solidarity). |

On Sportcenter they said Onyewu has a torn tendon in his knee and he will be out 3-4 months. At least he'll be back in time for the World Cup but damn.

Really happy we could
1) Win the group 2) Send Honduras through to the world cup We tailgated with a bunch of Honduran fans before a Gold Cup doubleheader in Philly this summer (USA/Panama and Honduras/Canada) and they were tremendous. That and the fact that Wilson Palacios plays for Tottenham have left me with a real affinity for them. |

Ghana just beat Brazil in sudden death penalty kicks to win the U-20 World Cup. First time an African team has won and to do it on African soil no less (in Egypt) is pretty impressive.
They played a man down from the 37-minute mark, pushed it past extra time to penalty kicks. Brazil had chances, but choked on two kicks that would've won it and Ghana scored on their last shot to tie on the 5th kick to go to sudden death. Brazil missed one and then Ghana pulled it out on their first try of the sudden death kick phase. I only watched the last few minutes of it, but...Ghana did a heck of a job.

Wait a second, somebody mentioned Luis Suarez as a good example of a non-diver? His reputation in the Netherlands is that of being the biggest diver (and best player) in the league.

I'm glad Ghana won the U-20 World Cup, I thought their red card in the first half was a bad decision and Brazil played boringly despite being a man up for nearly 90 minutes.

Agreed, Brazil absolutely had more talent and should have romped Ghana, especially after the red card. But they allowed Ghana to play their risk-averse game, and got the L they deserved for allowing Ghana to play that way...
Nevertheless, I've been waiting for an African nation to become a powerhouse in futbol. If France/England/Germany would stop stealing all the young talent, it may happen... Last edited by watravaler : 10-16-2009 at 06:21 PM. |

Who has England stolen that was actually born and raised in an African nation? I can't think of one off the top of my head... if anything it's British born players qualifying to play for African nations that come to mind.
NM - I think you were talking about African players leaving to play in academies in Europe. Then I definitely agree with what Ronnie says below, there is no way an African team has success unless their players are playing in the top international leagues. Wouldn't African nations benefit more from their players training in excellent environments? Does that outweigh them all playing together?

Sweet goal for Darren Bent, bouncing it off a balloon on the field.
Nice of Villa to get the win today. edit: And Sunderland too. United win 2-1 to go top. Last edited by Big Fo : 10-17-2009 at 12:09 PM. |

pure gold reminds me of this :
if Europe wouldn´t "steal" all those talents they´d be still loosing 0:8 in the WC. Seriously, have you ever seen a soccer game in Africa ? Or googled it a bit ? |

I read watravaler's comment as being against European nations that naturalize Africans and have them play for their national teams, not European clubs bringing African players over.

Dejan Stankovic scores on a volley from near the midfield line right before the end of the half. Unbelievable effort.

I read about this fixed match the second division of one of the Brazilian state leagues the other day, now here's a video. Viana scored 9 goals in the last 9 minutes in an 11-0 victory, winning them promotion to the first division. This is an absolute disgrace, the "defending" is comical and these guys are very bad actors.

What makes it even worse is the backstory - the is was one of two teams tied for the top spot, even GD & goals scored. Towards the end of the final games, both being played at the same time, both teams were winning 2-0. So the one team magically scores 9 goals in 9 minutes to ensure the top spot...
But the other team fighting for the title were down to 10 men and somehow themselves were added 3 penalities in the same timeframe! So disqualifying the one sides promotion would only let in the other team who also cheated, just not as well! Soccer Team Scores 9 Goals In 9 Minutes, Wins Battle Of Cheaters

To hell with FIFA, I hope all four lower ranked teams win.
It turns out that Darren Bent's goal actually bounced off a beach ball, not a balloon. And the beach ball was part of an official Liverpool beach set (bag, towel, beach ball) available on Liverpool's website and club store. Now rival fans are buying them up (recently halved in price down to £10), I bet a bunch of Man Utd fans bring them to Anfield on Sunday. I wonder if the Liverpool fan who threw the ball onto the field got his ass kicked after the game. The ref should have stopped play when Bent's shot hit the ball and done a drop ball. Now he's been demoted to the Championship for next weekend's games. |

It'll be an interesting day, six teams going for two places.
It'd be cool if Saturday's broadcast switched from NYRB-TFC, KC-DC, RSL-COL, and SSFC-FCD kind of like the NFL Red Zone Channel but the games all have different start times. At least FSC will have RSL-COL and New England will likely still be in it on Sunday against Columbus on ESPN2. Last edited by Big Fo : 10-19-2009 at 02:10 PM. |

Most media coverage certainly, but I think Bosnia-Portugal is a better matchup. I really like Bosnia's attacking group of Misimovic, Dzeko, Ibisevic, Salihovic and Pjanic.

Interesting, I actually think the Greece - Ukraine matchup is the biggest one of the World Cup playoffs, they were the 2nd and 3rd best second place teams. I do wonder why FIFA had to make up a lame excuse to force Portugal into a seeded spot so they could avoid France and Russia. An all in one bowl would have been fairest, or at least make the seeding based on the ranking order that pushed Norway out of the World Cup.

Lyon picks up a nice late win 2-1 over a Liverpool team missing Torres and Gerrard after an early injury. Lyon really turned it up and looked dominant when trying for the equalizer, but then sat back the last 15. Still got the win though on an injury time counter. I'd forgotten just how much talent Lyon had despite losing Benzema and Juninho - of course using the Benzema money to acquire Lisandro Lopez and Aly Cissokho from Porto was a good start, and Gomis a nice topper.
Rubin Kazan pulls off the shocker of the early CL with the 2-1 win at Barca, thanks in part to a miracle strike (Ibra's response wasn't bad either) so early the commentators didn't even catch it Also saw the 2nd half of Hull-Fulham yesterday, and the less said the better. Hull came out playing for a 0-0 tie at Fulham, and continued playing extremely negative football even down 1-0 until Fulham added a 2nd. At that point, Hull brought on Jozy for the last 20 and he single-handedly created Hull's best chance, but put it over. |
